Yes, he does need to stabilise that second quad, I don't think the Fed is currently feeling terribly generous towards guys with 1.5 quads. And of course there are also juniors who will want their slice of the pie.
I'm sure this particular thing didn't slip past Mozalev & Co. For his sake, I hope they are not going to try to take mass off of him to get him to jump, because he looks muscular and relatively well-fed at least.

But they are not exactly generous to Ignatov either, who managed to hang in there for a few months as a 3-quad guy...

I think they have no faith in Ignatov because of the combination of size and what appears to be intractable stamina issues. It's like they are almost baffled by why he's still skating and not taking the hint.

I know… he is an oddball.

I'm afraid he won't have the strength to jump if they will try to make him lose weight and make him eat less... Remember the beginning of the season? He was quite slim and was under-rotating his jumps frequently. He still has ur problems but to a lesser degree... I'm not sure if making him skinnier will help the situation or make it worse.

Semenenko is going to Olympics instead of Kolyada.

Edit: saw it was COVID. But the feeling is the same.

The injury definitely was not so minor as they said. I am a big fan, but also am strangely at peace with this decision. I’d rather him not go through anything like he’s been through four years ago.

Much luck to the other guys, and may they be able to show their best!

Oh, gosh...

My guess is that his body's reaction to puberty might be that he is packing on muscular mass more so than height. It's a fortunate build, but just like Vasiljievs he needs time to figure out what to do with all that goodness. Fingers crossed? Personally, to me, the idea of cannibalizing on the muscular mass in favor of thinness under huge athletic loads that draw on stamina, cardio endurance, strength and explosive power is something abhorrent.

Unfortunately, we are in for another round of Mozalenko, and whoever loses will be replaced by Kolyada at WC, I guess.

But, that leaves Kondratyuk as Russian leading man to skate team event.

I’m about to sound the hell off. Has RusFed lost their damn minds? They cannot be serious with this BS. They’re making USFed look utterly brilliant right now. This pisses me off to no end. What’s the reason for this utter nonsense?

Edit: Oh. I was so peeved I didn’t read anything else. Now I’m just sad. UGH.

Kolyada is Covid positive. Semenenko is first alternative. There is nothing else they could do and it will probably have a devastating impact on the whole team, because Mozalev and Semenenko are like matter and antimatter, they annihilate, and they need all 3 in top 10 for best possible outcome. I am terrified for one of Mozalenko ending up buried by this Olympics.

I hate to bring up this conversation again, but NOW what are they going to do about the Team Event? Does Mark do both programs? That seems like a lot of pressure on a newbie.

Yes, that's the only option now. In Valieva's immortal words, Mark will survive. He's going to win Olympic silver, as a minimum.

I'd put Mark in both segments. He seems to have a good head on his shoulders and has been the most consistent Russian man so far. He just needs to place in the top three in both the short and long and he'll be fine.

Sometimes in a difficult situation a person succeeds in something that does not work out while he is calm. So it is possible that this disaster will be an unexpected chance for someone.
In my view, the best possible outcome in the way the last two years went, pretty much devastating for the two upper age tiers of the male skaters in Russia, is slow and steady, because if they have to start rebuilding with 18 yo's, I hope all the three guys perform well, instead of ups and downs. Unfortunately, all three of them are actively growing, so it only increases the impression of instability. Gosh....

I don't have such fears for Mozalenko. This is a golden opportunity for Mozalev as he has the highest scoring potential of the three men. It's going to be such a statement if he finishes as the top Russian man. I just hope he plays it smart in the SP because not making the free skate will also be a statement. Mozalev isn't a nervy skater, though. His issues are technical content that he can't quite handle, not nerves. I'm taking Kondratiuk's European scores with a huge barrel of salt so I'm going to say all three men are good for a 250-260. Such scores will probably fall right outside the top ten, but those numbers aren't bad at all. These guys aren't Chen and Hanyu, in which such a score means they bombed. It's going to be hard for all three men to fall in the top 10, but it's not impossible. Realistically, they're going to fall behind all three Japanese men and probably all three American men, as well. At least two. That's five spots right there. The real competition is from the handful of guys that can score the same: guys like Grassl, Messing, Cha, et al. Semenenko is more nervy than Mozalev is, but he held himself up very well at Worlds last year and he doesn't implode . He's just messy. His problem may be that he cannot handle being in first place going into the free, but that won't be the case at the Olympics. They'll be fine.

Kondratiuk is the skater most likely to be buried by these Olympics, not Mozalenko. They're much more pressure on him now as it's practically a certainty that he'll skate both programs in the team event now and I'm worried about his scores. The Olympics aint Europeans and he's not Kolyada. In the team event, he's going head-to-head with certain skaters and I'm having a hard time imagining him outscoring at least 4 men if they're clean/cleanish, even if he's also clean. Maybe even 5. Hopefully, he just skates clean and if others outscore him, well, I think he'll be fine. There's a big difference between placing 4th in the SP because you bombed and placing 4th because you did well, but others were just better.

I agree that their real scoring potential is 250-260, if their PCSs are favorable and they are passing with one-two mistakes, but I am terrified of Mozalev not making free skate, and, to a lesser degree, of him scoring third out of the three, with his URs or 4S troubles. Mozalenko both got psyched out in Euros. My mom has this motherhood and apple pie theory that since both made it in, they will bond and perform better this time. Me, I am hitting the ceiling with worry.

The worst outcome for any of them would be not making the FS, but also, figuring out of top 10 is not a good look either. I think if they perform close to what they did in Tallinn they will even get to reach the final warm up group, but it’s all up in the air. They’ll not get PCS bonus at the Olympics, that’s for sure.

And now to wonder who will become the scapegoat this time. Hopefully none of them!
