2018 GP Helsinki Ladies Short Program

Some surprises there... Was rooting for the Finnish girls particularly - pleased to see Emmi at 5th place in her GP debut, but amd displeased at the low levels quite a few of her elements got, StSq1 particularly... Concentrate well on jumps and miss other elements, eh?!

Loena was very good despite the carrots, she is getting more expression into her movement. Hope Kaori is ok - she is usually so consistent with her jumps that it was a bit worrying to see her fall twice. Alina's program is not one of my favourites still, but she is getting slightly better with it. She is good at timing her elements to the music and that gets used a lot, but the realness of the moves is just not there all the time, she executes, but does not perform right to the end.

Pretty sure the age of adulthood in Japan is 20.

The legal age is 20, but you graduate high school at 18. 18-19 is a sort of a limbo-age in Japan, where you are treated like an adult yet are not quite one.

Not only skaters had problems, but Eurovision stream also stumbled, mostly during jumps :palmf: What an awful SP!

All in all, I wish the skaters after today's dismal skates good rest and recovery. Hoping to see them shine tomorrow!

It’s more an issue of whether or not a legal guardian (parents or coach) can force her to undergo medical consultation and possibly treatment. In the US, once you’re 18, that’s it — a court would have to find you incapable of making decisions for yourself (requires profound circumstances). Before I was 18, my parents could sign me up for eating disorder treatment, for example, and check me in, forcing me to get help. Once I turned 18, I would have to present for treatment for anorexia myself and voluntarily enter treatment, for an easy example.

My basic point is that I doubt ISU, Kaori’s coach, etc., can actually stop her from taking to the ice and/or force her to undergo an examination. See also: the Hanyu-Han crash at CoC, and I believe Hanyu was advised not to compete after being examined, but he chose to and couldn’t be forced to sit it out due to injury.

I just had a crazy thought.

Wouldn't it be great if somebody skated to my favourite Charlotte Church song:

Seems kinda appropriate after what we have seen in this SP...

Is this from UK Youtube? I received a not available in your country message using a Canadian server. I am just curious, not complaining ;).

Yes. It's from her Vevo channel. Sorry about that, I didn't realise it would be geo-blocked.

Here are some other videos of the song you can try to see if any of them work:

At least it can only be better in the FS tomorrow. Maybe this was the bad part we had to go through so that we get to see tons of Stepsequences level 4 and clean skates by everyone! :)

(Well, a girl can hope at least...)

Sigh... she really wants to go the GPF. She just let the pressure get to her. Poor girl.
Yep. I thought Alina messing up might add to the pressure too. But all skaters let pressure get 2 them sometimes. Its alot harder when you're expected to do well instead of being new. Last year people went overboard with Wakaba saying she choked when she usually made mistakes when she had more expectations and pressure than many of the others. Kaori should still get a silver if she just relaxes because she's only 6 behind and the field is very weak.

Somebody on twitter said that Kaori had 2 head injuries in a week, it looked like she hit head on 2nd fall here (even though the camera angle from Russian stream was not the best) but where was other injury, during practice?

Only caught Leona onwards but was the ice cursed?

Poor Kaori and Alina in tears. Kaori can pull an Evgenia and make the podium if she skates mad. I hope her head is OK.

Zagitova is super lucky she got an easy lineup for this GP, else her GPF hopes would be at risk too with that score.

Her outfit is gorgeous, but the music cut is terrible.

Evgenia still got bronze with a SP score that was much lower. Alina has the highest scoring FP, she could have won gold even last week with a SP like this. She just needs to be clean in her FS which she’s totally able to pull of. Her GPF hopes aren‘t in danger at all. Of course she is lucky with her event but SP really isn‘t too important at all. She will be clean, I have confidence and faith in her.

I‘m really worried about Kaori, though. Scores wise she can totally pull of a Medvedeva tomorrow if she is healthy. Those falls looked really scary and she already hit her head in the practice. I desperately want her to medal and get her GPF ticket because she deserves it so much but most of all I want her to be healthy. Here‘s to hoping that she‘s physically fine and can slay in the FS tomorrow! :ghug:

Even with a harder lineup, it would be fine.
With such score, she can easily come back in free and score 215+

Im worried about Kaori and kinda... 50-50
hope that she will WD if she is actually injured, and will not pursue a medal here.

She would have been 2nd in Canada and 3rd in USA with that SP. Still would have been pretty good for a medal and even for the win. So she still would have good chances for GPF.

Agreed about the Alina part. It will easily be gold.

Kaori... I hope she isn‘t injured. But I also hope a doctor looks at her because it‘s really dangerous to skate with a concussion. Health is more important than every medal. It‘s just so unfair because she was so good at her first GP and I thought her GPF ticket was almost safe. That‘s why I hope she is fine and can medal tomorrow. But of course, if she is injured it really isn‘t worth it.

i did not see her hit her head on that fall today so i have no idea where people saw it. She did hit the back of her head in practice yesterday, pretty bad it seems, everybody on my twitter who was there live saw it and was freaking out. They had to examine her. She said they asked her to count in reverse but she failed to do so because she forgot how to say numbers in english not because she was not okay :scratch2: idk i'm starting to wonder if she lied about feeling well because she wanted to compete so badly.
Here, you can see they gave her ice for the back of her head https://twitter.com/echotpe/status/1057957635796828160 :(
