2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

Because I tend to think Polina is as bad a match for Scarlett as was Alexandra Aldridge this last season.

Which wardrobe do you think would more suit Polina in your opinion?

I think she would look better in Melanie's pastels than Scarlett's vibrant reds, greens, and purples.

Just to clarify my earlier response to you on this thread: my NO NO NO is because I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU, as you can see from my comments here:

I think Polina would like to think of herself as a Scarlet, and she may have some superficial character traits in common, but her on-ice personality is so not Scarlet that I see a disaster of epic proportions on the horizon. What in hell are she and her team thinking? Are they thinking at all?

I'm big on color /season theory for people. Polina looks to me like an early spring, so yes, the pastels and softer pinks etc are a good match for her skin tone. Jewel tones are going to swallow her up. Just like her music this season. It's like Moby Dick on ice. !!!

So your claim that this is the wrong music choice is mostly based on the way Polina looks vs the way Vivian Leigh looked, which I suppose is what most people envision Scarlet to look like? What music SHOULD skaters with light skin tone and color skate to, anyway?

I don't think the reasoning is that shallow. I think it stems from Polina's on ice personality. She found it so difficult to pull off a convincing flamenco (?? last season SP) so of course there would be reservations that she could pull off something so demanding as Scarlett.

If you'll allow me to digress, IMHO both of A/E dances were ill fitted to the pair. Alexandra was not convincing as either Carmen or Scarlett. It had nothing to do with her looks but rather her personality and acting abilities.

Who knows maybe Polina will show us a new side to her this season.

Give her some credit for wanting to branch out and mature her style. She's said before that she knows she's an elegant and lyrical skater, but props to her for challenging herself with something new. It sounds like her team has put a lot of thought into the different selections of GWTW that they chose and at least have a vision for how they want her to develop artistically, which is more than what can be said for a lot of other skaters.

If she stayed with the pink and blue pastels year after year, everyone would criticize her for being too one-dimensional or juniorish. Hell, everyone jumped on her for wearing pink and doing a soft fairy program last year. I'm reserving judgment until I see the new programs.

I agree. It's always good to be versatile. It shows that you are willing to try new things to show people that "I don't only do *insert theme or style* so please don't typecast me."

And pink is an awesome color in my opinion.

I'm eager to see how it's going to turn out. Guess we'll have to wait a few more days to find out.

I guess they are trying the Javi route for Kovtun, after nothing else has worked for him presentation-wise.

Elena Illinykh (sp?) would make a fabulous Scarlett O'Hara. Or an Anna Karenina.

Ilinykh would make an absolutely fabulous Scarlett, and if memory serves me right she loves GWTW. Though the music is hauntingly beautiful I wouldn't wish Anna K. on anyone, the story is just so, so tragic. But the question remains who could do the choreo for an epic GWTW?

My response was to WeakAnkles post, where I only saw Polina's looks being discussed and not her persoality.

As for using the fact that she had difficult time with Flamenco as a supportive argument that she won't be able to interpret GWTW adequately -well, I don't think the two are comparable. Flamenco is a dance genre that requires a very specific way of moving and attitude. To dance it well, it requires a dancer years of training. For a skating program, the choreography needs to be done--and the skater/dancer performing the choreography also has to perform--in a specific way in order to retain authenticity of the dance. Many skaters can't pull it off for a variety of reasons. It's also simply a difficult dance. GWTW, OTOH, is a movie soundtrack, and by nature the interpretation will be open-ended. One can do a good job skating to soundtrack music even without the intent of playing a specific role from the movie, as long as the music is being adequately interpreted.

Ashley too can make an amazing Scarlett too. It should be interesting. Wonder if Polina may dye her hair :p It feels almost like over compensation for Tinkerbell last year.

Oh.

When Polina's hair is pulled up, she looks like more of a brunette. Plus her eyes are green/brown, not bright blue, so looks wise I don't see issues with her portraying Scarlett O'Hara. Plus she has the skintone to pull of darker, bright colors (the blue SP dress last season, some of her dresses in earlier seasons) as well as pastels. I think the program should probably be fine, I'm even looking forward to it. It's definitely stronger and more mature than her Tinkerbell program and I hope to see her match that with her skating.

Oh my - skating to GWTW. I hope she doesn't wear a green velvet dress made from curtains..........................The music is beautiful and certainly open to a grand presentation. I do think I would prefer Ashley skating to it though.

Absolutely true, but she does intend to play a role. At least that's what I assume from article and her instagram. And that's why I don't like it. She may have good program technically, maybe even good choreo, the judges may like it, as well as people who aren't familiar with a character and some who are. But for some of us, it just won't be good enough, because she probably won't be convicing Scarlett. If she proves me wrong, I'll take it back, but I'm preparing for the worst. It would be other story, if she just wanted use the music....

I listened to Evgenia Medvedeva choices and I like it :)

Yes I believe Polina is definitely going to be literally portraying Scarlett if her words are any indication.

“My long program is to music from a wonderful Oscar Award winning movie where I am expressing the main character of the story. It’s a difficult piece because we have combined four different tempos of music, with emotions and different times of life as the main character grows.”

Some posters seem to be doubting whether or not Polina can pull off Scarlett, but considering how she tends to come off as abrasive and overconfident in her interviews, I think she'll be able to play the role rather well. Her personality is definitely not that of a "mealy-mouthed" Melanie Hamilton!

(I used to be a pretty big GWTW fan :)).

Ngl, I did laugh when someone on Twitter imagined a prospective scenario:

"I don't think I should have had an edge call."

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn."

:laugh2:
