2024 Worlds: General Info and Pre-game chat

Israel. I heard we did well in juniors ice dance, had a silver medal and congratulations for the pair who did it was all over our domestic skating/sports news. Hopefully our participant for the ladies events has a great skate! :)
The best of luck for Mariia Seniuk!

Just days ago, I finally watched Junior Worlds Women Free Skate and noticed an aspiring junior skater Sophia Shifrin who represented Israel. With her, I think Women category has also good future prospects for your country.

Thank you so much ❤️

I know Israel as a skating federation is not even close to be amongst favorites for any elite world skating competition, but I do know skaters are working very hard and practicing their best to do well and have a great skate. YES, Sophia Shifrin works hard, does her best, again, perhaps not amongst the favorites and of course I am very biased, I think she is lovely and love watching her skate, looking forward to a great career for her.
We're not known for having produced great skaters (we did and do produce great rhytmic gymnasts and martial arts athletes) but lately I am seeing more and more positive results in skating competitions and being so far away, training figure skating here in Japan, I can say I can't help being very happy :)

First of all, I'm hoping for Shoma and Kaori to get their third world titles! I also really want Mone to medal.

I hope that Piper and Paul can win the title in front of their home crowd, because they deserve it so much.

As for our Estonian skaters, I hope that Aleksandr Selevko finishes in the top 10, Niina Petrõkina puts together two strong performances and Nataly Langerbaur qualifies for the free skate at her Worlds debut!

I'm also excited to see Livia Kaiser skate again after doing so well at the Euros!

I know that the men's category is going to be especially competitive, so I just wish everyone to do well and have an exciting event!

Just jumping on this to ask something.

As you may know, I have adopted a family of Israeli skaters (Liza and Katya Gervits, and their Mum, Lubov Yanpolsky), and so have started keeping an eye on the domestic competitions in Israel.

The third round of the Cup Of Israel was being held at the same time as Junior Worlds, and I spotted that a Maria Shifrin was 2nd in the Cubs competition. My initial thought was that she might be Sophia's sister, but they are listed for clubs in different places (Maria for a club in Kfar Saba, and Sophia for a club in Holon). So, do you know if they are related in some way?

I'm just curious. It's always fascinating seeing skaters from the same family.

I am waiting for it like hell.

I've been competing in another winter sport myself, volunteered at dozens of sport events, so to me any championship is a special time. But especially, when it comes to figure skating - the sport I love more than anything else.

Frankly, I am bit jealous of those who live in Montréal^^ My own domestic competition will happen only in 2027 when half of my favorites will probably retire. And another half lives on other continents, so there will be no way I am gonna see them compete in my home city that year. But that's life 🤷‍♂️

This year, I am looking forward to seeing... everyone. Really, I think this year there are so many intersting skaters and programs in all disciplines that I will be enjoying watching it from the very first group. I don't even have a wish list for podiums - may the best one win.

P.S.: but we're all humans, so I will be still a bit disappointed if Malinin wins over Uno and Kagiyama or if Guignard/Fabbri make it over Chock/Bates and Gilles/Poirier.

My serious hope is Kagiyama does a clean skate, and ends up winning. It's hard against ilias sheer tech content, but not impossible (especially if Kagiyama is rewarded correctly vs malinin for his skating skills)

In pairs I need Italians to skate clean and secure three spots for next year (which they should do barring disaster). I was dissapointed in third italian team not getting to go.
Other than that in pairs it's still ab emerging field, so open to adopting favourite pairs teams.

I have no hopes for ice dance, as I'm pretty sure results have already been decided and will remain same as GPF (although I'd very much like Piper and Paul & Charlene and Marco to place ahead of Chock/Bates). I'd also like Ignateva/Szemko redemption from europeans with two strong skates here!
I think Fear/Gibson probably have a good hold on 4th place, but there are a number of teams who can take 5th and 6th, so it'll be an interesting battle to fill out the top group of ice dancers. And a lot can happen on the day.

In terms of Women, I would like to see Amber Glenn pull everything together and do a clean free skate. Results wise, I'm generally pretty uninvested.

No, I didn't know! Nice to meet you :) I'm not sure I understand. You adopted these kids but you mention the mother... so she also lives with you? Sorry!

Interesting. I just researched in Hebrew, in google, and found this
https://figureskating.oneice.co.il/כמה-נחת-כמה-תוצאות-היום-הראשון-באליפו/ (sorry, it's in Hebrew and it's not pasting here with the Hebrew characters), here it shows she finished 4th place in Cubs, result of 2022

Shifrin is not such uncommon family name. I have no idea if they are from the same immediate family. Israel not a big country with so many people, we joke we are just one big family. Not uncommon to find someone with an exact same family name as yours and you didn't know this person, but you immediately gain another relative 😂
It's happened with me too, I say my last name, someone says "ahh you'related to the "xxxx" who run the "xxxx" shop om "xxxx" city?", you say no, but then I go there and they're my new relatives. Or if you're adult, then maybe they say to you "ahhh, I went to the army with a "xxx" in unit "xx", do you know him/her?" There's always someone who went to the army together with someone with your same family name.

I can message someone at home and ask to investigate if they're sisters, cousins or just someone with the same family name!

I have mixed feelings about Worlds this year. Like last year things started off so good for the CANs but as the season progressed (last year and this year) they have dropped off a bit while skaters from other countries seem to come on stronger at worlds. Lia and Trennt beat the world bronze medalist as a GP yet only place 5th at 4CC. Deanna and Max win 4CC but with their lowest score of the season. Our 3 Dance teams will be at a huge disadvantage because of the Judging Panel for Dance. Maddy has shown some strong skates but has not been able to put a short and free together at the same event. And Wesley is just too new and I think the pressure will get to him. After all he was in 2nd place after the short at 2 JWC but dropped out of the medals. Hate for Worlds to be in Canada and have us come away with no medals.

Anyway, I'm looking forwards to it very much! I think it will be very exciting and we will get to see lots of interesting programs. From the first look it seems the times are not as bad as expected, only men's free 😭 will be difficult.
Pairs, my least favourite discipline now, is the most interesting in terms of results I think - anything could happen.

There's a lot I hope for, but mostly I will just enjoy the show and try to get some family members to watch with me.

No, I didn't know!

Don't worry, I knew it was a long shot asking. It isn't that long since Sophia switched to representing Israel, and you are a bit far away now to hear all the ins and outs of who is related to who.

Sorry for confusing you. "Adopting" is the terminology that is used on Golden Skate for when you start Fan Fest threads for skaters. (I really should get into the habit of putting it into inverted commas, but I never think of it when I am writing posts). I have never even spoken to any members of the Gervits family.

If you are interested, here is their Fan Fest thread:

But, they are a very interesting family. Lubov is an Adult Skater (although she posted a video on Instagram in November of herself doing some elements, and said that she hadn't been on the ice for 2 years, but after an hour it had all came back to her), while Liza competes at Senior level and Katya at Junior level. All three of them are also very talented pianists, and there are lots of videos on YouTube of them playing both on their own, and in various combinations.

I don't know if Lubov's husband (the girls' Dad) is also a musician or skater. I just know his name and job.

Thank you very much for researching. With not speaking Hebrew, I wouldn't have been able to find out that much (hey, it was only when I found out the Greek transliteration of the name for one of my "kids" that represents Cyprus recently that I was able to find a whole pile of articles about her that were in Greek).

I would never have realised that Shifrin was a common surname. The only other person I have come across with that surname (albeit with a slightly different transliteration) is American Alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin. So, I have learnt something interesting today from you.

And I can relate to what you say about people asking if you are related to somebody. Or even, when they hear where you are from, if you know somebody from a totally different part of the country. For goodness sake, there are lots of people in my own hometown that I don't know, never mind further away!

If you don't mind, and if it's no bother to you otr them, you could try asking somebody back home. It would be interesting to find out for sure if Maria and Sophia are related in some way. Although, with what you have told me about their surname, I now doubt that they are.

Thank you again. And sorry again for the confusion.

I have been waiting for this for 4 years as I had tickets for worlds in 2020... So you bet I am waiting with a lot of anticipation.

As for results, I care more about good skates than placements... but I hope that all the Canadian skaters have a good time at home worlds. It's truly a special experience to perform in front of a home crowd, so I wish for them to seize the day and not feel pressured negatively by it.

It would be very sad indeed. However, it rarely happens that home country comes away with no medals. So let's hope for the best!
Not to jinx them or anything, but I feel pretty certain that Stellato/Deschamps will pull out all the stops and end up on the podium, at least. Naturally Gilles/Poirier will also be in the hunt.

Actually, that’s an interesting question—as to S/D and G/P, which team does everyone think will have the higher placement in their event? And out of Chiu, Sadovsky, and Schizas, who does everyone think will have the highest placement?

Does anyone have a giphy of Keegan waving the Canadian flag?

Interesting question G/P pretty much have a guaranteed podium with a hard time to win reguardless of how well they skate (due to dance politics). S/D have a decent shot to win if they skate at their best, but just one mistake can drop them off the podium.

It's going to take some dedication to get oneself to the practices. If only I could be two places at once! LOL. I mainly want to see the men's practices, but I wouldn't mind seeing some others too. So I checked the men's schedule. Looks like once we get to Weds., all practices are at the alternate rink. Makes sense.

Sat -- PR 10:20 am - 12:15 pm
Saturdays practice is at the Bell Centre.

I don't think anyone can beat Chock and Bates. They are well liked, experienced, and have Marie France behind them. If or when Pc return will them fall to no.2 at IAM
