2025 Skate Ontario Sectional Series | Aug 15-17

77.4 for the free, 126.82 total for Yudin/Rossi, Moulin Rouge: The Musical. My cat is fascinated by the stream (I can't stream it on my tv) and is wagging her tail on my keyboard, so you may not get much commentary from me later.

Desrochers/Thrasher - landed a 3 jump sequence and the camera blocked Jazmine's landings! Rude. Fall on the first throw, hand down on the second? I think that was a 2S that they landed. 104.71 for the free, total 166.65 for the win.

They're moving on to the Pre-Novice Women free instead of Senior Pairs, Miura/Kihara withdrew.

Junior pairs thoughts:
Lucia/james - still lacking in skating skills. James is much better than Lucia IMO. Not sure how tall he is but perhaps could do better with a stronger partner
Laiu / Haubrich - I like her. She seems to love being a pairs girl and is catching on fast. Also showing some cat feet surety on the throws. See how they develop in the next year.
Yudin / Lopez. Skating through the music and focussed on the elements so showing how new they are. I think they will be good
Derocher / Thrasher. They both landed all their jumps! Throws still a work in progress. But the rest is so good. I really love their new short. I hope they have a great season

I have been enjoying the skates. The quality is the same as when the stream was free though. Junior women - Victoria B had a good skate. (Underscored?) I am now a big fan too of Quinn Startek -wow. Ksenia didn’t rotate the triple loop unfortunately. Gabby flew! Hope the free goes well. Kaiya is wonderful but she is still not clean on her triple-triple - imo her score was a gift. Elise Dawson was a lovely surprise. Breken was ethereal but sadly missed the lutz again. Minsol looked mostly clean I think. She stumbled a bit at the start of the step sequence. I think she would disappear in the Korean pack of women though.- she should skate for Canada and give Maddie competition. She was awarded 66+ which I think was a bit high.

Kaiya lost the 3-3 in the growth spurt and I don’t think it’s coming back. She will need at minimum 3F+3T or 3Lz+3T for the SP to be World/Olympic level. Gabby was able to do it with 3T+3T because it was so massive but that usually isn’t the case. It’s one reason I am hesitant to get so excited about Lia Cho. Kaiya looked just as promising around the same age and they’re from the same coach.

Gabby is really the only one with the overall package to be top level at the moment if she can get back in form. I haven’t seen her skate yet because every competition she has done this summer has either not been streamed or it’s paid, but from the scores and hearing from people who have seen her in person it sounds very promising. I would love to see her at Skate Canada. I’m not ruling Uliana out yet because she does have the 3-3 that so many lack but she will need to drastically improve her PCS. I’m not sure she can get there unless she changes coaches.

If Minsol can make the switch she has a really strong shot at the next quad. If Maddie and/or Gabby continue it could make for a solid team. Plus Lia and Victoria in Juniors. Bonus if Uliana and Kaiya can make improvements.

Good score for Jazmine and Kieran. She must have landed those individual jumps 🤭. The battle against Ava and Yohnathan is on.

Edit: Love their 2A 1A 2A layout. I can just picture Meghan with her calculator computing the best layout to maximize points and this is it!! Brilliant!!

She did
2a-1a-2a which is not a bad seq considering it does give 7.7 points in BV and could be quite stable for them

2s late in the program which is probably what is intended at this point.

In the SP they have to use a lutz/flip or toe throw... which they are doing of course but in the lp they went for 3s throw and 3loop throw, falling on the salchow throw...

however, even with the mistakes, this is a competitive layout for them (internationally speaking)

Yes. I like the is layout. They are maximizing the points they can grab from what they are able to do. 👏

If you have Twitter (X), people have uploaded videos of Gabby's programs from the US competition a few weeks ago. Also, there were uploads yesterday of some of the pairs, dancers and girls who skated yesterday. So if anyone wants to catch some programs that are hidden behind a stream paywall, Twitter is the place to go. The only issue is, sometimes you get a glimpse of figure skating twitter (fstwt) drama between different fandoms

Holding my breath on Kaiya. She didn’t have a good entrance into the triple flip and hesitated deciding to add the triple toe. Need more reps to discount her completely. Also there is a very long line of young female skaters who lose their jumps post puberty. I remember Joannie Rochette talking about it pre 2010 Olympics. How difficult it was for her to adjust. Kaiya has so many other wonderful qualities that I wish her the best in conquering the <

With Gabby, let’s see how her free goes. What she has done so far is a minor miracle though mentally as well as physically. Fingers crossed🤞

I like Chantalle Chipilo. I think she popped into some doubles and fell when she tried to get one of her combos, but it didn't feel like it got in the way of the program. 78.04 for the free, total 115.88 into first.

Mila - I don't think Last Dance works for a free, it's high energy and she didn't have that energy for the middle after the first jumping passes. She was able to get more towards the end, I think she'd do better with a slower paced song. 76.05 for the free, total 127.95 into first so she will medal.
