I won't argue with today's results but sometimes I do miss the performances we would see in the past. Even Kurt was questioning the artistic choice of backloading the programs with jumps but acknowledging that is how the rules work so skaters of course would take advantage of that. It's the performances that make a skater memorable. I mean, it's still a sport but figure skating has that something extra that makes it so special. When every other girl does a Bielman or half the jumps are Tano then where are the highlights?
Anyways, enough grousing. Congrats to the medalists and to the final flight for mostly skating clean after that scary second-last flight.

Preach! I didn't want to respond to that and was trying to ignore it, but very well said. :thumbsup:My heart was with Evgenia for the win. I was practically holding my breath waiting to see if the judges were going to give it to her (and I thought they would). But I believe Alina is a worthy gold medalist. She played the game well and I cannot really protest it much, although I do believe this will be yet another Olympic ladies skating result that could be debated until the end of time.
For Alina she and her coaches played the numbers game and I as much as I prefer a balanced program, I cannot blame them for doing so. You want to score as many points as possible and not leave it up to your competitors to have a higher possible base if at all possible. Alina also does well with her choreography and does have grace. She has a nice program. She has nice spins.
Evgenia, to me, however, was better with her interpretation. She filled the arena and sold her program better. She emoted. I think she is a better jumper. Her overall skating is more appealing to me. I do think she should have higher PCS. But Alina got her with the jumps all in the second half.
I am so pleased that Katelyn Osmond kept it mostly together. She did a beautiful performance. Her jumps were better than all of the others to me and it was great to see. So pleased she was able to get the bronze. Canadian skating had a great Olympics.
Satoko and Kaori did a great job as well. I still overall love Japan as a skating nation the best. I don't favor Satoko like I did Mao or Shizuka, but she is a skater that I have become more impressed by. She is so elegant. It kind of reminds me of how I came to appreciate Akiko Suzuki by the time the Olympics rolled around in 2014. Kaori has been a delightful surprise this season. I look forward to watching her grow.
Carolina - it's been a long career and though she didn't skate her best tonight, she's come a long way. Early on in her career I wasn't really much of a fan. I thought she was a bit awkward on the ice, a young girl with long limbs who landed kind of stiff legged and didn't quite completely know how to best move for herself on the ice. But by the time 2010 rolled around, I saw a lovely artist on the ice. She really matured so much and it's been really rewarding to see her grow into herself and become one of the premier artists of her era in the sport. She is one of my favorites now and I will miss her when she is gone. Still glad she got her Olympic medal in 2014.

I didn't say Med didn't have PCS inflation (as do other skaters, since the whole PCS is broken anyway) but we haven't seen inflation like this (over just one season) ever. It's... weird? Especially in the first senior year (while still skating vaguely junior-ish). Med was beating a clean Alina before her injury, with a solid PCS cushion. But even if you don't compare countrymen, Alina (and Med's) PCS versus everyone else comparatively is weird.
I think PCS kinda went out the window though.

Well, I don't think so. Alina's coach Eteri didn't even hug her, was hugging Evgenia in the corner. And Kaetlyn's coach hugged her. I don't think Eteri is evil like some comments are suggesting, and it's a human reaction to prefer one student to the next. But I feel bad for Alina, she looked so alone and didn't have anyone to celebrate her OLYMPIC GOLD medal with. She was crying by herself when she found out, stark contrast to Yuzuru crying and Brian coming to hug him AND Javi, Aliona crying and having her coaches come to her, and Tessa and Scott having their coaches come see them. I wish Alina were older so she could handle it better, this is a lot for a 15 year old and while she has great respect for Evgenia, it must suck to realize and while you won, most people (the Russian commentators) were still talking about how Evgenia should have won.
I realized how much the overabundance of tanos annoys me about halfway through Sotskova's program.

That is categorically false.
Both Med and Zagitova went to Kaetlyn first and hugged her before getting on the platform.

Kurt wouldn't stop talking about it. When he pointed out that most of the women didn't have the strength to hold the arm straight and still and made it flop around I suddenly noticed it myself and it was distracting. At one point he joked about confronting Boitano later to "thank" him for changing the sport in this way.

In some sick twist of fate, it almost seems karmic as Yuna lost her rightful gold to a Russian skater last time. While Russia slayed this event, it wasn't the result the majority may have wanted.

Evgenia deserved to win fair and square with a HUGE PCS gap over Zagitova (something like 10 points) in any reasonable world that takes SS, PE and IN seriously into account. But I won't discuss it here: I'll just leave it here, and then go on to say that it was a beautiful competition and that I enjoyed it very much

)I must say, after the intensity of the Sochi ladies' free skate, this was much better on my nerves!
I'm sad for Evgenia, respectful of Alina's achievement, and happy for Kaetlyn. I'm feel for Satoko for doing so well, but it still wasn't enough.

That wasn't right either. And I have been one of the people criticizing Zhenya in the past. She never should have received crazy high PCS over Kaetlyn and some of the others. But I found Zhenya improved this evening. Not crazy improved but perhaps just slightly higher than Kaetlyn this time with the edge on TES as well (Kaetlyn had a step out). But Alina should be nowhere near either one (or Carolina and Satoko for that matter).

When they gave Osmond 152, I thought they had forsworn the punishment for edge violation for ALL skaters to make room for Medvedeva, who in fact turned out to be the only one let off. I guess they really wanted to give her the gold medal.

Medvedeva has her own style. Has very good SS and interpretation. There are of course people that will deny her that. I suppose if one has a certain agenda then facts go out of the window. I wasn't fan of the miming but her LP last year showed what an exceptional interpreter she really is.

Because, as said, there's really no difference between 9th and 5th. Adam was making top ten at best but he's probably been the biggest name in the US at these Olympics. I'm just saying this could've been played better. Especially since FS is going down in the US.
I really have no preference which who went, but with the way it played out... well...

Med is the only skater to me who makes the ice look like a sidewalk, meaning she is so secure in the placement of her feet at all times she looks stable.
Well you never know. I would expect at least one US Figure Skating Coach to figure out to write programs to game the scoring system like the Russians did - and find a skater strong enough to pull it off. I would also expect Gabby Daleman to go in that direction... Gabby has to in 2022, it's her last shot at individual Olympic podium.
