Patrick Chan

Hallo 4everchan! Nice to meet you!

Oh I meant that moment in the KNC when a fan accidentally beaned Patrick in the head and he mock fainted.

Very good point. He's going to be the linchpin in Team Canada getting that gold, now that ladies like Osmond are locked and loaded. Working on behalf of a team is different so I am sure it will propel him to push harder there.

HAHA... i didn't see it... i was watching on tv... so not much KnC action.. I will have to watch again...i am sure it would make a good gif...

I'm not so much worried about the performance itself. Everybody has a bad day, and it's better that it happened here rather than at the Olympics. But I am worried about Patrick's attitude and some of his comments to the press after the competition.

"Look at this week. You got moments like that, you just kind of throw your hands up and …I’m not a fan of this. I’d rather be home and be in my own bed and be comfortable."
"It’s definitely much harder now. I come to these events and the novelty has worn off a bit"
"It was hard for me to get started this year. Maybe because I know the end is near. So it’s getting harder and harder and harder to push myself and keep grinding it out at the very highest level. It gets tough."

You cannot compete at the level required for the Olympic Games unless you actually WANT to win. And to me it seems like he doesn't really care anymore?

During the TSN broadcast Tracy Wilson said that she was worried about him and that he needs to ask himself why he's here. I don't think I've ever heard her say that about Patrick before, but it's true. He can't just go to the Olympics because all of his other teammates are going or because he thinks maybe he could get a Team gold medal. He has to go because he actually wants to be there and he wants to compete and he wants to win.

So yeah idk. We'll see what happens I guess.

Hi Valentino,

Welcome to Patrick's fan fest where we celebrate our beloved chiddy ;)

I agree with you.... some of Patrick's mental game is off...

I think it has to do with a few things.... and that he needs to rewrite the path...

Here is what I think :

When he came back : he was excited to compete... he didn't think his BV was weak or anything... he just went for it... he would dig himself a large whole in the SP (oh MTK... what a bad idea LOL) but then his Chopin, he would feel it, feel the energy from it would bring the best of him... He even won 4CC with it... and he was in a good position at Worlds if the ice had been simply better...

WTT Shoma landed the 4F... exotic quads were no longer just Jin's domaine and Patrick took the bull by the horn and learned at his venerable age, a 4S.... a gorgeous one too.

So, while some kids were learning their jumps, Patrick competed more often, adding a senior B, to give himself a chance to gradually improve the chances of getting his 4S steady.
He got it done... and eager again to raise his BV... added a very difficult combo... the 3aloop3s

Some of these things didn't work at worlds... but his SP was fabulous so he went and pushed himself and tried the 4S in the sp at WTT

Then... knowing that others had more quads... he tried the 4f this summer...

and this is where the pattern changes

Patrick realized the 4F wouldn't work out.... he nixed the idea....

Then, Nebelhorn mystery..... but he didn't get to compete....

Then, the big declaration about removing the 4S for now.... this is where i thought :okay... something is wrong... why is he not willing to take all of his weapons when he goes to the rink to fight?

I think that's when he thought that skating a quality program (i e clean ) meant more to him... There is nothing wrong with that but nobody can control that.... None of the men went clean yesterday.... same in Russia.... lowering his BV and hoping to be clean is a mistake. Patrick is a fighter and he cannot go unarmed. It goes against his personality....

To me, if felt like he had given up... he was saying he had nothing to prove etc... that's all very true : but there is one thing though.... On the night of the performance, you still have to face the music... and this... he couldn't.... His physical matters are definitely psychosomatic.... feeling leg heavy and tired happens to dancers or runners when stressed.

He was hoping to be clean here... to probably add his 4S back later.... now he sees that he cannot even be clean....

and he says this

“I mean, look at me,” he said. “I’m trying to find the good in this footwork sequence, when everyone is doing quads.

which expresses that he is no longer in the game... he cares about his steps.... while it would be more appropriate to care about landing a 4lz....

The sport is changing... everyone is trying new quads... even the boys at home... ... but he feels left out.

Patrick needs to refocus and reprogram himself properly.

He can compete with anyone. Even his flawed performance gave him 90 points in PCS.
He is a fabulous jumper.... not just a great artistic skater.
He has 2 great programs.

He is a competitor with the experience of the biggest moments... he can certainly bounce back.

He has one last olympics to go to... that opportunity will never get back....

I wish he would spend some time with Meagan and Eric, his close friends.... Eric is skating all year with a hernia, pushing through because they want to go to the games... they have both said : our bodies only have to hold up 6 more months.....

Hold on Patrick! Refocus! Get your competitive spirit back. Do not underestimate yourself! Yes others have more quads....

but it's okay.... you can only control what YOU are doing ... not what the others are doing.... -that's a basic rule in neuro-linguistic programming...

I hope he will find his joy back!

Ah, Tracy - and you - have hit at the crux of the matter. I'm just surprised that it took so long for her to see it. Perhaps she finally said it because he had always managed to pull through despite and misgivings or reservations about his reason for skating.

Recall that ever since he's come back, he has never really given a solid answer to the question, "why did you come back?" Ideally, the answer would be "the love of skating," or "love of competition". He had said that Kathy said it would make him a more versatile skater, and originally he said he wanted to contribute more artistry to the sport. However, his competitors drove the sport in a different direction, which left him dismayed and having to catch up.

Forgive me but I've thought that perhaps he is more like a very talented worker who doesn't like his job that much. As long as external rewards are within reach, he'll stay on the job. However, the internal drive to put in his all to reach the prize despite very difficult challenges is a bit lacking. It's the difference between doing something out of love vs. duty, and that makes a big difference.

Also, upon reflection, while I understand what he meant when he said he wanted to enjoy his last year of competition, now I don't think that was necessarily a good idea. It would be better to think of himself somewhat like a soldier on a mission, fighting to reach his goal - just like what was said about Eric.

I've thought this with regards to Gracie Gold, but think it could apply to Patrick as well, at least at this point in his career.. Being talented at something and liking it are two completely different things. Granted, being talented can bring success, and that can help with the liking part, and those external rewards can ease some of the dislike. It's when things are difficult that motivation becomes more of a problem. I think Patrick genuinely likes skating but is perhaps tired of the competitive grind and all the quads at this point.

I don't think we should worry too much though. It's one competition (and really just one program since his short was relatively decent), and better he got this out of the way now than later in the season. He has been traveling a lot and had travel mishaps getting to Regina and perhaps just ran out of steam in the long program. It happens sometimes and one can only turn the page and look forward.

To me, it is clear that Patrick LOVES skating. However, he has said he never liked competing.

Competing is hard mentally... especially for a true artist like Patrick... why go out there, to get examined by judges and fans and get compared to people who are not even close to understand the blade like he does????

Seriously?

Yes... some have jumps he doesn't have... Yes... some are more efficient in competition than he is... but it's extremely draining and difficult to constantly put yourself on stage and be compared with others, especially if what you have to offer is not the biggest factor in giving the awards..

I used to compete in my field and at a certain age, (about Patrick's) I stopped... I was at the peak of my technique and artistry but it didn't interest judges very much.... there were tons of reasons why it was not advantageous for them to give me a prize they could give to a 19 y o kid... :) I was also criticized for the choice of repertoire... focusing on detailed artistry rather than explosive virtuosity.... One judge came to me one day and said : the fact that you are playing this extremely difficult music which requires such control and maturity is playing against you... we want to hear the "greatest hits" the "warhorses"....

In some ways... I can understand that Patrick may feel that the competitive field right now is so focused on base value that whatever he does, he doesn't have his place....

BUT HE IS WRONG :) I am still an artist.. still a performer... and I have no regrets developing my personal repertoire.

What saddens me though in here is that Patrick is not fair to himself : he has quads. He has the most beautiful textbook jumps.... flawless technique... the jumps go up, he rotates at a beautiful speed which allows us to see the trajectory of the jump, he is straight in the air and lands with a smooth exit, without losing speed...

Very few skaters have these qualities. I wish Patrick would do this exercise... simple and stupid perhaps.. but helpful... He should sit down and write down all the elements he has on paper.. and all the ones he doesn't have and wishes he could have....

He would realize that he is what? One quad away of being on par with everyone???? Well... that doesn't make him obsolete... or redundant....

Patrick, trust yourself.

PS very sexy abs in this EXH today

I just wanted to come in and say I read the discussion about Patrick's outing at Skate Canada and I am impressed how you guys are handling this sensitive issue and are able to critisize Patrick in such a thoughtful and eloquent manner, without losing the positive focus. Patrick was wonderful at the Gala tonight and certainly still enjoys skating. I hope he will go to NHK. Ice is slippery and who knows what happens in the future. He still has the goods, I'm sure.

I've only been able to bring myself to watch the SP which other than a few untidy landings the program is as expected. Perfect control of every aspect of the physical movements. You can feel his emotions coming thru each turn and swell of the music. Wasn't sure how I'd feel about Dust in the Wind but here is my reaction translated into emoji : :dbana:

I've self imposed a hamburger styled avatar punishment just in case I brought my bad luck to him by using his avatar this weekend. I'm all superstitious like that :dance2:

He'll be fine and the main goal now is going to be to be ready for nationals right? Plenty of time for a guy with his skills and experience .

Yes, indeed. May the rest of his season go well!

Wow, thanks for coming in and for the compliments! You are welcome back any time!

Just finished updating my blog post with the EX gala stuff!

I really liked what the B.ESP commentator said about Patrick:

"24 hours after the one of the low moments in his career when he failed to get on the podium in this mens’ event here in Skate Canada, he could come out and perform like that… sense of professionalism, sense of responsibility, call it what you will, but it was very impressive and… he has been throughout his career."

His jumps still look bad in the Ex. When someone can't do smooth regular jumps in exhibition you know they are off form. The Skating Lesson people were saying that in Detroit they can't get him to do a run-through. I don't know what's going on in his head but he really needs to answer some questions for himself, not for the public.

IDK if you are aware but you are in the fan fest for Patrick, not the edge where debates are abundant, and things are up for scrutiny.
As far as things were concerned in exhibition today, his jumps were ok. Also, TSL needs to stop speculating.

Bcash let me invite you to our Canadian thread in The Edge. You can openly share your opinion there. Fan fests are meant to be happier places. It's in the description.

Please keep posts positive and related to the skater/team accordingly.

As for Patrick I hope he gets all the love, support, and help he needs to compete. Everyone's rooting for him.

I've just watched his EX program:love::love:

A Japanese writer posted her article about SCI for a web magazine this evening and interviewed Patrick.
Here is the translation of what he said:

"My body just couldn't move as intended. Just like yesterday, I lose my physical energy the next day after I'm in a good condition. I wasn't in perfect shape yesterday. I lost my balance, too upward, and rushed into jumps. I've never done such a horrible performance in my skating life, so, it may be good that I did it for now." Chan talked with a bitter smile.

As I mentioned that there's been a rumor among his fans that he might withdraw from NHK, he gave me an immediate reply "No ! Never!" with a look of surprise.

"I haven't been to NHK ever since I made a debut in the senior competition in 2006. In that sense, I am supposed to make a circuit in GPS. This is my last GPS season and I'm prepared to do what I must do until the end." He assured.

Hope he feels up now:)

Thank you for the translation, Ice Doggy! It's much better than what I got out of Google Translate.

But the bottom line is that he will complete his GP circuit.

We have a lot of encouragement to send him. I hope he gets some good rest between now and then!

And... I want to encourage him that we his fans just want him to skate happy and well, no matter where he ends up, and it's no shame to be 2nd or 3rd on the podium when he's done his best (esp. next to the other quadsters).

oh well :) we said that podiums and medals didn't matter...

i hope you didn't think i was disappointed with his placement... I couldn't care less...

I was sad because that was the most difficult (after Sochi) performance I had seen Patrick give.... and I was worried... is he injured??? Does he want to compete? etc

So now, these news lighten everything up... Go Chiddy... HAVE FUN!!!!

I just hope he has the fight in him to make one last go at the games, at least to deliver for the team event even if he can't medal individually (unless he goes completely clean!). I would much rather see him go cleanly with his gorgeous skating and elegant lines, without too many quads than see another splat fest like in Sochi for 2018. Otherwise men's skating is done for me, and if it is, then the last fave I'll have would be Chan.

Nah, I know you just want him to skate well no matter the placement.

I'm sure he and Marina, etc. will be working on try to figure out what went wrong with that LP. He could have been too tense and maybe not slept well the night before.

Yes, more fun and relaxation for him! It's very interesting - he needs to stay loose and relaxed and have fun... while at the same time having the mindset of a warrior. Not easy.

Awesome, thank you for coming in (or coming back) and sharing your comments!

In the meantime, look at this gorgeous pic of Patrick's skates up close at the EX gala:

What an ice storm! :agree:

Skating was not conferring my bliss on Saturday, and after two days of physical inactivity, I took time off from figure skating to catch up on other matters. Back and happy to see positivity goes on and new posters joined in.

My bliss was shaken with Anna's horrible horrible falls, more so than Patrick's off performance. I was not shaken up by his LP because it still mesmerized me, but the missed jumps piled up and I became concerned. I have followed his mindset in a distance for years, fascinated and studying and validating a natural winner's emotions, thoughts, attitude, responses to situations, etc. but this season it has been particularly off.

I believe reality follows your beliefs and mindset. When Patrick came back, he said he wanted to stay with the top pack, so he finished 5th, mission/limit accomplished. This year so far, I've been concerned with what he uttered. Yes, I like his new wisdom, new self-centeredness, and the more relaxed attitude, but he has sounded defeated, like his old rivals, like those exasperated in chasing him. I support his pursuit of ideal skating, not medals, but he's sounded resigned. He's talked about the youngsters' bodies, their awesome jumps, his old age, and that jumps are not his forte, etc. He wants to skate for joy but he's been focusing on the negative, on the frustration, and even fear. Fear, that is the worst. Nathan is fearless, Jin is fearless, and Patrick was fearless. Fear creeps into everything. Fearing a quad makes all jumps fearsome. Fear of competition brings under-performances. Fear ruins everything. Love supports everything.

Patrick has been focusing on the negative instead of the positive, on fear instead of love and on distractions rather than on his goal.

Focus on the love and joy of skating, on bringing the performance, on all the love you can give and all the love you receive, Patrick. Love your skating, your blessings, your glorious career, your fans, your programs and music, your choreography, your steps and your jumps. Yes, your jumps - you have been great at them until you doubt yourself. Focus on why you are skating and competing, not why you would rather not; on what you want to accomplish with your performance, not on what may go wrong; and on your current goals, not on their obstacles.

This past weekend were just off days for you, Patrick. You are still a champion, in more ways than one. May we see you bring it at NHK, and show us your amazing stuff.

Go Patrick!!!!!!!!!!!!
