2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

On Elena's short: remember Mariah's wonderful Titanic program? And how it was free of any borderline-hysterical drama? That program is a lot like what I want to see from Elena. The sheer joy she skates with most of the time would be perfect if she was going to do a program somewhat like Mariah's. So maybe it won't be that bad-there have been really good interpretations of that music.

Elena's has Celine Dion, though - did Mariah's? I don't remember it clearly, but so far as I recall, it had only instrumental, and if so, they are bound to be pretty different.

Lovely program! There was something very Carolina Kostner in the way she moved in that exquisite step sequence.

The step sequence is my least favorite part but she is really a lovely skater and I love that program too.

Battle of the Samba for the AA ladies: Ashley vs Adelina.

As samba goes, I quite like the music edit for Adelina's version.... it is sensual, modern and full of potential. I like the initial drum beat alot (not just any drum, but it is clearly a modern electric drum, liking the new age salute the old.) Problem is Adelina continues to ignore the music and rhythm so completely for the first half when it can be done so easily with specific cues in both the drum beats and the lyrical phrasing, where it's more sensual (it needed that build up to make the next bit make sense), until the all too obvious section when she finally wake up and then finally acknowledge the beat (traditional drum and other percussion instruments all chimed in), and even that didn't quite gel for the rest of the program apart from the 30 seconds burst rapid step mode which was fun but not enough skating. Half of a program that that doesn't acknowledge the music enough does not make a substance program nor good choreography/ interpretation, especially in a Samba program. Given how many times she has performed this already and her 2nd season of this exhibition program, this has much to improve.

Ashley's Samba however was on point from the moment of 'get go'. The attention to detail in her body movements and commitment to the rhythm. She embrace the beat more and although she is not 100% there yet (close though), but this is a great early season effort since the movement of COP skating has its natural limitations. There's enough variance and exuberance in the sway of the hips, pelvic movements, the twitch of the shoulder blades extension from the core to outer limbs, even the improvisational sound track seems more authentic and true to the free spirit of Samba. If it is to improve, perhaps it can look a bit more spontaneous (or fake it to seem spontaneous) to be even more immersive with the beat. Unlike other music, Samba should not just about skating to the beat, acknowledging the beat but 'feel' the beat, and be one with the beat. It needed that sort of loose, earthy, hot, mature woman unwinding exuberance quality. It is a gritty rustic rhythmic street dance of the people, the soul of the lefties, the exhibitionists, carnival, of the free spirited, not one of those ostentatious dressing up hobbies for rich housewives just want to have bit of fun in their boudoir performing to the mirror or for a limited privileged audience. The Latin spirit is better conveyed with Ashley's version to my mind. If i was to be picky, I only wished she has gone for something more exciting and fun in her costume... but it seem to reflect the taste of her choreographer more? Nice midriff though... Whoohooo go and kill it by season end Diva!! :)

Now thinking about exuberance... Radionova should consider do an awesome Samba in a year or two. Oh boy... talk about a natural fit! Sometimes I did think about nicknaming her Flirtinova!

You're welcome :) Somebody else will have to tag the music  I believe there is a few not in this thread yet.

Ashley Wagner SP https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAk3mihxv7w&feature=youtu.be

It's a really nice program, and she moves well. I think she's a little too reserved overall, which is already due to the choreo and not Ashleys interpretation or performance. Since she knows how to sell her progs, I'm sure she's going to do well with this. (And on an superficial note: she looks hot. Male audience in Boston should like that! ;) )

Adelina should get her old partner Gleb Savchenko back to help her with putting more samba in her program then :P

Ashley is more in tune with her music but I hate that she had to use this version of the song. The voice is a little too dramatic in my opinion and the Club Des Belugas version I think would be better. I think she's reusing her outfit from her exhibition this year however it would be nice to see some samba influence in her outfit. I feel like casual viewers will just see it as a sexy performance rather than an actual samba.

Yeah, I wish Ashley had gone with the original version of the song (just for the spoken word parts), but I really like the program. There are several moments where she's doing actual samba steps, which I loved -- I think Shae-Lynn got it right when it comes to content, because you can't actually do samba steps while you're flying across the ice, so they had to be relegated to the parts of the program where she's mostly standing in one spot. I'm curious about her jump content, since she opened with a flip rather than a lutz, and the split jump/falling leaf looks like it was meant to be a triple loop. Maybe she's decided to take out the lutz in the SP and not risk getting an edge call.

I love Adelina's SP much more in everything. Music, choreography and body movements. She really knows how to dance that Samba. Ashley's SP left me Meh.... The music version is terrible. She should use Tessa&Scott's version.

I have the feeling that Ashley's SP will get better in time, she sells it already, but as it's a new program and it doesn't come naturally to her yet. Adelina has already performed her SP a couple of times and she' really into it, I like it very much. When it comes to costuming and music choice Adelina is the clear winner right now. Ashley's costume doesn't do much for her, I don't like that top on her, it makes her shoulders look unnecessarily broad and the skirt isn't my cup of tea either. I usually like Ashley's costumes.
