2024 Skate Canada Women's Short Program

OK... surprising that people would make it for dinner time pairs, and leave after, when Kaori Sakamoto, who is a major attraction wherever she competes, is about to skate.
moonvine commented that it looked really cold at the rink so maybe people were cold? Anyway for those who did stay, I thought Kaori's performance was worth the wait!

Looking forward to the RD! :)

ETA I blame @TallyT for confusing me saying the pairs were better attended, I assumed they were second but they were first. I'd be surprised that fans watched pairs and skipped Kaori. Very surprised.
Geez, and here I was answering someone else's post about the depressingly low attendance (even worse than SKAM which was nothing to write home about :() with what I saw and an theory with at least a slightly positive spin on it... remind me not to look for a sliver of sunny side again

I simply go by what I saw with mine own eyes. folks. The audience for pairs was low (the one side was near empty both times and it's not a big rink) but clearly a bit bigger than for the women which yes, surprised me as even in these lean times women are supposed to be more popular than pairs. And I just checked some of the men and ID (I liked Piper and Paul especially) and they were slim pickings too.

I wasn't having a go at the Canadians theorising that those who bought tickets were probably more interested in their own possible medallists! During the Mao/Yuzu/Shoma heyday, the Japanese who flew to Canada and elsewhere appreciated and cheered for all skaters, they still didn't always go to the competitions, even nearby, where they weren't, or stay for the disciplines they weren't into. It's human nature to pick and choose what you spend time on.

I love Kaori, I really do but sadly even with her 3 OGMs she's not. I was more (but not very) surprised that US fans of Alysa (first skate in three years and it was wonderful even if the costume wasn't) and Malinin didn't make the trip.

well the attendance is better on saturday so let's just say that friday night isn't good... but also, the first event today, ice dance was not well attended... and that's where Canada will most likely pick up the most medals.

i was not really blaming you by the way. I got confused by your post, thinking pairs were second BUT I am the only one responsible for not checking my facts LOL.

Ooops, please see how much I love Kaori  - handing her all that Olympic gold, Make that 3 Worlds...

I like Chris.
Me too. He doesn't talk as much as some other commentators and doesn't seem as biased as Ted is sometimes (and although not the greatest at pronunciation, he doesn't mangle simple non-Anglo names as badly as Ted). And an English accent is just so much easier on the ears than North American (sorry everyone, I'm biased).

Just caught up on replay. Kaori and Alysa were solid - think Kaori will mature into the Tango programme, but she's not quite there yet. Alysa was charming and joyful, and seemed to be enjoying herself, which is lovely to see after all that she's gone through. Gutted for Rino - she is such a beautiful skater, so light and airy. Not sure what happened with the double axel. Hana - the music and costume are interesting, but I wonder if powerful, intense music is her thing. Pleased to see Madi putting in a solid performance. Kimmy Repond is gorgeous to watch, but not my cup of tea - her long limbs are a bit distracting and flaily for me.

Me three!

I love this song. Wasn't familiar with it nor the singer but it obviously speaks to Alysa. Just felt every note.
Definitely check out the album (Bewitched by Laufey) it’s one of my favorites from last year! I think Alysa does a wonderful job in her SP.
