2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

I don't know if it has already been said but :

Moore-Towers/Marinaro
SP : If I can't have you, by Etta James
FS : Selections of the Romeo&Juliet soundtrack
Both choreographed by Julie Marcotte

Wow. Yes, this music for Dice is lovely. I'm starting to get quite excited about seeing him this season. Between that beautiful debut of his short program--with more stretch and line--and this music selection and those 3 quad salchows . . . and Frank's magic.

Interesting how we have at least three piano pieces now among the top men. I remember when it seemed like the men's event was nothing but pounding Matrixes & Gladiators.

Well, now you cannot be an Artist and do pounding Matrixes or Gladiators... Gone are the days when you could use Epic Soundtracks and still be an Artist... (Ah, Yags... )

Ksenia Monko / Kirill Khaliavin
SD: Howl's moving castle (Merry-go-Round?) Joe Hisaishi; choreo by Zhulin, Petuhov.
FD: Nathan Lanier composition; choreo by Zhulin, Petuhov.

Huh? Where does this come from? Ice Dance didn't say people who do pounding Matrixes and Gladiators are not artists. She didn't even say that people who do piano pieces are artists. She just said it seems to her that piano piececs are becoming more common.

I didn't say that Ice Dance had said so - I was merely bemoaning how times have changed, and the general perception of what makes an "Artist". And that's why we don't get so many Epic Soundtracks anymore. Those are quite uncommon now, and those who do do them, aren't generally considered "Artists". (It's a personal preference that I'd like to see more skaters - ladies espectially - do more Epic; but since not even the men are doing them so much... it's a shift in what is fashionable at the moment, I suppose... regretful sigh.)

I certainly didn't mean my comment as some kind of attack on - or accusation of - Ice Dance, and I hope ID won't take it as such. (I get the impression that is how you perceived it, though obviously I may be mistaken - but I assure you that was not the intent.)

Anyone tell them to watch the movie or read the book, please.

Yeahh exactly. I don't want it to ends up like Marina Zueva's choreography for Nausicaa fantasia, what a waste.

Video just posted on TSL's Facebook page:

Ashley Cain's SP at Liberty. 37.01. (choreography by Jeremy Abbott). Thank you to Freddy Budde for the video.

ETA, from the Philadelphia comp thread on Thursday, referring to Wednesday:
... Hoping that Ashley Cain will be able to skate. According to her dad, Peter Cain (delightful guy - my friend & I got to talk to him yesterday), she may have a stress fracture. ...

ETA:
Ashley Cain's SP was limited by Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis in her right foot, per photo #3 in this IN gallery:

Yuka Nagai JPN
SP Rachmaninoff Concerto No.3, choreo by Kenji Miyamoto

Yuka Nagai changed her SP music to Madame Butterfly :hopelessness:
SP Madame Butterfly; choreo by Kenji Miyamoto
FS August's Rhapsody (soundtrack from August Rush); choreo by Shae-Lynn Bourne

Ksenia Monko / Kirill Khaliavin
SD: Howl's moving castle (Merry-go-Round?) Joe Hisaishi; choreo by Zhulin, Petuhov.
FD: Nathan Lanier composition; choreo by Zhulin, Petuhov.

Absolutely love it! I was actually hoping that someone would skate to Joe Hisashi music :cheer:

No worries. This is how I interpreted your comment. Cannot say I miss the Matrix or all the non-Yagudin Gladiators. And I would actually say that Baz Luhrmann probably considers his films to have Epic Soundtracks. To me this is part of his directing style, particularly with R&J. To take a classic story and give it the epic action treatment. But there are definitely fewer epic action-movie soundtracks in skating these days (though I don't think we're getting rid of Spartacus any time soon), and I do agree with your comment to some effect. I'm not a fan of closing doors on any particular style of music. Yagudin is proof that a great artist can use an action soundtrack to great effect. My guess is they'll be back as soon as we get another Academy Award winning action flick.

ETA: And Hanyu's current LP is a soundtrack so--who knows--they may be back even sooner than that.

Well, we did get Michal's Game of Thrones last season, and at least a couple other guys used your favorite, Two Step From Hell. I don't necessarily want to see The Matrix or Gladiator again, but there is no reason why there can't still be room for that kind of style. Variety is the spice of life and I would be very bored - nay, comatose - if everyone started skating to piano music or sappy love songs.

Great point. There's been a dearth on quality (or rather, Oscar-recognized) action movies in recent years, which may contribute to the lack of action movie soundtracks being used.

Why didn't we get a bunch of Lord of the Rings programs when that series was a hit? I would've loved that.
