Wakaba Higuchi isn't on the top 3 in Japan right now
You said best, which doesn't necessarily correlate to ranking, especially after an extended layoff. However, I realize she has to reestablish herself,so it was a tongue in cheek comment, sort of.

I kinda want to mention Wakaba's last National placement, but let's just focus on how good Wakaba's comeback is looking right now. If she keeps it up, I see both GPF and 4CC in the cards which is more useful to her world standing than Asian Winter Games (no points awarded).
I would say current form is more important than last years performance after a layoff and surgery in evaluating talent. Especially with a skater who finished 4th in last Olympics, including behind 2 Russians who would be banned right now. But as I said, it was mostly a tounge in cheek comment. A healthy Higuchi ready to compete should be right behind Sakamoto on that list. More important than ranking, right now she needs to get her 3/3 consistent, get used to serious competition again, and hopefully get her 3A consistent by next season.

We know the potential Wakaba has but right now she is not on that level, the entries were based on last season results

Thats why I said it was a little toungue in cheek, because she wasn't competitive last season. But we are talking about now, and right now she looks pretty good compared to most of the girls on that list. Don't you agree?

She started very well her season but still needs to skate clean and we haven't seen the others skate at grand prix, she needs to fight to be again on top, something we know she can do, she is one of the best japanese ladies skaters in general and one of my favorites but Japan made it's assigments based on the last season results where she wasn't on good form, it's still very early to say she is on the top

Yes its too late to change assignments based on last year. But all she needs to do is skate clean to be top 3 of those girls. When she is in form no fighting is necessary. Although a few of those girls can threaten with quads and or 3As, their general skating is inferior to Wakaba. So its up to her. If she doesn't continue to improve this season she sounds like this will be her last season anyway.

Kaori has obviously done alot of work on loosening up her upper back movement. While not really a strength, its no longer seems to be a negative for her, especially with wise choices of choreography.

So from all the grand prix events this one was the one I was expecting a japanese sweep, and it happened indeed! But for just a little, Kaori and Hana didn't look great at all compared to others competitions and Rino struggle with her short but I'm still very happy that in the end we saw the three on the podium 🙂 I hope they can rest a little an improve, next week it's a though one

If you think about it, the non Japanese competition was incredibly weak here. All the Japanese girls under performed, yet still swept. You could even argue Kaori got some reputation scoring and should have been in the 190s too.

Yes, that's the reason I was expecting the swept, there was not a real competition here maybe Elyce but wasn't great at skate america nor here with just a week apart, Kimmy is consistent but doesn't receive high scores, Alysa it's just coming back, she is not on top level, Yelim comes from an injury, Kurakova same case with Kimmy but less consistent, etc, and yes I feel the japanese leaved many points on the table but it was still enough, I just hope they do much better in their next grand prix because they need it if they want to go to gpf. The other grand prix where we can see another sweep maybe it's nhk trophy.

When I saw Kaoruko Wada at JGPs this season, she remind me of Rino Matsuike's best days.
And we saw it at Skate Canada.
I have feeling that Machiko Yamada finally can train her ideal skaters.

I'm waiting for Kaoruko to turn senior before passing judgement. Yamada's weakness has always been maintaining jumps and the conditioning for competitions. Program and music selection can be hit and miss (they're trending to more warhorses now that Mihoko has left, for good and bad) but her skaters' skating skills and attention to presentation when physically fit can make up for it.

Getting Soshi Tanaka to join is such a large coup because he has history of teaching sound jump technique to his skaters since young. Now it's the conditioning, both physical and mental. When I saw Rino's SP I was like... not another missed opportunity at an international competition... she rallied back but she was close to losing another season competing internationally.

Next season Ami Nakai, Yo Takagi and Ikura Kushida will turn senior so any bad result internationally can make the skater loose it's grand prix assigment and all the season, we already have Mana Kawabe, Mako Yamashita, Yuna Shiraiwa, Maria Egawa and Saki Miyake who can't compete internationally unless they place high at japan nationals

I know.
Ami Nakai will for sure knock out one of the Japanese Women….
At the moment it is Yuna Aoki 😫
(I have a feeling it could be Mai Mihara, based on what I saw in domestic competitions or both)
Yo Takagi could be the second athlete to benefit.
Ikura will have to probably skate as a Junior for one more year, unless she makes it to Junior Worlds this season, and increases her SB score.

I'm not saying it doesn't need to be fixed, but as long as Wakaba continues skating clean like this it helps buffer up her scores when the calls happen. She breaks 200 and now holds the highest senior Japanese Women total score SB IIRC.

And now to the GPF 😎 Let's get those reputation points up!

Her jumps are judged overly harshly. Her jumps today were under a quarter and should have been called clean. The q is a bogus rule implemented to allow clean skates to be knocked down to manipulate scores. Only 1 point higher PCS than Amber's mess? Lol
