2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

*Sigh* more Muse... Not my favorite, to say the least.

So they allow lyrics now, and some skaters are taking chances using more 'contemporary' music... but, yes, why does it need to be Muse all the time?

Do they see other successful skaters using Muse, and think, "Well, it worked for them, so let's do it too!" Or do all skaters listen to the same music together?

Ditto.

ETA - I suppose there's no point in my hoping that it will be at least only instrumental... ? No, I suppose not... (sighs despondently)

It might be because Muse is the best known contemporary band whose music is very grandiose and bombastic and going beyond the basic verse-chorus-verse-chorus song structure, which I imagine is very figure skating friendly. The same reasons why Queen music is figure skating friendly: big, varied, well-known.

And if any skater did a program to Survival by Muse they'd get 10 points extra in my books for sheer audacity, lol.

I don´t know Muse very well but while the skaters use differents songs I don´t see the problem.

Kovtun 's new Lp http://dai.ly/x31u7f8

I'm sorry I know this is a bit mean but... Seriously what were they thinking. It's Beethoven medley not Figaro medley. Why he turns it into comedy I have no idea.

And here's Nam's new SP http://dai.ly/x31ul20
A bit generic IMO.

Mura's new Lp http://dai.ly/x31u8jy
I don't like the shirt.

And Adam new SP http://dai.ly/x31u7tf
I don't like the shirt again.

He was trying to convey the uplifting lightness of the music :slink: in the tradition of Javier's comic programs, Peter Brna's Violin's, and Urmanov's interpretation of Swan Lake. :slink::cry:

I truly feel sorry for Maxim. This could have won Sochi, then I'd seriously

Kanako Murakami's new SP El Tango De Roxanne (+ new insurgent haircut)
Ewan Mac continues to be the by far the most popular singer this season :) It must be some jedi voodoo thing. Can he over take Queen and Muse!?

I really like Kovtun's program. Different but very entertaining and he seems more into it than he ever was into his Muse program. I hope competition reality won't drain him of all the fun.

My biggest issue is the music is Beethoven sym 5 and 9!!! Since when these syms are background for comedy??

Well, why not? Is there any reason why Beethoven's music should be always treated dead serious? The parts he uses are amongst world's most overplayed pieces ever, poking fun at it is the way to go. The comedic effect is way better than if he were skating to Figaro.

And, 5th and 9th have been used as background comedy in a number of parodies, commercials etc.

The thing is a minute after that he plays deadly serious expression. And it's not coherent to me. Why you're goofy the minute before now you're playing tragic? What does that mean? Tragic comedy???
If they aim at a comedy program using Beethoven music, then they're not doing well. Because it doesn't look that "funny" to me. It looks awkward.

Seems pretty coherent to me. The "deadly serious" only emphesizes the ridiculousness of the goofy parts. But it may be just my impression, another explanation is that Maxim can't quite pull off what was intended. Still, I really enjoy it, more than I would enjoy a serious approach to that music by most skaters, and certainly more than serious approach by Kovtun. As I said, better fit to Kovtun, IMO, than his last year's programs so there's that. The biggest problem I see is that under stress of the competition Maxim will crack and even the current comedic parts will get wiped out and the the program will fall completely flat. (kinda like Javi's Figaro to be honest.)

I think it is a case if they are going to laugh at me anyway, i might as well do a comedy since it is MEANT to be funny!! Haharr, so there!! I am so clevaaa!!

Perhaps he doesn't realise yet - dying is easy, comedy is hard - Just ask any veteran performer! Take three of the most serious music and then make fun of it without context, where is the joke? What is the joke? Where is the irony? Is puffy shirt, funny expressions alone enough of qualify for comedy? Competition is funny? Had it be something like Patrick Chan who has done serious classic music and fully capable of deliver a well interpreted version, then the joke would be on him, because the effect would be surprising and delightful like Meryl Streep who does comedy and then a mamamia.

There's a fine line with tragic comedy and comedy that is tragic. It will be interesting to see how Max work this one out by season end. This combination with 'I can't dance' for his SP seem to indicate these pair of programs are self deprecating, but for satire to work, the performer need to be truly willingly surrender himself completely to performing without ego. However if they picked these choices only to avoid the obvious that YES he can't dance, and that he is not funny, then well... I am dreading an awkward german silent audience every time :P
