That's the biggest mystery, she trains with coach Chi Hyunjung in Korea and with Tammy Gambil in Colorado but she hasn't been in Japan recently. I don't know whether that's because of the pandemic or she isn't with Hamada Mie anymore, I don't think anybody else does either.

I suppose. I wondered who all are still with Hamada, because even Rika left her and went to TCC (ISU bio remains without update, as it still lists Lambiel and Hamada, not Orser or some other TCC coach).

Young's bio does not list Hamada.

To be honest, it was impossible for Young to be coached in 3 different countries when there is a pandemic going on. Japan doesnt even send their junior to gp events, they certainly would not allow Young to be in and out of the country without quarantining, which is impossible to do in the middle of olympic season since everyone would cherish every little time they have for training. I think, staying in the US is for the best for her right now. They could call other technical specialist to come and help her with her UR. I dont think Young would do well with zoom coaching.

But it made me curious though, when does Tammy Gambill seems to be the international coach destination for a lot of Korean women single skaters ? Even the ones representing the US like Audrey Shin and Clare Seo who both ethnically Korean, chose her.

I mean, honestly, maybe there are some great Korean restaurants in Colorado Springs, it's definitely not because of the coaching, that's for certain.

I think the main problem for me is that she’s switching not just between who‘s her main coach - from Tom to Mie to Gambil to Chi, but also she had to travel between counties so much in recent years. I don’t see how that can positively impact her performance, in fact, I think it’s hurting her more. Similar to Rika.
Maybe she can try Orser? And then just stick to it.

Pretty sure its because of the pandemic, she wanted to go to Hamada but was stuck in Korea all last year. And now Japan's mandatory 2 week quarantine, it would still be incredibly hard to train there and compete internationally all season.

Rika wasn't traveling a lot. She was training with Lambiel in Champery for some six months, till Japanese Nationals in December, and after the Nationals she stayed in Japan with Hamada. So her only travel in a year's time was a flight back to Japan. I don't know Young's training schedule but don't think any similar to Rika's would hurt her.

I don't think so. She was coached exclusively by Hamada for years. ( Although, she would go to Colorado to get choreography from Tom Dickson or his ex-wife).

She used to go to Ghislain + Tom Dickson, yes.

Maybe the traveling is hurting her. Mind you, Tom to Mie + Gambill probably wasn't a choice (Gambill still in Colorado Springs, and the collaboration that Gambill has with Hamada was not Young's idea either), and Chi certainly wasn't a choice, it was due to the pandemic.

Personally, I just don't understand the strategy of Gambill + Hamada. Hamada works on presentation... what does Gambill work on? Not making sure her skaters do well? That's the only thing I can think of with her.

Young also used to train jumps with Ghislain, IIRC. I hope she can go back and do that.

Ghislaine came to Champery for summer camps several years in a row and she didn't need to go to Toronto to train with him). And Rika was going overseas for choreo, but that doesn't mean 'training'?...

Just getting OT on this thread, but she for sure trained with Ghislain. Yeah, it's not "training" in the same sense, but it's still a lot of traveling in a season. Rika used to be in Dickson's camp for a long period even mid-season sometimes (IIRC).

Well, as the infamous song Feelin' Good goes, you know how I feel Just, what an excellent senior debut, and after missing out on the JGP circuit due to boot issues and injuries at that. I'm extremely proud of her, meanwhile I'm so going to die during Olympic selections

I must throw in my appreciation of Yeonjeong Park's skating basics btw. Korean skaters always show great musical sensitivity, but the overwhelming majority of them impress me with the most basic stuff, like the landing positions, the timing of their jump and how they achieve their vault, even knowing how to vary their flow and speed out of the jump depending on the music... Nearly every Korean coach seems to know their stuff when it comes to that.

Wow i just realized sihyeong lee is 185 cm ? I know that he looks long on the ice, but idk he is that tall. That is a very tall height for single skater.
