A Basic Introduction to the Free Dance...

People who don't watch ID or only watch ID occasionally (like, during the Olympics) tend to sniff at ID or dismiss it as "boring" or "easy". When I've asked a number of these people why they feel this way, two answers crop again and again. ID doesn't have big jumps (well no it doesn't; what it does have is the purest form of skating of all the disciplines) and they don't "get" how it is scored. What is it they're supposed to be looking at? This is probably why even the most casual of viewers love twizzles. They're both very difficult to do, and it's easy to differentiate a good set of twizzles (speed, flow, distance covered are all good) from a bad one (Whoops! They fell. Whoops! They missed catching the blade! Whoops! They lost their balance! Not so good.).

So here we are at the Free Dance. This being figure skating "free" is a relative term. Why yes, even here there are REQUIREMENTS GALORE:

Dance Lifts: Either one combo lift or two short lifts (if you include a choreographic lift, you can now have up to four lifts in a FD program)
Dance Spins: Either one dance spin or combination dance spin
Twizzles: One combination set
Step Sequences: Two, with one in hold and one not touching performed on one foot. Can be either straight line or curved.
Choreographic Elements: Two different elements from the following choices: Choreographic Lift, Choreographic Spinning Movement, Choreographic Twizzling Movement. Choreographic Sliding Movement, Choreographic Character Step Sequence (it's the choreographic equivalent of a Chinese menu!).

Periodically, the ISU goes into a tizzy about Ice Dancing, worried that it is becoming too "athletic" and "not dancey enough." So they do things like limit the number and timing of lifts. Or, as they have recently done, they've made the choreographic elements more stringent. Two of these are relatively new. The first is the "Choreographic Character Step Sequence." I was under the apparently mistaken impression that the entire dance is a choreographic character sequence, with steps yes and spins and lifts. Bill Neal in another thread provided a helpful explanation: "[P]artners perform around the short axis in hold and/or non-touching: steps (some are done in-place), all sorts of different movements including sliding and turns, and mirroring choreography (each partner may cross the axis also)." The sliding movement is also a new choreographic feature this quad. They must be continuous, they may rotate, they can be in hold or not touching. Sliding Movement cannot finish as a stop on 2 knees or sitting/lying on the ice, otherwise it will be identified as a Fall/Illegal Element. I suspect they added this last requirement to prevent a rush of Torvill/Dean-esque dramatic death endings (ah! memories!).

A complete list of the FD requirements can be found here:
https://www.isu.org/docman-documents...tion-2148/file

My particular favorite is the costume requirements. Men are now allowed to wear tights; the "lady" (oh COME ON ISU, it's 2018; they're women) MUST wear a skirt. Sexist much? But here's the real laff riot: "Must be modest, dignified, not give the effect of excessive nudity and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing however may reflect the character of the chosen music." Oh reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally? I guess "garish and theatrical" are like definitions of pornography--exceedingly flexible when you want to issue a penalty. Just saying...

Ice Dance is a definite exception to the rule that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." On the contrary, a little knowledge makes ID so much more enjoyable to watch.

The NOSOVITSKIYs are kicking off the Free Dance.

So, to finally dispel the myth that they are a new partnership, time for a Throwback Thursday (OK, so it's Saturday, but let's not complicate matters).

Here is their Free Dance from the 2012 Dolgova Memorial:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2HTM_RSyZo

Given that they have been together so long, and have the female and male forms of the same surname, I am in no doubt that they are related. But, I still haven't managed to confirm whether or not Mikhail's DOB in their ISU Bio is correct, and hence whether or not they are indeed twins.

Mikhail seems to be an elusive character. Hardly anything in his section of the ISU Bio, and no social media accounts that I can find. (I found profiles for Mariia straight away).

He's wise! :agree:

Not going to be able to watch this today, as it is time for food now, and after that I am continuing to clear space on my hard drive so that I can tape the MotoGP and Formula 1 overnight.

Here is the livestream (starts in 3 minutes):

Ted's voice is so soothing. This is my first time watching the JGP, and I've become as much a fan of Ted as the competitors.

Music: "Notre Dame de Paris;" "Ave Maria"
Choreography by: Galit Chait Moracci
Costumes: Two-toned purple dress for her; purple shirt & black pants for him

Program Layout:

Twizzles - Level 4 for each. Not much coverage and a bit slow
Ch Spinning Movement -
Rotational Lift - exit a bit awkward; level 3
ML Step Seq - Edges could be deeper, really slowed the tempo to get those turns in. Level 2
SL Lift - she has nice stretch and backbend. Really nice. Level 3
NT St Seq - lovely exit out with him in spread eagle, she in Y position
Dance Spin
Choreo Slide - No fall this time!

It's a much better program than the RD. Better than last outing. Long time for judges to post that score...

next team from Estonia

Darja NETJAGA / Marko Jevgeni GAIDAJENKO
FD: "Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet" by Henry Mancini; Anonymous Theme Original Song "A Time For Us" (from "Romeo and Juliet") performed by Barratt Waugh; choreo by Julia Semjonova, Natalja Janovskaja

14 and 16 she in in white with an elaborate faux belt from embroidery
Just right for R&J

start with a one foot step . segue into what sounds like Requiem for a Dream

missed a hand grab

twizzles she missed up the first set. Spinning choreo move he accidentally picks her up

Rotational lift but he picks her up a second time after the main lift. Hope it is short enough to not mess things up

back into a Time for Us

Flip over into him doing a curve lift backward on one foot. Could be steadier over his skate. They got a zero for the curve lift, so the second pickup on the last lift probably counted as a second lift :(

Dance Spin
Tempo change but they don't increase the energy
Ro Lift with one arm Level 2

Big need to work those basics, as you can see by their levels. Stop Western Unionizing every element. Take some speed skating lessons.
