It's EX though? So no judging.

I wouldn't worry about the swearing. 90% of the people will be utterly unable to make out the lyrics.

I can't imagine too many show promoters would be thrilled to have a skater skating to an expletive-ridden song as they try to encourage parents to bring their kids to these shows.

Maybe he'll skate to it overseas then. Seriously, overseas nobody ever understands rap lyrics. Besides, Kanye's hip, so who knows what promoters might think.

He could, they might not differentiate, the thing is the lyrics are about racism which most people in Asia don't (usually) face because it's more homogenous so they might not care. They've banned songs for being sexually explicit before (English and their native language) but I wouldn't know until it actually happens.

Someone needs to tell Jeremy Abbott this is not okay. It is completely problematic to be a white man skating to a song written by a black man about suffering and anti-racism. He did not do his homework. Also, although the suggestion of skating to it without lyrics is nice in theory, it would also be the act of a white man silencing the black voice. Not okay in the slightest.

Jeremy is a wonderful skater with beautiful skating skills, but just because we appreciate him in certain ways doesn't mean he gets a pass for this.
I agree completely. I'm not opposed to skaters using rap, but when a rap song is explicitly about suffering anti-black racism in the US, it's really inappropriate for Jeremy to skate to it.

That said, it's got a great beat and I can see why it would be fun to perform to. Perhaps if he skated without the lyrics it would be less of an issue.

This might be a stupid question (and if it doesn't get answered here I'll post it in the Stupid Questions thread), but do skaters need to get permission from the artist to use music that isn't in public domain? Like, would Jeremy had to have gotten permission from Kanye West to skate to this song? If the artist doesn't have an issue with a white skater skating to his music, then that also reduces the problem.

I am cringing because I can think of 2 scenarios:

1) Jeremy will be portraying all the anger and rage of that song in which case he is putting on the persona of a black man's issues and then when he takes off his skates he gets to walk out of the arena with all the privilege of being a white male.
2) The performance is just about the beat, bright flashing lights and so on, in which case black voices get silenced totally just for superficiality.

Either scenario is awful. He really hasn't thought this through.

Two words: cultural appropriation.

As soon as his exhibition program is over, he can be the white figure skater without the cultural baggage that an African-American has to carry all the time. Especially an unusual time to debut this program considering the Charleston shootings.

Jeremy always has good intentions with what he says or does, but he never carries them out in an appropriate manner.

*sigh*

Let's have a do over, Jeremy.

Is it just this year that the EX's seem to have gone to rap and hip-hop more than others?

Anyway, to cheer everyone up, here's an EX I'd LIKE to see, as everyone reporting from Dream on Ice said it was really fun.

Bolero by Hiroaki Sato.

He's aging out of Juniors and I fear we may never see him on the GP circuit, but when I saw him in juniors his love for figure skating and theatrics was fun to watch.

I think they will show it tonight.

Can someone please explain the offence at Jeremy's planned exhibition? I would not personally make a difference between - hypothetically - a man skating to music where a lady sings about opporession of women in certain parts of the world, a straight man skating to a song about the oppression of gay people, a white guy skating to a song about the oppression of the Roma, etc. I don't actually have anything against any of those hypothetical scenarios, and I wonder if those who consider Jeremy's program in poor taste, would also think so of those hypothetical programs. Granted, the timing of the program isn't lucky in relation to the Charleston events, but still, isn't skating one of the vehicles of drawing public attention to topical issues, regardless of whether the skater is of the same race and sex that the song tells of? :confused2:

This is what I hope didn't happen...but did....

Who's excited that we'll be seeing Queen and Beatles programs!

edit: I garbled up the words and had to try to make it sound more....sensical.

Logically, you make a good point, but so many of the issues you listed above are deeply emotional. None more so these days than the issue of racism in America due to the recent shootings and tension...though I live on the other side of the world the news is still broadcast where I am.

So when a 'gut feeling' of a lot of people says it's offensive, in this case, it probably is.

I wish this type of thing can be taken to another thread because this is turning into something else.

Yes I get that I'm going to be told "We have the right to post what we want," or "It's sort of related to this," or "It's a good discussion." I've seen enough comments and YouTube comments to know what people will say to me.

Okay, so can we stop talking about if this EX is racist and go back to programs?

People ARE talking about a program. Obviously the topic arouses interest and needs to be discussed.

Then why are you still trying to control what people want to discuss. Just the fact that you don't feel comfortable with the topic of the discussion doesn't mean people shouldn't discuss it.

I mean, it's good to discuss it, but maybe make another thread for it.

Your point about the removal of lyrics silencing the black voice is a "duh!" point that I totally didn't consider in my original post. Thanks for mentioning it!

I'm still wondering though...if Jeremy had to get permission and Kanye personally signed off on it because he's thinks it's a legitimately interesting expression of his work, who are we to say otherwise? (Kanye would obviously be aware of all the points we've mentioned, though.) I'm assuming Jeremy just had to pay some sort of fee to a corporation, rather than getting Kanye's personal permission? I wish I had a better idea of how this worked.
