The two local girls are opening and closing the evening--rough draw for both Polina and Karen, but should help keep the crowd in their seats. Good luck to both. (And the visitors as well.)

Sometimes the big names being spread out among multiple groups can work out better for the skaters mentally since they don't risk having to come out and skate after someone who just got a standing ovation and high score, it's also harder to draw direct comparisons when they are skating further apart (for example Ashley's jumps versus Bradie's or Ashley's presentation versus Mirai's).

On the downside it kinda sucks for those who are skating really early like Polina, because you don't know how that will compare to what everyone else is going to do and you might end up underscored unless you are Evgenia or Carolina Kostner.

Curious why you are saying this.
While I am not the most optimistic of strong showings by the Senior ladies, I am not this pessimistic.
I'm only saying that if all ladies capable of scoring above 60 do, except that one of the three favorites misses their combination and scores in the 50 range, that favorite could wind up as low as 10th. Of course, since very few ladies have the potential of scoring more than 65-67, a score in the 50s won't put anyone that far behind for the LP, particularly given the poor consistency of our current crop of ladies. For that reason, we could also see somebody in 10th, 9th, 8th after the SP wind up on the podium or potentially even win this year.

How is it a mess? The order in which the skaters perform their sp? Like, the Final group isn’t made up of all the big names?

I don't know if I'd call it a mess but it's certainly unfortunate for Polina. Judges have to keep their scores reserved when they have so many medal contenders, including the defending champion 21 skaters away. Polina needs a repeat of her 2016 SP to keep herself in contention. Unless Bradie has a meltdown, I see her winning the free program and the rest of field needs to beat her in the short to have a chance at winning.

I'm disappointed for Courtney, as I hoped she'd be lucky and get drawn to skate later in the program. She is really going to have to skate well to remain in contention.

How is Vivian Le looking?? She was a such a promising junior and then she kind of faded for a while. Is she back in contention?

The new judging system was supposed to prevent the judges from having to reserve their marks, though. Not like the stuffy USFSA judges would know that. They still seem to think it's the 6.0 system.

Holy crap this draw is a mess.

I like the draw. It offers the prospect of early skaters nailing their programs and really cranking the pressure on the last group.

I am really looking forward to seeing the judging bias if later favorites fail to deliver.

How has Courtney been looking in practice? Has she been landing her 3-3?

Can someone enlighten me on the different in times from the official start time (9:30pm) and the 11pm start time on NBC? [im on the east coast]. I was planning to watch it on my TV but I realized NBC starts an hour and a half later and is only 2 hours? Does that sound about right or are they going to cut a lot of skaters out of the broadcast? It says Live coverage, but I guess not?

Unless they are only airing the final groups live, then this will have to be a recap show. But there are good skaters in the early groups. This isn’t a seeded event so that the cream is only in the final groups.

Maybe we’ll get the final groups live with the best of the early groups during the gap between last two groups.

In that case, is there anywhere that’s streaming the full skate besides ice network?
I hate when any national competition happens because NBC gets it instead of Olympic channel or NBCSN and they shred it apart with a million commercials and skip tons of skaters

How many spots does the US have for the Olympics?

I want Braddie Tennel on the team, she's the only legitimate skater out there in the US. Then I want Mirai for sentimental reasons.
