2024-25 US Women's Figure Skating

Lindsay hasn't competed internationally since mid November. Might she simply be changing federations? Is she potentially eligible to represent somewhere else?
Her mom is from the Dominican Republic, so I don’t know if that’s a possibility. She might be injured or not planning to compete next season.

very sad if Lindsey is retiring. i have never been the biggest fan of her skating but there was no denying her talent. she went through a rough patch last season and i honestly wish she would have changed coaches, it might have changed everything for her. maybe she just needs some time away, which is not a negative thing. i wish her the best whatever she does.

on a related note, i've been thinking about who might retire after the olympic season next year. i could see Bradie, Amber, Starr and Ting retiring. i'm not sure if any of them have said anything on the matter. i could see Alysa actually retiring, but i hope not as i think she has so much more to give to skating and is such an excellent role model. but i hope she does what makes her happy at the end of the day. i can't see Isabeau and Sarah not sticking around for another quad. has anyone heard anything on Ava? i hope she is doing well and makes a comeback, she could be a top US woman the next quad.

I haven’t heard anything about Ava, but the others you mentioned could well retire after next season (besides Sarah and Isabeau). Alysa could stick around given her age, even if she medals at the Olympics. She does have a lot to offer. 😊

I am so sad that Lindsay might be retiring. I always thought she had soo much potential, and she was my favourite US skater.
She HAD tons of potential. People were predicting her for the 2022 Olympics. For whatever reasons, whether injury burnout loss of Fed support poor team leadership she just never got to that next level. It has been painful to watch her the last couple of years. She seemed in tears everytime she took the ice. Some seem to love to put down the Russian system, but always seem to overlook the USFS system. I felt that she was done dirty at Nats this year. She wasn't great, but she should have been several places higher (maybe). USFS churns them out and spits them out too. Lindsay is a casualty of this. I can only surmise and hope that Lindsay will find an outlet for her to be super successful, because the last few years she looked like she was through with skating and didn't care anymore. Pity.

Very sad to see Lindsay retire, but not surprised after this year's nationals.

In sports in general, when a coach (and/)or federation aren't in your corner, it wears on your confidence and you are training not from zero, but from a negative just getting to a positive before you even hit the ice. It doesn't even mean uber-stanning a skater by giving them the generous benefit of a doubt (when injured and still getting assignments, for example). It means not getting in a skating career's way by dropping the skater several placements, affecting funding, or giving that skater harsher treatment than other skaters in the same circle.

This sport is insanely expensive at the junior/senior international level and there are few seasons to make a mark. If Lindsay's off to college, that's a great move. Many skaters with huge talent retire to college earlier than they should. There's only room at the top for so many - and coaches, judges, feds all have their preferences. Ice dance has many females of exceptional talent that retired before being able to truly make a mark in juniors or seniors due to the lack of partners and logjam that has been senior ice dance with established partnerships continuing on or returning to the sport.

Hope she knows that her talent was recognized and celebrated by the skating public.

Russia actually has a great group of senior women around Lindsay's age who don't seem to have plans to retire soon: Anna Frolova, Sofia Muravieva, Ksenia Gushchina, and Kseniia Sinitsyna, among the better known ones. All would be competitive for top prizes if performing internationally right now. All are supported by the Russian federation.

When the age change was introduced, people assumed it would be an issue for Russia. Russian officials, meanwhile, said they were confident they could adapt. It seems they were right to some extent; yes, there are still girls who peak and bow out earlier, but there are plenty of strong women who make it through to adulthood. (Liza Tuktamysheva was a great role model for them.)

It's really countries like the U.S. – who, ironically, seemed to support the age change – that seem like they're going to be most hurt by it. The sport is simply too expensive in the U.S., and the opportunity cost of skipping university is too high, for the country to support more than a tiny handful of top senior women. (I'm talking about women who are actually competitive for significant international prizes, so not the Sonja Hilmers of the world, no disrespect to them.)

And who even knows how much longer those top few women will be around. Is Isabeau really going to last that much longer, especially seeing that she's already missing significant time at a young age? Will Alysa return to retirement after cashing in on another Olympics? Does Amber, at 25, have enough gas in the tank to continue beyond this cycle? Sarah is planning to attend American University starting this or next year, how much longer will she be fully committed to competing, especially when assignments she arguably earned, like Worlds, are being given to other skaters? Similarly, Elyce is the daughter of a professor and definitely plans to attend university at a normal age. Ava has vanished. I could go on.

And the fact that USFS plays favorites, pushing skaters like Lindsay out of the sport, only makes things worse for them. It wouldn't surprise me if Bradie is next to bow out...she's made a truly impressive comeback, but you would be forgiven for forgetting she exists given how all-in USFS is with Alysa, Isabeau, and Amber, despite the fact that Bradie's average international score this past season was right there with the three of them.

I also think that around 17-18 years, many women go through body changes and you have to adapt the technique to that. Which is hard work of course. Remember Tuktamysheva won worlds when she had just turned 18, after that it took a few years for her to really be in contention again.

Maybe that was it in Lindsay's case. She had a rough last season, maybe it was all just growing pains..

Perhaps you are right. New jumping coach might have helped; Julia Lautowa seems to do well with juniors judging by her success with Lindsay as a Junior and currently her own daughter Skylar approaching Junior status now. Would be an interesting challenge should Lindsey decide to follow that path. But, I also pray, for her growth and development, she attends college. It would stabilize and broaden her horizon like nothing else.

I think Isabeau is basically skating on fumes at this point. Her technique is pretty awful to watch, though she is a gorgeous skater. I think she's going to wing it to the Olympics and be done with the sport after this season. But Alysa isn't really rotating her jumps, as much as I admire her and her skating, and Amber.... She's NicoleBobek2.0. You'd have to have a screw loose to be a fan, or at least, a fan who expects results.

And yes, this sport is so incredibly expensive. Unreal. A good friend has her daughter in Intermediate and is paying like $40K. She's good, picture perfect, except she's not going anywhere. I'm like, are you at least saving for college? It's all kind of depressing.

You'd have to have a screw loose to be a fan of Amber?? What an absolute horrible take. Actually all your views are disgusting to the women. What a hateful person you are.
The post could have been worded better, but what she said about Isabeau and Alysa is pretty accurate if you just consider the gist. Other people have made the same points in the past. Isabeau does have poor technique on jumps, despite otherwise being a lovely skater, and she does generally seem to be struggling the past eighteen months or so. If she makes it to the Olympics, I wouldn't be at all surprised if she retires from competitive skating afterwards. Alysa has had an amazing comeback, but she does have a tendency to underrotate jumps and is one of the skaters with whom judges tend to turn a blind eye to that. I don't think it is "disgusting to the women" to acknowledge these things.

Does anyone have a link to that NBC event that the Blades and Banter podcast mentioned on their latest episode? Alysa, Isabeau, and Amber were invited, so we know who the usfsa wants on the olympic team.

And does anyone have a link to Alysa's interview with that football player?

I'm assuming that's all the promo stuff they did since I don't listen to a lot of podcasts. There are a bunch of behind the scenes, and other photos on Instagram, but more of that stuff that they filmed will get released as the season starts.
