I only started watching skating after Sochi 2014. I haven't really watched/listened to much opera, either, so I hadn't heard it. I feel like such a newbie around here sometimes...

Haha I didn't really get into figure skating until after Sochi as well. (I did watch growing up when it was on TV, but did not nearly comprehend the sport as much). Since I'm all caught up to everything since Sochi, I like to go on Youtube and look up old championship-winning performances from the past.... sometimes watching commentary by Dick Button or the Eurosport Commentators can be extremely informative and give better background/make you appreciate today's skaters even more ^_^

Me too. And I caught on learning the rules fairly quickly.

During. I had skated as a kid and watched some, but I lost interest. So after Sochi, I started skating again and also following the sport, and it's only snowballed since

I've always loved skating in some way or form since I was little, paid a wee more attention in Vancouver 2010, and then when Sochi 2014 came, BOOMED my life had never been the same ever again.
We are all new at some point! Think of all the great programs you still have a chance to see for the first time.

Actually watched that this morning. Amazing that they did that with an injury!
They'd been skating it for two years and never skated that well. You could see the potential of the program early on. The first real glimpses of chemistry and a relationship on the ice--which they had spent years struggling to achieve. They are one of those rare teams that came all the way to the second step of the world podium as technical powerhouses and then transformed themselves into the great performers of the discipline. This performance, though, was one of those watershed moments. For them as a team, for Chinese skating in general, and the "real" arrival of the Chinese pairs program at the pinnacle of the sport. They won the year before with errors, but they became legendary in this moment.

Whenever I watch that video, as well as thoroughly enjoying the performance, I am amazed by how much the U.S. commentators talk (at least they did then). They didn't shut up through the whole thing! They even talk about background stuff that could be easily mentioned before they start to skate! I don't think I've ever known a British commentator talk that much through a performance.

I almost couldn't finish because the music was so wonderful but I couldn't hear it half the time because THE COMMENTATORS WOULD NOT SHUT UP! It was a great program but man, those commentators were horribly distracting...
There's another version. The entire program was re-aired on U.S. TV after the event--maybe between performances during the Gala. And they took the commentary out. I can't remember the network ever doing this before (though I assume they have), but I remember that a sans commentary version did exist and it was the one I used to re-watch. I should really go digging in my video closet & see if I can find the gala next time I feel compelled to watch this program.

It is the female version of Voronov's It's a man's world. In this case, it is a Mirai's world! She appears more energized, quirky, jussed, aggro mode than ever. I kind of like it. Whatever works at this point!!! I even kind of like this wacky edit = I just want to skate and go out there and be a killa! Am not even going to pretend the program makes any sense since PCS is over rated anyway!! Now watch this 3A!!! (<3A) :agree:
One thing I do want to add is the story of The Great Gatsby appears to shares many themes that perhaps can drew parallel's to Mirai's own journey as a figure skater, youngest US national champion, the most impressive 4th place Olympian Pirate Carmen. Jack Gatsby start from humble beginnings, an innocent, who fell in love with his ideal woman, went to war and then found out he as been discarded by his love. Then spend the rest of his life build up this facade to regain/revenge/impresses his love at the expense of personal happiness/cost and in the process the observer /reader perhaps realised such an ideal in reality can not possibly worthy of such pursuit and devotion, and that it is better just be his honest truthful self. The backdrop of all these is obviously America's capitalistic society, a force of such vitality and practicability greater than any individual merits that can be the kindest and cruelest in equal measures. I do want that happy ending though...

For me too, as I really enjoy watching Arakawa´s performance at the Olympics (and Worlds, too) now and then.
