2024 Skate Canada Women's Free Skate

Kaori 😫🫣
I sensed this would happen after watching her compete domestically.
Her SP is good. Her jump layout is the same
Her FP… disastrous….. not only did I struggle to follow along with the program, she just moves around the ice and moves her arms and there are no highlights or anything interesting or worth watching over again.
Also, changing her layout, the 2A eu 3S has not been working for her. Domestically, and at this event, she pops either the axel or the salchow.
Also, she removed the 3F 3T and amazing 2A 3T 2T from the second half and replaced it simply with a 3Lz 2T, which I don’t agree with because she doesn’t really have a technically sound lutz and now she is repeating this jump. The 120+ score was generous as I would have given her 3 points lower for TES and 5 points lower for PCS. I would have barely given her first place still…
She is maki my me think that she could lose her National and World title this year. The question is, who is going to seize the moment. Anna Frolova just won Stage 1 with clean triples and good skating skills… which athlete is going to seize the opportunity?

Rino - she is my favourite Japanese skater along with Yuna Aoki and Rion and Mone. I’m so glad the world got to see such an amazing free skate. The skate deserved 140+ score though 🄺

Hana - glad she held on to the bronze medal. She risks with a 3A and people don’t understand that as long as you get 4+ on a 3A, that it can actually help you score more points than a non-3A program. She fell in the 3Lz and lost silver with that mistake. She is an exciting skater.

Kimmy - just like Nina P, just missed a medal…. It is harder for smaller federations to breakthrough… she was so close and I was sad to see her reaction at the kiss n cry.

Maddie - she had the sale of her life. I’m glad she is going for two 3Lz now. She was happy to score over 190. I think she wanted to secure her worlds spot and she might have just done that. 80% chance she goes to Worlds now. She also secured two GP events next season. So, good for her. She also had a case for being on the podium

Alysa - love her programs. But, glad the judges didn’t reward her 2.5 T/S combos. She needs to adjust her jumping layout.

Elyce - this is the skater the judges want to reward. She actually has the most potential.

If you were to tell me Kaiya would place right behind Alysa and Elyce, I would have taken that. She fought and grabbed 8th place and points. Love her with Tracy and her being at this camp.

Sara-Maude - nice fight

The Korean skaters - this is how they skated domestically. Yelim placed 8/8 at Korean domestic event and 12/12 here 😳
(They are lucky they have C.Kim)
Also, Ahsun Yun seems to be their second best skater this season. Hope to see Ahsun take advantage of this opportunity.
I agree with you about Kaori being overscored. But you forgot Wakaba in your list of girls. She looks healthy and ready to compete. If so, she has more ability than any of the girls you mentioned. We will have to see if she continues to improve, if so, she will be a big threat.

Being a professional skating announcer he should have heard it pronounced correctly many times.
I'm note even sure who you are talking about, since there were several commentators on various streams this weekend. If it is Ted Barton, he is NOT a professional skating announcer. He is the executive director of Skate Canada BC/Yukon Division.

He proposed the JGP streaming program to the ISU. He has said his motivation was primarily so that the skaters would have a good-quality video record of their own performances. That's why he doesn't talk during the JGP performances; so the skaters will have a "pure" record of their performance.

If you had looked him up on Wikipedia, you would have known that.

Oh lord, I cannot believe this tepid storm in a dollsize teacup is still going on.

Look, a lot of totally 'professional' announcers, news reporters and anchors, event hosts etc mangle the names of their own countrymen let alone others (and there have been a few, lovingly collected in blooper shows, where someone's mangled his own:laugh2:). I again refer you to the incredibly august and impressive BBC news anchor whose lifelong mantra was, when faced with a name and not a clue, to look into the camera and say the first thing that came into his head (he also told a story about an African politician, it took him six years to get the name right, "and I finally got it so I could say it at a moment's notice... and they shot him.")

The commentators all spent years mangling Yuzuru's name, which is one you would think even easier than Kaori's (one of them brilliantly gushed "I won't forget this guy's name!" in the same minute he had already hopelessly messed it up :drama:) And sports commentators, especially those who are ex-sports stars, are notorious for their funny foul ups in every aspect of language. There are also a lot of names from a lot of countries, and the only reason we don't hear how many of the Russian/other European/Japanese/Korean etc commentators do do exactly the same to English-sounding names (my guess is they so so do) is because we watch the English-sounding streams, okay?

And he doesn't have enough respect for a 3 time world champion to take 5 seconds to learn how to pronounce her easily pronounced name? Sure. Just keep making excuses.

Its either laziness, incompetence or racism. Take your pick. I know which one Im leaning toward for the people that are making excuse after excuse.

I tend to ignore most of the ladies competitions, as I find them lacking in energy but I watched Rino on catchup after hearing Chris Howarth say what a wonderful skate it had been. Wow. I thought Kaori just looked bored through both her skates. Rino was outstanding - the speed, the effortlessness, the grace and beautiful music.

She is definitely all of those superlatives. Its been a very long time since I've seen someone skate that good a long after such a terrible short program.

It does happen though, doesn't it? I guess the skater thinks "oh well, I have nothing to lose" and just goes for it. Much harder to do when medals are at stake.

Yes it does. But rarely to that extreme, from virtually an error on everything to an error on virtually
nothing. Lol

Just pointing out that your post was factually incorrect. But don't let the facts get in the way of a good argument.

Whoever it was was, and I didnt mention names, was the official announcer for the broadcast on streaming in the US. That is a fact whether you like it or not.

Since I'm not in the US, I still don't know who you are referring to.

Ted Barton (plus rotating retired skater, one per discipline) did the commentary for Skate Canada and the CBC. He is NOT a professional commentator.

Your beef seems to be with who the US picked up for their streaming. Perhaps you prefer Johnny and Tara? Now THEY are professionals, and can be held to a professional standard!

I never mentioned his name and have nothing personal against him. Since you watched his broadcast, did he pronounce her name correctly? If so, then my compliments to him. My condemnation is for the announcer on the Peacock feed in the US who repeatedly butchers her name.

Most people in/from the USA completely butcher my (relatively common and 'easy' to pronounce) British name. Does that make them lazy, incompetent or racist? No. It is simply that UK English and pronunciation can sometimes be quite different to that in the US, and can also vary between different areas of the UK.

People needs to remember it's very important the context of the situation and the intention of the action, some things can look like an offense or attack in some contexts but it doesn't mean that, I don't think that the fact a commentator can't pronounce properly a name it means it's an attack to the skater, it can means many things, and it doesn't seemed to be in way to mock the skater or it's nation at least in this case

Call me biased if you want, but I think Maddie was underscored in both the SP and LP. I thought she deserved a medal overall. She skated great here. Her best competition in years.
