I'm still rooting for Erokhov to medal at RusNats for maximum chaos! :cheer2:
I know he didn’t do well in Warsaw, and I am kinda afraid to ask… did he got the TES? Ignatov actually looks more solid now than everyone particulary in the all important short program 🤷‍♀️ I think at this point they’ve all burned it at least once except for him. But chances are RusFed will look over his head and as far afield as they have to; there are literally has to be no one else before they pick Ignatov. Honestly, anyone with decent PCSs might be better off with triple-triple combo if quad combo doesn’t pan out as first jump.

He got TES minimums for Europeans and the Olympics and for Worlds SP. But in the purest tradition of Russian men, he managed to miss Worlds FS minimums by 0.47 points. Ah well, I'm happy to continue watching him at the local Russian events as long as he stays healthy and injury-free. 🙏 And who knows, maybe there'll really be an upset at RusNats. That's what makes the Russian men so interesting after all, literally anyone of the top 18 could medal.

Oh, no… that’s 🤦‍♀️ about Erokhov. It’s his only challenger too. 😢

I liked Kovtun's comments on the Russian men's SP. Kind, tactful and to the point. Kovtun got so much flack back in the day for being lazy and a spoiled brat, but he actually appears to be a nice person who doesn't bash other skaters and certainly a much better commentator than Yagudin (which unfortunately means he doesn't get invited any more).

Maybe I’m naive, but I don’t think Ignatov would be treated like he was last year with RusFed playing musical chairs with deciding on who would go to Worlds alongside Kolyada despite his silver medal at RusNats. The situation is different. There’s three men, not two and you can’t lose a spot at the Olympics.

Ignatov has what? Two fourth places? The only two Russian men that can top that will be skating tomorrow and they both did badly in the SP. The only thing hurting Ignatov is his exhaustion at the end of every skate. It’s hurting his PCS as the last thing the judges will remember is his barely being able to complete an already ugly spin at the end of a program. He has to stop limping across the finish line!

He won’t be given any favors at RusNats, but I also don’t think he’ll get passed over if he’s on the podium, either. If you think about the scoring potential, there’s really not a big difference between him and Samarin, Kondratiuk, and Semenenko. So why think too hard if he beats all of them at Nationals?

As I understand, Ignatov is in a bit of a bind. Heavier off-ice training for stamina makes his past injuries flare up. Russian men are often hampered by their health at least as much as by their heads.

Sigh, "men are going to rob out girls of the gold medal!" is already starting up in the women's thread. I honestly wish none had to skate in the team event. Send Trusova or whoever.
I doubt very much they're skating just to have a chance to be this only man who will be selected for the team event to give medals to other skaters (It doesn't matter how good the man will skate at the team event, he won't receive any credit in the media. But if he isn't good...). People in Russian chats change "AN OLYMPIC HOPE" after every skate. Not even after a competition, after a skate.
Day 1: "Mozalev should switch coaches etc."
Day 2: "Look at him! He's an Olympic medal contender!!!"
People often write disgusting comments under bad skates. Just disgusting. Someone even sends them to the skaters (Aliev posted a screenshot of his Direct in his IG stories after the RFC). And now they wonder, 'Why does Dima need a psychologist?'. Really, why?

Also, after every good skate: "why can't he skate like this every time?" Because most of them are skating at the limit of their capability. They don't feel they have the option of going for more manageable content, and when they have to simplify due to health/form, they get bashed for it. Yagudin is obsessed with "not lowering the bar", which is something he was taught by TAT (no surprise). Except Yagudin didn't jump 4Lz/4F/4Lo that he demands the guys always do if they have ever tried it regardless of their current ability to produce one.

The problem is that it’s visible and it hampers him more than another guy who might fall and might not. He consistently puts out about 30 to 60 seconds of Makar Must Suffer performance that tortures him, annoys the audience and befuddles the judges. Not once he had an energy filled free. He is absolutely better this year, and if he does do RusNats well, gosh, I sure hope they will just throw their arms up and say, Well, that’s the best we have.

Kolyada, Semenenko (or whichever one of the 18 yo group happens to be in best shape in January) and Ignatov are a solid team to me, but what do I know?

I dunno. I am here still waiting patiently for Mozalev to happen in seniors.

That's just mean! Absolutely no-one goes to the Olympics aiming to lose. Whoever's picked will certainly do his best and I find it hard to believe that with such strong skaters in the other three disciplines that a bad skate...unless it's truly horrible will cause Russia to lose the gold...and even if it is, that's the nature of team events. But to suggest that they are solely responsible or aren't doing the best they can is crappy.

And the sort of thing I expect from that thread TBH.

Realistically, the reason that the Russian men are less consistent than the women is because they are performing harder content. Only Sasha attempts content similar to the men in the LP at times, and she isn't a model of consistency either. None of women are doing 2 quads plus a 3A in the SP. Mozalev was very consistent as a junior when he couldn't do quads in the SP and he did only one or two quads in the FS.

The Russian press makes it so hard for the Russian men. Going for the easier but cleaner route would probably result in higher scores and more consistency for the Russian men ( think Jason and Deniss or even a one quad SP and 2 quad plus 2 3A FS) but the Russian press often implies that men who don't land
enough quads aren't " masculine" enough so the men attempt content that they can't consistently land and get lower scores than they would with "easier" cleaner more balanced programs. I was happy to see Aliev go for easier content last GP. Hopefully, the other men also ignore the negatively and go for the content that results in the best scores.

I guess people just fail to realize that pretty much all the guys struggle. And the first moment a new kid with wonder quads appear, he is the new hope, only for it to be dashed because it’s just that hard to manage this much quad content and stay healthy. I don’t know if the men in general will push through and eventually become dominant as the ladies or the Fed will have to make some introspection in order to produce athletes that will be able to withstand the toll of current standards.

The Fed should also stop feeding egos and actually foster an environment where the skaters can grow. Because so far, no coach is having success in boys according to the demands of the current era. Not even the biggest names.

Samarin’s content was also reduced in his last stage, so he doesn’t have to try two 4Lz in one program. Which imo did result in better performance and was rewarded. It gives me hope that they are adapting to the demands of modernity. Plus, in the next junior tier they have juniors with more emphasis on skating skills and performance than on ‘senior’ quads.

Oh, no. :frown: Despicable. But Dimitri has shown improvement the last competition.

True. And, while I don't understand Samarin's program at all, it resulted in good scores in the LP, better ice coverage, and great spins. I do hope you are right and the coaches are realizing BV isn't the only thing that matters.
