2024 Skate Canada Women's Free Skate

It's no different than Siao Him Fa. You get See-Oh and See-Ow (as in cow). But it has nothing to do with racism. Heck, Kagiyama gets his last name pronounced so many ways I've lost count along with Koshiro's first name. It could be worse . . . this is the face Yuzu made when the announcer said: "Representing China, Yuzuru Hanyu."

And then also calmly co-opted Shoma for China as well... not being greedy or anything

So I am trying to take a pic of the podium and my neighbor calls to say there are three moose...a mom and two babies, chewing on my mountain ash tree, 10 yards from the front door and I am about to let the dog out...love this podium....the people, not the mistakes...but thats figure skating.

or Adammm with a long M when it is actually silent.

for those who are wondering.

He also butchers Rino's last name. How long has Kaori been on the scene now? Clearly he doesn't respect Japanese people.
Sadly, I agree about his and others lack of respect for names. I have a speech impediment and bad ears, but I try. I ask Japanese people how to say Ruriko and Kaori.....some announcers dont even try....

@Sackie pointed out some very Canadian thing in the scoring...

Maddie received her lowest scores in PCS from Judge 3.... the Canadian judge.

Judge 3 also wasn't very generous in GOE, often giving her the lowest GOE (not always and not alone) on her elements.

So it seems we are back to Canadian judges give tough love to our athletes. :)

I don't know what music was Rino skating to but just give peace, it remember me Final Fantasy or Narnia soundtrack idk, her program was a demostration of what skating skills are, just magnificient, what a quality of skater! What is her coach name? She trains many skaters with such quality on everything but especially on skating skills, transitions and spins. 😍

I looked up the composer (from ISU website) Christopher Tin, he is well-known for his soundtracks - film, tv and game - so this is not surprising, I have said before than good video game music would be great for figure skating, after all it's designed specifically to promote an immersive experience, studies show it can be beneficial for many things like study, creative work and it seems skating or watching skating.

She trains in Nagoya under Machiko Yamada's camp (GP Tokai club / Chukyo) - her full list of coaches are Machiko Yamada, Yuko Hongo, Soshi Tanaka.

That camp is known for flow, glide and seamless weaving with the music indeed - Shoma being the most notable alumni 😍

The coach who is travelling with Rino right now is Yuko Hongo (yes, Rika Hongo's mother). But the main coach of her rink is Machiko Yamada, who was the coach of the following skaters: Midori Ito, Mao Asada, Yukari Nakano, Kanako Murakami, Shoma Uno. Now Soshi Tanaka from Sendai is also on the coaching roster.

In terms of Rino's transitions I think you can thank Lori Nichol for the choreography 🤣 but for the quality of basic skating skills and attention to music and presentation, this Nagoya-based school is probably my favorite. And Rino's sublime glide keeps their presence internationally.

There are some vowels in Japanese language that make total sense for a native French speaker but are not intuitive for English speakers.
I am making this distinction as I can see, as a bilingual person how it could be confusing.
This. I speak several languages which I learned as an adult ( very different than learning a language as a child.. The pronunciation aspect will always be a struggle) and I hear both English and my non-native languages spoken by non-native speakers all the time due to my work and friendship group which is very " eclectic." It's normal and frankly amusing how the pronunciation of each language is butchered in different ways by non-native speakers but English speakers struggle with the very simple vowels in Indonesian and Chinese because our own vowels are so inconsistent. We expect other languages to also be inconsistent. It means English speakers make mistakes with vowels that are "easy."

To be fair, Japanese and Chinese people have some very very odd pronunciation issues in Indonesian, too. Most Indonesians here in Taiwan get called Ani, Ati or Ai all names which I can assure you do not resemble their actual names in the least. And, Indonesians struggle to understand Chinese or Japanese people speaking their language due to their accents. Ending consonants do not come naturally to most speakers of these languages. R sounds are difficult. Indonesians speaking Chinese are also very difficult to understand even for another non-native speaker such as myself. This isn't racism it's related to natural brain development. We lose the ability to hear sounds that aren't in the languages we learn as small children.

No one in Taiwan has ever properly pronounced my surname. That's not racism. They just can't hear it properly or pronounce the consonant clusters. So, I have a Mandarin name or just ask people to say my personal name which is very easy for Taiwanese people, but not Indonesians, who always mispronounce it. Again, not racism, just reality.

And, not to leave the French out of it, in general French people's pronunciation of Mandarin is better in terms of the vowels but , wow, do they have some consonant issues and the flow of the language isn't great.

Basically, unless you learned a sound as a child, or are incredibly gifted it's going to be hard to pronounce a lot of sounds.

Not to put the words back to your mouth, but Rino proved us all wrong hey 😊
And ice is so slippery, it's never over until it's over
She actually should have been even closer to winning. They did not call Sakamoto lutz for wrong edge and Kaori outscored Rino by 2 pts in PCS despite 2 falls and a rather sloppy program.

I really love the variety of camps in Japan, we have Mie Hamada, Machiko Yamada, Mihoko Higuchi, Sonoko Nakano, Kensuke Nakaniwa, Koji Okajima, Yuko Monna, etc, each one develop and focuses more some aspects of the skating, Yamada and her team for example focuses more about the flow, quality and control of the edges, spins, and that captivates me, no wonder she was the coach of the great Mao Asada

Im not saying they should inherently know how to pronounce names. Im saying that sometime in the last 8 years that she has been prominent in skating, that he should have heard her name correctly pronounced. Since it is simple to remember, he obviously didn't care.

Congrats to Kaori, Rino and Hana….what a come back Rino - amazing skating performance today. Alysa Liu upbeat music but needs to work on her jumps, I know it’s been two years break but hopefully with working on her technical skills she can do better.
