2024 Skate Canada Women's Free Skate

Again, not really, Alysa did exactly the same as she did in the early competition. So, did Isabeau last week. Bradie, ditto. Isabeau is not an early season skater, and Alysa and Bradie are doing well considering they are just returning to competitition. They are both strong competitors. Elyce just had one good competition where she was definitely overscored in PCS for her empty programs. The last two competitions were very inline with what is expected and previous seasons performances. The Korean women also did as expected, unfortunately.

Actually, the ones who surprised me were Rino (in a good way). Yeah! And, Kaori and Hana. I expected more from them. They both seemed very very tired this week. I'm sure Kaori will get it together and I am really rooting for Hana .
The problem with the American girls is that they are better competitors than they are skaters. So far the tech calls have been fairly strict, so that really impacts inferior technique. Rino was looking good in regional and local competition (as was Wakaba) so I was more surprised at how poorly she skated in the SP. Her LP was great, but she outrageously got 2 points less PCS than Kaori's sloppy program.

US skater Amber Glenn is a spectacular skater and jumper, but less than reliable competitor (although she's getting better and better). She'll easily be on the World's podium with two clean skates.

Seoyeoung Wi has so much potential. I'm not sure that being in the Korean field helps her, though. She has so much more which we could see, but she just doesn't seem to have the confidence. She would do better in a different federation where she could gain confidence from being their top skater.
Could she please represent Mexico? 😅

She has a nice 3A she has been landing. But terrible under pressure and her general skating is inferior to the Japanese. Plus the Japanese have girls who also have 3As and quads who who can beat her clean programs. Granted, the US Fed has more clout than Japan, but if everything is equal the Japanese are better skaters.

Since the sequence rules have changed (no penalty), I'm wondering if Alysa should change her 3Lz/e/3s to a 3Lz/2a and a non-combo 3s. Her three jump combo could be 3F/2t/2r.
Yes. You are so smart to think this through…
If you are a skater and struggle with landing combos, simply, go for a different layout that forces you to land individual triples separately to maximize scoring potential.
3Lz 2A 2A
3F 2T
3Lz 2T 2Lo
This allows her to land the following as individual triples:
3F
3Lo
3S
3T
She would get more points as she will rotate these triples due to not being part of a combo.
Right now, she is landing 2.5T and 2.5S and is losing valuable points

What Japanese skaters besides Shimada (who is not senior eligible for Milan) are landing quads? Watanabe, Yoshida and Higuchi have landed the 3a, but not this season, except for Yoshida's LP at Nebelhorn.

Im not saying they should inherently know how to pronounce names. Im saying that sometime in the last 8 years that she has been prominent in skating, that he should have heard her name correctly pronounced. Since it is simple to remember, he obviously didn't care.
And using his magic powers, he should have recognized the sometime and known "ah, that's how you say it!" and ignored all other times he heard it?

Kaori 😫🫣
I sensed this would happen after watching her compete domestically.
Her SP is good. Her jump layout is the same and I like the program
Her FP… disastrous….. not only did I struggle to follow along with the program, she just moves around the ice and moves her arms and there are no highlights or anything interesting or worth watching over again.
Also, changing her layout, the 2A eu 3S has not been working for her. Domestically, and at this event, she pops either the axel or the salchow.
Also, she removed the 3F 3T and amazing 2A 3T 2T from the second half and replaced it simply with a 3Lz 2T, which I don’t agree with because she doesn’t really have a technically sound lutz and now she is repeating this jump. The 120+ score was generous as I would have given her 3 points lower for TES and 5 points lower for PCS. I would have barely given her first place still…
She is maki my me think that she could lose her National and World title this year. The question is, who is going to seize the moment. Anna Frolova just won Stage 1 with clean triples and good skating skills… which athlete is going to seize the opportunity?

Rino - she is my favourite Japanese skater along with Yuna Aoki and Rion and Mone. I’m so glad the world got to see such an amazing free skate. The skate deserved 140+ score though 🥺

Hana - glad she held on to the bronze medal. She risks with a 3A and people don’t understand that as long as you get 4+ on a 3A, that it can actually help you score more points than a non-3A program. She fell in the 3Lz and lost silver with that mistake. She is an exciting skater.

Kimmy - just like Nina P, just missed a medal…. It is harder for smaller federations to breakthrough… she was so close and I was sad to see her reaction at the kiss n cry.

Maddie - she had the sale of her life. I’m glad she is going for two 3Lz now. She was happy to score over 190. I think she wanted to secure her worlds spot and she might have just done that. 80% chance she goes to Worlds now. She also secured two GP events next season. So, good for her. She also had a case for being on the podium

Alysa - love her programs. But, glad the judges didn’t reward her 2.5 T/S combos. She needs to adjust her jumping layout.

Elyce - this is the skater the judges want to reward. She actually has the most potential.

If you were to tell me Kaiya would place right behind Alysa and Elyce, I would have taken that. She fought and grabbed 8th place and points. Love her with Tracy and her being at this camp.

Sara-Maude - nice fight

The Korean skaters - this is how they skated domestically. Yelim placed 8/8 at Korean domestic event and 12/12 here 😳
(They are lucky they have C.Kim)
Also, Ahsun Yun seems to be their second best skater this season. Hope to see Ahsun take advantage of this opportunity.

Her current combos are possibly safer for her at them moment. She last competed under the old rules. The 3Lz-2A probably isn't in her muscle memory to the same extent as the combos she did for years. I don't think the peak of the competition season is the best time to make the change - the off season would be better.

Right, in Budapest, Alysa had a tech score of 59.19, and here it was 59.34, the big difference was PCS. She got 60 here and 64 in Budapest.
This makes no sense, given the similarity in the way she skated at both events. I thought she was one of the few who actually performed their programs. I think her PCS should have been higher in both the short and long programs.

Sumiyoshi does quads.

Being a professional skating announcer he should have heard it pronounced correctly many times.

I like her, but she has had only one ratified quad a year ago at France Grand Prix and then finished tenth at Japanese Chsmpionships. Btw, I read your Twitter post, and my people are not going back to Poland.

The Japanese are much deeper than the US. Yes, she did a quad like I said. I guess the Poles are lucky then.
