2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

Seems pretty coherent to me. The "deadly serious" only emphesizes the ridiculousness of the goofy parts. But it may be just my impression, another explanation is that Maxim can't quite pull off what was intended. Still, I really enjoy it, more than I would enjoy a serious approach to that music by most skaters, and certainly more than serious approach by Kovtun. As I said, better fit to Kovtun, IMO, than his last year's programs so there's that.

That's my feeling tbh although it's a little premature to judge him now on that one. The risk here is big, I think. In the competition the skater is under high pressure and if for example the skater fall in the first or second jump and is not able to pull off a brave face, smile and continue to sell the program because he/she is concerned or start worry, thinking about the next elements etc. the program falls apart. The comedy/parody stuff are very difficult in general for anyone and if something goes wrong and you let that effect you I'm afraid the final result in programs like this is more a tragicomedy and the whole thing will look very awkward. I don't think he has it in him to pull off properly something like this but the people who did the program knows him way better and he may surprise us in positive. Who knows?

Edit: I see now os168 post. He/she expressed my point as well better than I did.

The biggest problem I see is that under stress of the competition Maxim will crack and even the current comedicarts will get wiped out and the the program will fall completely flat. (kinda like Javi's Figaro to be honest.)
Even in ice show, I still don't get the "joke" which might have been intended in the first place. So that's the biggest issue. I mean yes it's not the first time some deadly serious music was taken out of the context to be made fun of. But in this case I'd say Kovtun doesn't have enough "fun". I mean this kind of intention, maybe Oda can do because he has good sense of humor in his blood. Kovtun? I'm not sure.

He must've been inspired one of those Shakespeare comedies where the most random, irrelevant things happen at the time they're convenient for the plot with no context whatsoever!

LOL, I just hope he gets some horrible period costume, or something totally irrelevant to the music like Le Bleu Spydurmanne.
That would have Umlauts if my computer did them.

EDIT: Oh wait, he does have a horrible period costume! I love purple, but WHY? WHY did they put him in a purple velvet vest?!? :sarcasm::scowl:

I have no problem with Kovtun using Beethoven for a comedy program. I saw a few glimpses of something entertaining in there, but he has trouble staying in character, which ruins the effect. He's no Javier, that's for sure. But it is a brand new program and I'm sure it will be polished some more, so I'm not going to say that he can't possibly make it work. The feedback at the test skates (if he goes...he missed them last year, iirc) will be interesting.

It does have potential, but the facial expressions make it very hard to take him seriously. Like, at all, and this is a comedy program. Tone down the tortured facial expressions and change the costume, and I might actually like it somewhat.

This pretty much sums up my feelings as well. There is potential in the idea, and some parts i liked (the fake backflip for instance). But I am not sure he is the right skater for this. One of these days he is likely to have a meltdown and I think this program would be very uncomfortable to watch in meltdown mode. It kinda is one that you have to nail.

Can we just stop picking on Kovtun? Please......

Nobody is picking on him, I believe. They are all expressing an opinion.

The FanFests are for complete positivity. In the other threads, people can express any constructive opinion, as far as I'm aware.

The programme seemed awkward to me. The music has flourishes that could be played comedically, I suppose, but they are brief and most of the music does not suit that interpretation, IMO. And, the effort is there, but at the moment Kovtun doesn't really sustain the interpretation anyway.

I like Kovtun. I don't know why nor do I care to ever know why. I just like him :)

I don't mind the attempt at comedy skating to Beethoven--it reminds me of Looney Tunes and Bugs Bunny, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's nice to Kovtun TRYING to do something with his expression at times in the program, at least, and he's doing something new for him. My main problem isn't the theme of the program, but the details. Too much arm-waving and posing, not enough going on with his feet.

May I suggest you not watch Ashley's program then.

I liked Laetitia Hubert's freaky programs where it looked like she was signaling Aliens in for a landing with her arms more than most people did but Ashley's program from this show has similar arm movements. I of course was strangely drawn to it :)

Maé-Bérénice Meité announced on Instagram that her SP will be to Black Swan.

Ooh! I have a feeling she's going to make a great black swan :) It seems like an excellent vehicle for her. Because Mae-Berenice is a really powerful skater and known for being super fierce, I'm guessing we'll get a unique interpretation of the piece (which is good).

I believe I did watch it! Or at least one I saw posted yesterday. But not with the same things in mind than if it was going to be her competitive program. When I'm watching a show-only program I just think about whether or not I like it, but if it's going to be a competitive program I am more critical. Of course, Kovtun is skating at a show, so it's possible the details will be ironed out come competition time.

For purposes of fan fest updating, I watched G/P's FD and used Shazam to get the music. It says it's the soundtrack from something called "I Am Dina," but I'm not absolutely sure if that's accurate.

I'm the kind of person who thinks that, WHEN Shazam FIND something, it's true. Otherwise it would be completely useless.
(I shazamed the song and it gave me nothing)

Mae and black swan? Wow interesting idea! Rock it Mae!!

Well, it found "I Am Dina" in the first ten seconds, and then it wouldn't find anything, so that's probably it.
