A Basic Introduction to the Free Dance...

People who don't watch ID or only watch ID occasionally (like, during the Olympics) tend to sniff at ID or dismiss it as "boring" or "easy". When I've asked a number of these people why they feel this way, two answers crop again and again. ID doesn't have big jumps (well no it doesn't; what it does have is the purest form of skating of all the disciplines) and they don't "get" how it is scored. What is it they're supposed to be looking at? This is probably why even the most casual of viewers love twizzles. They're both very difficult to do, and it's easy to differentiate a good set of twizzles (speed, flow, distance covered are all good) from a bad one (Whoops! They fell. Whoops! They missed catching the blade! Whoops! They lost their balance! Not so good.).

So here we are at the Free Dance. This being figure skating "free" is a relative term. Why yes, even here there are REQUIREMENTS GALORE:

Dance Lifts: Either one combo lift or two short lifts (if you include a choreographic lift, you can now have up to four lifts in a FD program)
Dance Spins: Either one dance spin or combination dance spin
Twizzles: One combination set
Step Sequences: Two, with one in hold and one not touching performed on one foot. Can be either straight line or curved.
Choreographic Elements: Two different elements from the following choices: Choreographic Lift, Choreographic Spinning Movement, Choreographic Twizzling Movement. Choreographic Sliding Movement, Choreographic Character Step Sequence (it's the choreographic equivalent of a Chinese menu!).

Periodically, the ISU goes into a tizzy about Ice Dancing, worried that it is becoming too "athletic" and "not dancey enough." So they do things like limit the number and timing of lifts. Or, as they have recently done, they've made the choreographic elements more stringent. Two of these are relatively new. The first is the "Choreographic Character Step Sequence." I was under the apparently mistaken impression that the entire dance is a choreographic character sequence, with steps yes and spins and lifts. Bill Neal in another thread provided a helpful explanation: "[P]artners perform around the short axis in hold and/or non-touching: steps (some are done in-place), all sorts of different movements including sliding and turns, and mirroring choreography (each partner may cross the axis also)." The sliding movement is also a new choreographic feature this quad. They must be continuous, they may rotate, they can be in hold or not touching. Sliding Movement cannot finish as a stop on 2 knees or sitting/lying on the ice, otherwise it will be identified as a Fall/Illegal Element. I suspect they added this last requirement to prevent a rush of Torvill/Dean-esque dramatic death endings (ah! memories!).

A complete list of the FD requirements can be found here:
https://www.isu.org/docman-documents...tion-2148/file

My particular favorite is the costume requirements. Men are now allowed to wear tights; the "lady" (oh COME ON ISU, it's 2018; they're women) MUST wear a skirt. Sexist much? But here's the real laff riot: "Must be modest, dignified, not give the effect of excessive nudity and appropriate for athletic competition – not garish or theatrical in design. Clothing however may reflect the character of the chosen music." Oh reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally? I guess "garish and theatrical" are like definitions of pornography--exceedingly flexible when you want to issue a penalty. Just saying...

Ice Dance is a definite exception to the rule that "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing." On the contrary, a little knowledge makes ID so much more enjoyable to watch.

I don't think Ted has twigged yet that Mikhail and Mariia are brother and sister, never mind that they are twins...

Really beautiful costumes.

I would never have thought about putting that combination of music together. It seemed so strange on paper. But it worked.

Such a shame about Mariia's fall at the end. Because it was going well up to that point.

I'm not sure whether she hurt herself, or whether she is just upset at making the mistake. But, the tears are coming from Mariia.

EDIT: From seeing the way Mariia is sitting while waiting for the results, I think it's because she's hurt herself. She keeps holding her right knee.

Mariia NOSOVITSKAYA / Mikhail NOSOVITSKIY
Country: Israel
Music: "Notre Dame de Paris;" "Ave Maria"
Choreography by: Galit Chait Moracci
Costumes: Two-toned purple dress for her; Purple shirt, black pants for him

Program Layout:

Twizzles - Level 4 for each. Nice. Just slow
Ch Spinning Movement
Rotational Lift - nice split position for her; level 4
In hold Step Seq
SL Lift - she has nice stretch
NT St Seq
Dance Spin
Choreo Slide - she fell. Ouch.

They actually do something impressive for their experience: they complete moves. Which bodes well for their future It's all nice but they're new and it shows. But there IS potential there. Don't cry darlin' - you did good. It was much better than the RD.

Score: 65.34

Country: China
Music: La La Land (soundtrack) by Justin Hurwitz
Choreography by: Xun Zheng
Costumes: Cute black dress with white collar and red belt and red tulle underskirt for her; black pants, tie and gloves with white shirt for him

Program Layout:

Curve lift - a bit shaky
NT Step Seq
Twizzles - nice unison; loevel 4 for both
In hold Step Seq
Ro Lift in split posiiton
Chor Char Step Seq - which actually showed some character
Dance Spin - level 4. Nice

Hmm, I missed two choreographic elements, The biggest thing I thought they need to work on is DIFFERENTIATING TEMPOS. La La has tons of tempo changes, and those tempo changes can really make this program sing. But they're skating it all at one very cautious level. And then they can work on polish. The program isn't light and airy and lord knows LLL needs to be.

Score: 70.71 (39.61 TES 31.10 PCS)

Oliwia BOROWSKA / Filip BOJANOWSKI
Country: Poland
Music: "Elena's Dance" by Michal Lorenc; "Mro Ho" by Michal Lorenc; "Chase, Drugs and Rifles"by Michal Lorenc
Choreography by: Jan Mosicki
Costumes: White First Communion dress with sheer polka dot overlay for her; black onesie with man clevage for him

Program Layout:

Chor Char Step Seq - they need to develop this more. It actually has potential to reveal character; it's not taped on
Twizzles - level 2 nice but need speed and ATTACK
NT St Seq - good, they're upping their pace to match the music. Do this more
Dance Spin with a nice entrance
Curve lift - level 2.
SL Lift - she has nice extension
Serp (?) ST Seq
Ch Spinning Move

They need to work on the basics but there are nice moments in there.

Score: 45.85

I don't know how people manage to do that. 2 snooker table, yes because there are gaps between shots. But 2 figure skating routines? No, because I wouldn't want to glance away during a routine.

As for the Poles, they were better than yesterday. But, I think their lack of speed is going to hamper them from climbing any.

And just as I write that, the scores come up and they indeed remain behind the two that were on before them.

Really wish we had a straight reverse SD results draw...

Ha ha to be honest I can barely keep my eyes on one skating routine at a time (unless I really love the skater/s and they grab my attention) so I have no business trying to watch two screens.

What version of Twist and Shout was that? It sort of sounded like The Beatles, but it was way too slow!

Never heard that version of "Twist And Shout" before. And I don't think that song suits being slown.

I really thought there was a fault with the CD player around 2/3 of the way through. Or that my other window of the Men's SP had started playing again. But, no. I think that mess of music was the way it was supposed to be. Such an awful edit.

Thank goodness the skating was better than the music.

"Gotta point the toe", is Ted channeling Dick Button right now ;)

Ha ha their coach's pants match Maksim's which I find strangely hilarious...
