2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

I completely agree but honestly it's too early to judge a program in terms of emotions, nuances, interpretation etc. The more you skate the better it becomes. I'm not a fan of the Moonlight Sonata. I'm not sure she is the best skater for this music either but from what I can see it's a big change from the last season's SP. I really didn't like that program and her skating to it. I thought it was mediocre at best. This one has potential.

Yes, I do realize I'm nitpicking a bit. Namely cause I was expecting to be wowed based on some of the comments. So I was surprised at my tepid reaction to it. However, as I said, from a brain standpoint, I think this is a good program (as I said well-choreographed) but needs more mileage. I also would like her to flow more with her movements. She had beautiful arm movements, but they feel a bit detached to me...I'd like to see them be an extension of her who,e body rather than an action with one part of it.

All that said, she has the foundation, the technical aspects of the choreography so I am open to liking it more as the season continues.

The choreo at the beginning seems interesting, like she is portraying a bird. Also, there are a lot of good moments. The costume is very nice, I only don't like the back line. The jumps weren't really there though and she was slow during the step sequence. The music cuts at the end don't seem good to me and she still need to sell the program. Overall, I think it has potential but she needs to sell it.

So sick of Firebird!! Why choose it? It's been done a zillion times! I really was hoping she'd choose something more original and upbeat this season.

Compare to her previous programs, this is a big improvement. I am more skeptical about her SP (and that dress!!) but well at least she doesn't play princess anymore.

Now why hasn't Frank told her to not jump too close to the board especially that 3lz3T???

She wouldn't be so close to the boards if she would stop hesitating between the 3z and the 3t.

I like her programs and feel like there is going to be a very fun and free feeling to her this year.

It seems like she needs more time to set up for that 3T.

But everytime I watch I feel like she needs to pop that 3t quicker. She puts her free leg up and then holds it a bit too long and by the time she lets it go she's nearly up against the boards when it's time for the landing.

I guess in the SP she'd be better served to take off quicker. Like at that speed maybe starting at the hash marks of the face off circle (hockey terms) isn't a great idea.

I think we both agree this is avoidable. Maybe start at center ice instead of closer to the blue line with the set up or create an angle from the opposite side of the rink from the blue line in and make a diagonal line toward the opposite corner which will hopefully take more time and sort of artificially lengthen the ice and create more room for a edge out of there.

sorry for putting this here, but I wish someone would skate to Ben Howard's song - preferably 'Keep your head up', 'I forgot where we were' or 'Figure 8' (Ellie Goulding's acoustic cover).

I'm currently listening this kind of stuff while at work and imagining how beautiful would programs look to this music...

plus - to the point - I am REALLY curious at this point about Papadakis/Cizeron, Weaver/Poje and Gilles/Poirier musical choices for the upcoming season. However - if Peter Tchernyshev is choreographer of FD (?) for Kaitlyn and Andrew (as he worked with them along with Benji Schwimmer) I am pretty sure it would be great. Still - the anticipation about Gabriella and Guillaume is killing me slowly, wish they would use some Edith Piaf for their waltz SD...And please no warhorse for FD (my dream about them doing Swan Lake is haunting me:hopelessness:

Man there is one song I hope Piper and Paul do for their FD. But I'm pretty sure that's not going to happen.

It seems like she needs more time to set up for that 3T.

Watch the landing of the 3Lz. She clearly opened up the free side a little bit and had to re-check to be able to fully rotate the 3T. Don't look at her feet, look at her left arm. I think she should set her Lutz in the traditional CCW Lutz corner with the same timing she's got in between the face off circles. It would give her more space.

The 3F looked better. Needs additional work, but it wasn't so blatantly outside edge.

The first 2A setup was different than any she's done previously. I wonder if this is because they would put the 3A there if she gets it consistent off the harness (I have no idea where it's at, but it was so out of her normal set up that I took note of it). Out of the steps, the speed is moderated a LOT and they didn't spend a lot of time regaining speed for the 2A. You see a lot of moderated speed in Juvenile and Intermediate with 2A attempts where the choreography doesn't give the ability to gain speed because it's almost directly out of a spin or steps so that the skaters can control the jump better.

And, seriously, she looks like she's in bad condition? It's AUGUST not December and the programs are both new. Did you see her last year at GF? Or her couple of SLC International competitions? She looked to be in a lot worse shape at those. If she's in bad condition, what does that say for Polina or Courtney who didn't skate nearly as well? Her SP seemed a lot rougher than the LP. To me, the LP was a better match for her personality than the SP so far, but we'll see. Also, I think the skirt for the SP needs to be a little bit shorter as her spins seemed to not center on a dime like normal.

Polina's SP is going to be a hit eventually once she stops "doing the choreography" and starts "performing the choreography". I'd like see more speed and a less telegraphed Lutz entrance, but the concept is very eye catching. The LP, well, meh. For me, it totally missed the GWTW mark, especially if she's supposed to be Scarlett. And the dress needs to be changed. It's another pastel nightmare on her. She needs something bolder. Also, club competitions often have events on multiple surfaces simultaneously, so the noise shouldn't have been a huge surprise, especially if it was Junior ladies. I'd guess that it's either open at the top of the bleachers between the two rinks or it's not well insulated (my home rink has a glass wall at the top of the bleachers between rinks and you can here everything on the other rink ALL THE TIME no matter how loud your music is playing. You learn to tune out the sound of hockey. ;) ).

Mariah Bell looks to be on the right path and she's another skater that is Rohene's muse choreographically. That LP is just gorgeous. :) Glad to see her try 2 +3s in her jump combos. Her LP right now is better than her SP as well, even with that weird random fall in her step sequence.

Courtney Hicks, on the other hand, was given the short end of the stick with that LP. Rohene does not do well with skaters who are more atheletic than artistic and who aren't naturally flexible. :( I like the SP. That inside edge spread eagle got my attention!

Everyone is discuss about Jason, Polina and Gracie's program. Here's one I like and was pleasantly surprised by

Never thought I'd hear Ewan McGregor in a skating program, but hey first time for everything. Thanks Richard.

I like this program alot. His team have a very good understanding how to edit and layering vocal music and not and letting vocals become too much of a distraction and instead always complement his choreography style. What he does very well is building and sustain poignant emotionals so naturally and effortlessly with his unhurried controlled movements, beautiful edge work, layering on and building up those powerful finales with ease and flow. Between him and Abbott, they are rocking the lyric rule to make it distinctively their own. The program is not perfect yet of course, but i can see great potentials as it matures with the season. (I suspect he will add a few more transitions and improves his stamina, the last section need greater clarity in movement and musicality.)

Ignore the poor acoustics aside. The song is from Moulin Rouge, Come what may. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjTPIET9wH8

Any news on his LP?

Last season, I never thought I'd hear Nicole Kidman or Jennifer Lopez either! :)

Ricky had a stronger start to last season and kind of fizzled out by the time Nationals rolled around. His mom was sick at the time, so I wonder if that had to do with it? (Anyone know how his mom is doing?)

Not sure about his long, but we'll know soon.

Thank you, os168. While this program has some smooth skating in it, choreographically it's not so interesting for me - at least not yet. But if we could hear Nicole Kidman in a skating program, why not Ewan McGregor from the same movie? Although, come to think of it, the character of Satine is more likely to be chosen for interpretation in a skating program than Christian.

She was at the Broadmoor Jump event. She did not appear to have outward health issues.

I am just looking for potentials at the moment :) I like programs that is a little bit out of the box and probably of give it bit more benefit of doubt than it deserve. It is early season, so everyone's program is just testing waters and likely undercooked, but based on the music build up, it has good potential % for that wow euphoric moment we love in our figure skating programs. Followed by standing ovations, and tears on ice!

Hope Richard's mum is doing well and some how he can manage his season better along with his uni obligations.
