Patrick Chan

Patrick was so happy with his SP 3rd place finish, looking as happy as with any Worlds title he had won. It warmed my heart. And he was happy about his LP performance and achievements with no stress about missing a medal.

We can see he really is not feeling the pressure of needing to win whether the pressure is from within or without. He is realistic and confident of his plan and his progress. His is usually a 4 year Olympic plan. This time around, it is a 3 year plan, revised with observation of the current field and after an extremely difficult season of mental and emotional adjustments upon his return to a drastically changed world of Mens figure skating. Now, he says he already has 3 Worlds titles and he's not chasing them any more but has his own agenda and personal goals. I believe his ultimate goal is the Olympic Gold, yet, I also believe, he will be OK with a lesser medal or none at all. It just makes me very happy to see him really in this wonderful state of mind.

It amazes me how he always achieves his goals, save for the OGM for wanting it too badly. He got his quad rather easily at age 19 and started the feat of winning 3 Worlds titles consecutively, so far not achievable by anyone else under COP. Then he started his dedicated quest of supreme skating artistry and he succeeded brilliantly. That decision was actually against the trend in Mens figure skating with ISU incentive system and his own model of success. So here he is, the best skater in the world not rewarded for his unparalleled skills and artistry because it's now a jumpers' world. However, he is still competing and competitive. At age 26, he has actually acquired a new quad and has succeeded in its perfect execution in a long program. Amazing. Who else has done that? Next season, it will be included in his SP as well. He is narrowing the BV gap against the incredible teenage quad phenomenons and will indeed be contending for the top again with his quality of elements and performance. We never know how the stars will align on any particular competition day. Someone with a crazy number of quads may just pull off the perfect skate of his life or they may crash. But Patrick will do his best without compromising his values and accept the results. He will be happy for his personal goals achieved. And I know his goals include making us proud and enjoy his performances. And that he also succeeds brilliantly.

Thank you, Patrick.

sorry but what a bunch of silly people? I was going to watch... but now i am just going to sleep instead... so ridiculous... is it because there were too many canadians already with having to put two ladies in there?
They also didn't invited WEAPO who have one of the most beautiful gala number ever... it was the only piece i loved at nationals... they prefer B/S and C/L... i see what's happening here..

Oh well... and I thought that Finland had done a stellar job.... shame on them.

Charlie White focuses on the positive, though! Patrick follows his lead, and this interview makes me happier than I can possibly express. We won as fans today. (Not to mention that Patrick won for himself). Okay, I'll stop gushing and let you watch it now. :)

I have a transcript of Patrick's comments from this interview on my blog post. :)

Here's a more legible list:

Not sure why they decided not to invite Patrick. :scratch2: Too bad we won't see Sunday Morning again this time. I guess I won't need to blog about it, then. But I hope we will still see Patrick at the banquet!

I do have to say... in the pictures taken of him afterwards, he had his backpack on and looked like he was ready to just get outta there and rest... It's been a tough journey for him to enjoy, as he said. I hope he finds joy and purpose being on the ice. :agree:

How many years has it been since Patrick was not invited to perform an exhibition?

It's a strange situation for sure. I hope he does something lovely with his time.

Here's another article with comments from Patrick detailing his struggles:

Ahead of Olympics, figure skating is all about the big jumps

Big jumps mean extra injury risk, so Chan and his rivals increasingly train less but smarter.

"My body can't keep up, my legs start feeling heavy, they don't recover fast enough," Chan said. "It's like 60 percent, 70 percent recovery-focused now, my training. It used to be 70 percent physical training, on-ice training, off-ice training. So I kind of had to flip the page."

Michal Brezina also said:

"It brings a challenge to your health because it's like you're defying gravity," he said, reeling off a list of major injuries suffered by star skaters like Chen and two-time world champion Javier Fernandez. "I think we all have long-term consequences already. There's no way that any of these guys have not had an injury."

REST is more important than ever....

Maybe Patrick just wants to get back for a quick rest so he can work on his 2 quad SP for the WTT?

Great mindset :agree: :

It's the identical finish to last year's world championships in Boston, but in the moments after his skate, he spoke about embracing a different outlook on his skating this season.

"Emotionally it's very different," said Chan. "I was very upset last year because I had set myself up for failure. I put a lot a pressure to prove something to other people, as opposed to proving to myself.

"My approach today was to forget everything that's going on around me, forget how Yuzu [Hanyu] skated or anybody else before me and just put out what I can put out. And I got off the ice with a smile. . . this is a process for next year, leading up to the Olympics. I'm just trying to stay ahead of my game, or my own challenges."

Quad plans:

Two days earlier, Chan had skated his way into the top three in the short program with his superb all-around skills and artistry. But he knows changes are needed if he's to reach the Olympic podium again. He'll do some "number-crunching" before deciding to add a fourth quad to his long program.

He plans to increase the quads in his short program from one to two, and could experiment with that at the World Team Trophy later this month in Tokyo.

"Fourth quad in the long? I don't know," Chan said. "It's a toss-up. . . I don't know what happens if I had a fourth quad. I'm not like some of these guys who just roll out of bed and do it. I have to be a little more methodical. That's just the type of athlete I am, my build, my genetics, I just need to be smart. I can't let myself get carried away with what the other guys are doing and conform myself to their style, if that makes sense."

Yes, Patrick, it makes sense.

From GS article:

“It was well-paced, if I look at the whole week,” reflected Chan. Today was a great result of this new plan I have with practices, which is to be more conserved and be smart in practice and not to train, but just get the feeling of the ice.”

“As a result, I can maybe add it to the short with less hesitation,” Chan said of the clean execution of his quadruple Salchow and looking towards the Olympic season.

I'd rather see his 2Q SP than a gala. :)
