Rusty Hanger Awards

Until I saw Mike's tattoo shirt, I thought Brian J.'s "1492" costume took the cake. But I'll give this award to Mike. I didn't mind his program at all, but I thought that shirt was gross! I hope he doesn't wear it in his guest appearances for SOI!

My favorite color is blue, so I  the color of Ryan's shirt (I really enjoy his skating too). However, I do agree that the style of this particular shirt looked like a pj top. I'm more for the "tucked-in" look.

I like Brian very much, but his short program costume is quite atrocious. And any day-glo neon "highlighter marker" colors that make my eyes bleed (a la ice dance costumes) need to be avoided at all future competitions!!!

LOL On Brian's costume looking like a couch!!

I'm laughing so hard. When they did a close up of him on TV yesterday, I thought the fabric looked like the vinyl on a tattered old couch someone gave me back when I was a starving college student.

Mathman, I too had to laugh when the TV commentator said Brian's costume was supposed to represent a ship. Wouldn't it have been better to dress up like Columbus rather than the boat? Reminded me of our discussions last year about the Swan Lake costumes - you don't have to dress up like a bird, feathers and all, for us to know you are skating to Swan Lake. The same rule should hold for boats!!

I am happy to report that I saw no obvious Rusty Hanger nominations in the ladies category. I'm sure like everyone else, I liked some better than others, but no big fashion violations IMO. (although I agree about that horrid blue eye shadow!!)

Ice dance is going to be a whole 'nother story I think...

Bear in mind -- Brian's FRENCH. Not as weird, concept-wise, as most of the other French skaters, but still French nonetheless. They seem to be into this sort of thing. Stanick Jeannette probably would have tried to dress up like the ocean......

Hi Johnny...

Maybe Brian could add some Blue skate covers. That way he could be the boat ON the ocean. ;)

brian looks like that if you put a light bulb in his navel that you could hang him as a ceiling fan at any Steakhouse. :p

What is really ugly about Weiss's costume: the shirt is so skin-tight that the pants look baggy and clumsy by comparison---as if the shirt was SO tight it was pushing all the flab downward.....

You all know by now that Ryun won the LP. He was faulty but he was very entertaining and completed some big jumps. Brian, in that ugly weird brown outfit was not at his best. Lysacek did a well choreographed Singing in the Rain but one was wishing for Kurt Browning. I believe Evan is on the injured list with hip and groin problems. The next questioin: who will skate in the Worlds uninjured?

Joe

Hi Joe...

Michael definitely looks as though he's lost weight. I think it's impossible for a fan to tell if that's *healthy* or not. I think it depends on weather he has lost fat content, or lean mass (muscles / organs). I'm not sure it's possible to totally determine that on the surface.

I hope he's healthy, and just sporting an odd shirt!

Well, all we can do at this stage is "nominate." However I'm beginning to think Brian Joubert is trying to get more than one Rusty Hanger award at a single competition assuming this is his short program costume, and he wears the bondage thing again in the long.DG

Brian Joubert was trying to look like a ship as he performed to "1492". He wore a "sail" on his back, and there were several feet of rope twined around one of his legs. Overall, it was a wierd look, IMHO. Whatever the material was, it appeared as though Joubert could hardly breathe through it, and perspiration was dripping off his forehead when he finished his routine.

From the looks of his program - falls and mistakes galore - somebody in the audience should have thrown him a life preserver.

Ropes

That's right! Pezerat and ropes! Good memory there.

Methinks that Brian didn't want to dress like Columbus because Todd dressed like Columbus.

BTW, the whole Columbus thang reminds me of figure skating. Columbus was an Italian sailing for Spain, right? Like our figure skaters who skate for whichever country works best for them...

Guess there's a precident for not worrying too much about your country of origin...

I can't believe he has his name written across his chest. What was he thinking?!!!
I would say he wasn't.

Wow. I thought Philippe had some strange costumes at times, but Brian is really coming into his own in a fashion sense...and not in a good way by the looks of the SP and LP costumes from Skate America, lol. If I had to choose just one atrocious costume from this competition I'd have to go with Joubert's LP costume. You have to feel bad for that cow. It would be so sad to know that it died to make such a bizarre skating costume....lol. I'm thinking this program will be revamped as will the costume....or maybe that is what I am hoping. Anyway, great comments guys! I've been laughing my butt off.

I liked Jahnke's shirt a lot better. Also Miki  (Although Miki, Miki, she looked fine, in both the red SP dress and the black LP dress, also.)

After the terrible accident to Tatiana T., Peter Carruthers made some speculation about whether pairs skaters should wear helmets. At first I thought, no, that would destroy the aesthetics of the presentation.

But the more I think about it, that would open up a whole new category in costuming:
