2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

FINALLY!

I loved their past two FDs, so I hope this will be awesome too!

Me too.

Alba, thank you for the details as well. It sounds like the free program was likely Rach. 2 originally (otherwise the quote wouldn't just mention the "pattern of the piece," but the piece itself); but the music has been edited in some way, shape, or form. Of course classical music is always edited, but in this case the music has been re-edited since the original choreography (and not just by adding sound effects or a beat or a stronger base, etc. but maybe by changing the order of the music or selecting different cuts). Guess we shall just have to see what we shall see.

No I don't think it has to do with sound effects. More like what you said, changing the order of the music or selecting different cuts.

Lynn Rutherford reported that "While choreography is overseen by Shpilband, the skaters also worked with Antonio Najarro, the Spanish dancer .... Veronique Breen, a former ballet dancer and off-ice conditioning specialist, .. also an important contributor" clearly suggesting the FD was a collaborative effort. This is expected because of the nature of the discipline/art form that prompts some adjustments like rearranging the musical structure of the piece to enable the program intent/desired look and the discipline’s requirements.

The original choreography was done by Najarro, only. That much I'm sure and I knew (not only me. It was a well known thing) since a month ago, if not more. Now, Igor has scrapped the original one and most probably has kept from the original program as much as he could. Obviously something didn't work out. It happens and better change earlier, even more so when the competition has not even started, than later. It's not a big deal.

As noted earlier, Orford/Hill's FD is to "The Theory of Everything", so if you love the movie or the soundtrack, check it out:

I know nothing about the movie or the soundtrack, but I  the program, especially from a brand new pair!

ETA: didn't mean they were the *only* ones with this FD music, just that they were skating to it.

If the skaters or coaches think the program would not work, the wise thing to do is scrap or change it. It happened to Davis and White,

"For the second consecutive season, the team has scrapped a competitive program after gaining feedback from judges and officials at U.S. Figure Skating's Champs Camp, which was held Aug. 26-29 in Colorado Springs.

In late summer of 2010, the three-time U.S. ice dancing champions changed their Golden Waltz short dance from a program set to the Amelie soundtrack to one choreographed to an opera medley. The switch worked: Davis and White won every event they entered.

This time around, the change was more complex. The skaters and their coaches, Igor Shpilband and Marina Zoueva, put a free dance to Nino Rota's La Strada score into mothballs in favor of a more light-hearted routine to the Johann Strauss operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat).

"After a lot of review with the judges, and a lot of ideas being thrown around as to how [we could] kind of adjust the free dance, we just decided to go in a truly different direction," Davis, 24, said.

"Any time you have to change a program after already having made a program, it's a little bit of a bummer, but we're super thrilled with the outcome," the 23-year-old White said.

"We really exceeded our highest expectations for the choreography, especially for having made it so quickly," he continued. "We enjoyed doing the Nino Rota program, but in the end it just wasn't making everybody happy."

A strict on-ice interpretation of La Strada, Federico Fellini's bleak 1954 film about an itinerant circus strongman and his abusive relationship with a child-like young woman who assists him in his act, was never planned. It doesn't comply with ISU guidelines, which suggest free dance music has "an uplifting effect." In addition, Davis and White weren't interested in going the tragic route.

"I really fell in love with the music, and I really thought it had a lot of great emotion and we would be able to connect to it and with it," White said. "The program we made did exactly that; however, we didn't follow the story of the movie, and I think that caused some confusion, which is just the opposite of what you want.

"You don't want the judges to feel they are confused when they are watching something for any reason, even if they eventually got what we were going for. Right off the bat, we don't want them to be thinking, 'They are not doing this enough. They are not portraying the characters enough.'"

Turning to Die Fledermaus, a comedic tale of multiple mistaken identities highlighted by an uproarious masquerade ball, came relatively easily.

"Marina, for a long time, has been telling us that it would make a great program for us, and I guess we were going to get around to it eventually," White said. "It kind of made it easier that there was this option floating around, that we had talked about before." Yes. That's what I said. It happened and happens to a lot of skaters. If it dosen't work it ain't good for you. I don't know why some are acting like it's a bad thing. I'm not crazy about Igor's choreography but if it works for them, and it has worked so far, who cares?!

Wasn't that Hawayek and Baker ?

I knew that music choice sounded familiar when I read the Hawayek/Baker article this morning. Who knew we'd see a Battle of the Stephen Hawkings this year?

"Battle of the Stephen Hawkings." I never thought I would ever see that phrase ever.

Add me to that list...

Although, to be fair, I never thought I'd see a renowned psychologist competing in a JGP almost 80 years after his death.

I am referring, of course, to Ivan Pavlov (a Russian junior who happens to be named after a dead famous guy). ;)

It's a good figure skating year to be a scientist!

Yeah, I was just referring to Pavlov and Hawking.

But if an Einstein, Newton, or Sagan shows up, let me know.

Not sure if we'll actually get to see the battle. A lot has to happen for these two teams to meet up this season. But neither have been listed for a challenger event yet so for all we know they could both be on the next list published. I think I will root for that. I loved Orford & Hill's debut, BTW; but I didn't realize it was the same music selection until someone pointed it out. Thanks for the heads-up.

super happy for ToE soundtrack being used in FS!! this movie is all kinds of awesome
not a fan of H/B though

Likely not, unless O/H get a GP slot with H/B. Worlds is very unlikely. Maybe a senior b?

Love ToE soundtrack for H/B. The music is good; the movie...not so much (and this is coming for a person who knows science).

I liked the movie a lot! But I'm not judging.

However because the soundtrack came from that movie, I'm VERY excited. Especially since I'm going to all events at Skate America.

55 Days (until the events start)! :party2:

I made a countdown online. :p

I need to make one on my phone.

But even more important, I need to book flights and hotels with my dad first. And send an absence form into my cheer coach because since I'm coming back on Sunday, I have to miss the stunt clinic that my team helps out at. Well we have multiple ones but still. Oh I should do it now.
