No. It's not all about me. I'm not trying to be selfish.

I understand and know that racism is a very serious issue. I really really do. But it's just that, well this thread is going to turn into a debate about racism in lyrics (Okay I realized that saying "I don't want" is going to make me sound selfish so I said this instead) instead of telling us about programs for the upcoming season. However, maybe making another thread about it could be a good idea to discuss it here.

And I understand no one is on my side. And that I could get banned because I writing about this.

Well, if you look at the words of the song, it isn't just a song that talks about or raises awareness of racism. It is a song that relates personal experience. It is angry from the mouth, as it were, of experience. It is an African American man speaking out. It isn't general. So, a white man skating to that is playing a role and then shedding that role and re-assuming white privilege as soon as he finishes.

No, people will not have a debate about racism in lyrics, people will have a debate about appropriateness of skating to certain lyrics. Actually, it will be discussing a particular skating program which is the topic of this thread. And so what? They will have a debate, they will finish the debate, the thread will move on. Meanwhile you feel like this is not the right topic and not the right place for the topic and you are making a big deal out of it (and frankly, establishing a separate thread for it is making a way bigger deal out of the issue than just discussing it here) and you are trying to persuade people not to discuss it. It's not about you.

I can't say that I'm a fan of rap or Kanye but Black Skinhead has a really great beat IMO and rap music is actually good for interpretation via movement. I swear, rap music only makes sense to me when I see people dance to it.

I've had a debate on here about cultural appropriation before, and I think most people don't realize a lot of what goes on in the world is problematic. Just because its the social norm doesn't make it acceptable and that people shouldn't raise question. People should be self-aware and it is important to realize that cultural context is extremely important. The meaning of what one does versus someone else doing the same thing changes when you take cultural context into consideration. :ohwell:
 
Upon further research, I think they're calling Jeremy's program a "Wolf on Wall Street" program, for the Leonardo Di Caprio film that uses "Black Skinhead" in the trailer/film. (Jeremy used the hashtag #ProjectWolf to discuss the upcoming program on twitter).

At best this changes the lens from which HE views this program--he sees it as a program based on a movie which uses this song, which is why he uses this song--rather than a "pure" expression of the music and lyrics of the song. Does it change the unfortunate racist implications? No, but at least it reveals his best intentions.

Well, people should feel safe and be allow to say if they feel unconfortable with something, a performance, a song , etc. It´s doesn´t mean that we need to agree, but in a forum where people comes from different countries, religion, and political believes, but to be able to say it is important.

Having say that, this discussipon could be taking to another thread, to no disturbe this subject.

And I really think that is people feel offended maybe telling Jeremy about it will help, in here is just a person offended but, certanly can be offending unintentionaly more people and at least if he knows how people feel he can made a decision to continue to perform the program or not.

I thought the purpose of this thread was to discuss new competitive programs. Bickering about a show program that may never be seen again doesn't really seem relevant in this particular thread. And maybe people should take it up with Jeremy if they have a problem with it? I'm not a fan of his at all, but I'm sure he never purposely set out to offend anyone. If you think he needs to be "educated," surely there are better avenues to do that.

I have for sometime now had a problem with KanyeWest but Jeremy is alright in my books.:)

Well, here's my predicament: if I say it's offensive, I'll get ripped to shreds by the people who want to end this conversation; if I say it isn't, I'll get ripped to shreds by the people who want the discussion to go on/disagree with that. I will not say which one because neither option is favorable, so I will go neutral. Although the pies might be helpful. :laugh2:
 
The title of the thread is: 2015-16 Programs By Discipline. Not competive programs, just programs. Now it has been reported that Abbott is skating to this song as an ex. It looks like it may be his new ex for the season. So discussing it would seem to fit the thread.

This thread has not just been a thread of reporting programs. There has been much discussion about all sorts of issues to do with these programs. Just perusing the thread for all of 30 seconds gained me: whether a skater would be better to choose a sad character rather than a happy one; a detailed discussion of the characterisation of Semei and the all-important issue of whether Hanyu would wear pink frills.

But god forbid a discussion on a socially relevant aspect of a program gets discussed. Just because some people feel uncomfortable. I give up.

2 pages of whether Gatsby is becoming a new POTO and 2 pages of discussion on warhorses.

And somehow nobody was complaining then.

It's a discussion thread about programs, let people disucuss what they want to disucss about those programs.

People who don't feel comfortable with the topic are free not disucss it.

Well, to each their own. I am a firm believer in variety, especially in skating shows. There are sooo many skaters who do serious, romantic, dramatic programs and I appreciate it when humor is added to the group. The audience loved it and many of the skaters came to the rink-side especially to see this particular EX. :p
