2015-2016 Programs by Discipline

LP "The Unknown Known" soundtrack by Danny Elfman

As a Danny Elfman fan, I was not familiar with this soundtrack. Turns out it's from a documentary about former United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. I am not sure if anyone has ever skated to this before, it seems pretty obscure so good for them for not going for any warhorses. And added points for Annie Lennox in the short program.

Re: Ewan MacGregor from Moulin Rouge. Apparently Baz Luhrmann soundtracks are all the rage these days with the skaters, with The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge becoming warponies at this this point.

golden411 - for God's sake, indeed, I don't read every thread at this site and I definitely don't intend to remember them all - I was just joking. And I am fully aware that most skaters keep their maiden names, I have been watching this sport long enough. Relax then, OK?

I was  and am perfectly relaxed :).

So I hope that you will "Relax then, OK?"

Does anyone ever skate to originals of tunes? Ewan McGregor instead of Elton John? I've never even heard the Ewan McGregor version. And "I put a spell on you" by Annie Lenox or Nina Simone, but not the original by Screamin' Jay Hawkins?

Screamin' Jay's version might be a little hard to skate to, but if the costumes were true to his show, *that* would be a sight!

You did not watched Moulin Rouge? sacrilege

I know, I don't even know what Ashley was supposed to be portraying ... So sad!

You know what else (here's where I hope I don't totally highjack the thread); I've never seen Schindler's List! I don't even know what the red dress means:shocked: Josh's costume means as much to me as Julia's (more, since I watch far more of the men, and like Josh's routine better).

My skating fan credentials should be revoked:laugh2:

I turned off Moulin Rouge halfway through (it was a mess, imo, and I thought the singing was awful, sorry) and I will never watch Schindler's List because I have no attention span for long movies, especially depressing long movies. I also haven't seen Gone With The Wind. :slink: So whatever Polina does with it is ok by me.

Concerning Nathan Chen's Free Program music. I know the Saint Seans' 3rd includes organ, but I would swear that the last 20 seconds or so is the Poulenc Organ Concerto. Is anyone familiar/interested enough to confirm?

It shouldn't be an obligation to watch a movie only to understand a program. If well done, the program speaks for itself. That said, for people who do know the movie, a well choreographed program adds an extra dimension.

If a program is well choreographed, it makes me want to watch the movie/play/ballet/opera. And then there are the thousand Phantom of Opera's last year that made me elect not to go see the musical. (That and the fact that I cannot stand Christine. The Phantom is great, but she is so annoying--the exact opposite of Scarlett O'Hara).

Same with me. :slink: Someone said in another post not to "blame the music" for Polina's performance, but I don't get this feisty Scarlet character from the music, so I'm not quite sure how Polina is supposed to bring it to life. That being said, the music is quite striking and I enjoy listening to it.

To paraphrase my post elsewhere, I certainly do not have a trained ear, and completely subject to argument, but Nathan's program sounds like all Saint-Saens to me. It appears that he has cut the last two minutes of that wonderful third movement to fit his program:

(compare around 33 or 34, to me it sounds as though they have cut the music to match Nathan's final spin. If they have, I think they have done a pretty good job).

Yep, it is the Saint Seans. I remembered it from Paul Wylie https://youtu.be/8nLhA7CVIok?t=257 and mixed it up with an earlier program where he used Poulenc. Thanks for the efforts.

Same with me. :slink: Someone said in another post not to "blame the music" for Polina's performance, but I don't get this feisty Scarlet character from the music, so I'm not quite sure how Polina is supposed to bring it to life. Yes, exactly, LOL. On the other hand Scarlett showed to the world a sweet face for quite some time.

As one who is more familiar with the book than the movie, I always considered the true "heroine" of GWTW to be not Scarlett but the love of land/tradition (Tara) and the enduring strength of characters such as Melanie, Mammy and Scarlett's mother. (The male characters, not so much.) When I hear the romantic/nostalgic music, I really don't think of Scarlett as much as I think of that beautiful barbecue scene at the beginning. Really, Polina's "look" fits right in with the Wilkes women from that scene. I hope she doesn't in any way try to suggest a portrayal of Scarlett.

I Put A Spell on You for Ksenia and Fedor? How does that work when they barely look at each other?

I have NEVER seen Ksenia and Fedor skate, so I am basing my comments on comments.

Maybe the original version of the song, by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who truly was "putting a spell" on you, would fit this pair better?
