2024-25 Japanese Women's Figure Skating

Seriously I don't understand why Ririo Kono competed when she was clearly not in shape, I think Ikura deserved a second chance to redem herself or maybe a chance for Mayuko Oka who is doing great in Japan
Should have been Oka. But, I think Japan likes to give their top Novice skaters a chance to experience an international competition. Ririo was the top Novice girl from last season transitioning to Juniors.

Didn't JSF also held JGP selection camp / competition in the summer? It could well be that Riria did better in there than Mayuko, hence why she got that spot.

I'm fine with that part of the process, I just wish JSF had clearer criteria about maintaining 2nd JGP spot too - the way they've been pulling the boys and ice dancers out is just stupid, and so heartbreaking for the boys who clearly thought they would still have a second JGP.

Of the two japanese junior ladies competing in the sixth jgp this week, I think is better for Mei Okada to place first if she wants to go to gpf, with her bronze medal a gold medal here means she will qualify directly, but if she place second she will fight for a place at the final with low chances to be honest, in Rena case if she place first she might go to the final but she would get less points than two silver medals so it means it's not a direct qualification, if she places second or lower her chances are gone, this is the same case with Jia Shin as she placed 4th like Rena. Rena and Jia don't look good at all this season, so Mei can take an advantage of that, I mean yes she did make some mistakes in her first competition but was her first international competition and she has been doing great at Japan so she just needs to focus. Jia might be doing better adjusting to her new coach the past weeks, Rena it's a big If since she looks to be undergoing a growth spurt.

Kaori also competed today at a different domestic competition.

Kaori competed here free skate today. Not as good as her SP… 139 and some change. Total score: 215.80. Which, is still high and places her as the favourite heading into the GP season.

Her jump layout in the free skate was:

2A perfect
3Lz perfect
1A eu 2S (not sure what happened here)
- Is she bored and wanting to try something different? I love her 2A 3T 2T jump combo
3F 3T (in SP, this jump was q)
- Not sure why she moved this jump to first half, when she went for this jump in the second half, last few seasons)

2Lz (I guess she is now going for two 3Lz)
3F 2T (combo… she could have gone for 3T since she doubled her lutz)
3Lo (Perfect)

I’m not sure why she is changing her winning jump layout. Two 3Lz scare me and this Euler combo is just not working out. But, I would love to see her nail it, once this season.

Her entire thing this season is "CHANGE" which she describes as changing her jump layout. If it works then great, she has another option for the Olympic season, if it doesn't work then great, she knows to come back to her usual layout for the Olympic season.

I guess 😟

She seems to have no competition, until a consistent skater with a 3A surpasses her.

I’m just in shock that a free skate consisting of non backloaded triple triple and only one triple double in the second half, with three popped jumps, can almost score 140.

Her competition is herself. And I think while she wants to win that 4th world title, she also wants to take this time to experiment and learn from her challenges and failures, before focusing on her last Olympics.

I mean, that score does not surprise me given she's the reigning 3-time World Champion, 4-time National champion and the only active individual Olympic medalist right now, and she's basically skating at her home rink (literally, that competition is in Hyogo). It's not a competition which results you want to take that seriously and they probably want to encourage her before her first GP.

No competition? This is Olympic qualifying year with World's in the USA. This is the ISU we're talking about, not a legitimate sports governing body. Have you noticed the ridiculous scores the American girls have been getting so far? Remember last Worlds before Olympics? Kaori finished BEHIND Karen Chen. Lol When the US needs 3 spots weird things can happen.

You are right?
I remember being shocked with Kaori scores that year!!
That is why I think Kaori shouldn’t fool around with her jump layout.
If she pops and an American skater nails it, she might be in for a shock

If there's a time for her to fool around it would be now (GP Series up to Nationals). It gives Kaori enough time to return to her original layout for Worlds to secure the Olympic spots. And I'm not worried about her being shocked if an American skater redlines and peaked for Worlds. She literally just came in third at Lombardia Trophy below 2 American skaters. She knows.

No matter what layout she has, her content is not any more difficult than the average medal contender. This is ISU figure skating. Skating clean and being judged clean are two different things. Sakamoto is particularly dependent on friendly judging since her content isn't anything special. As I said, when she lost to Karen Chen, she skated no worse than usual, but was scored far less.

Well, 2021 Kaori and 2025 Kaori are different, and I don't think I need to explain how. But I do agree that the US skaters are coming out strong, the US Fed loves themselves a pre-Olympic Worlds, and if there's a year Kaori may lose her World title it's probably better to be this one. But then again, when clean... who jumps and skates like Kaori these days?

The main difference with Kaori is no Russian competition. Otherwise she isn't much different except for reputation scoring for past success now. The truth is that Sakamoto could get an edge call anytime she does a lutz. And every female skater is going to be close enough to at least a q on all their 3/3 combos that an unfriendly judge can call it. Her whole strategy depends on bonus points from judges for quality, not challenging content. Knowing the quality and integrity of skating judges, this leaves her very vulnerable.

Vulnerable enough to threepeat as a World Champion, I agree.

I think the only reason for worrying about Kaori is because Olympic spots are on the line at Worlds. Otherwise, Kaori has lost GP series before. She even came 5th at a GPF after becoming a World Champion. I think she knows the risk of trying new things with her layout and is fine with it. The only significant threat to her, right now, is a bad injury. Even if she lost GPF and Worlds this year to skaters like Chaeyeon or Amber, does it change anything about her Olympic title chances? Not really.
