2026 Olympics Team Event speculation

I am not sure, unless something has changed since 2018. I remember listening to a team member from Canada - maybe Meagan Duhamel - discuss why they only split one discipline and by doing that, left Weaver and Poje off the team. They had to enter the skaters for the team event in advance, therefore effectively leaving teams without the opportunity to make last minute changes based on the results of the short program.
They had to do it after the SP day. By then, it was too close to call so they entered V.M. When the dance portion came by, it would have not mattered to have Weapo... but it was impossible to change.

The team thatcwin depend on skate.
For example Fear / Gibson. Skates the team won't win, but can mess up team medalist by placing ahead of tem skaters that on team to win. Same thing for Korea man,
For me italy has the best if chock and bates don't skate, france in running if ilia doesn't they have Kevin. And Adam.
Jason while goid can beat beat by one or both, and the Italians.

It depends on what the mature skaters think best medal chance like
Chock and Bates, Giles and Poirer, Fear and Gibson, have and holding, Mura and Kihara Hase and Voldin, Stellato and dudes, kam she howe .
Lot of pairs and dance teams are more mature.
Would they want to do both singles and teams
Would it benefit them to both or eve. Singles that are more expected to medal o. The individuals round and not team

Both Amelia and Eugene won't be able to do team
So will ilia, kaori , Adam, Yuma want to do both
Lara has a. Outside shot but best chance is team ascwirh Daniel or Matteo.
Gunnar and fabri has a chance at a medal.
Will Cizeron and his partner willing possible to give up ogm for team.
Giles and poirer has chance at individuals medal will give it up for team.

The federation look at best chance medal.
Italy is best chance at team, France isn't behind. Japan , Korea, all have chance at team medal

Us has shot at bot ilia is more expected to bring home gold. Chock and bates more likely but heavy competition with France Italy and some from Canada and great Britain.
The women more likely Amelia or kaori or even alysa in the mix. Also isabeau, amber, mone, ami chaeyeon jia, Anastasia or possibly Lara.
Prioritize which oly medals where. Which way easiest for countries or federation to receive those Olympic 🏅

I can see u.s. not medal in team event
I can see italy france japan .depends on who skates and who doesn't
Will the older skaters want to risk their chance at medals for team or

I do not subscribe AT ALL to the notion that Team Event medals are meaningless to the athletes. That flies in the face of common sense.

It's an OLYMPIC MEDAL for goodness sake! A physical token of their moment on the podium. I'm sure they'll treasure that for a lifetime, perhaps even pass down to their children. Does Nathan Chen value his Team Medal as much as his Individual Medal? Probably not, but I bet he hasn't tossed it in the rubbish bin either.

Remember that many Olympians who will never get within proper eyeshot of the medal stand will permanently mark their bodies by tattooing the Olympic rings on their persons. The Olympics mean that much. A "meaningless" Olympic medal? I don't think so.

Edit: And remember, a chance to skate on Olympic ice means something. Vincent Zhou is an Olympic Champion because he skated the Team Event, and otherwise he'd never have even gotten to perform at the Olympics because of Covid.

If they split dance, then that means either one woman or one man will have to skate both. I don't see Ilia or USFSA wanting him to do both - of the USA Gold Medal possibilities, his is far the strongest IMO. And both women mentioned have medal chances.... so, I don't know.
To me, it cuts both ways. In both ice dance and men's, the U.S. number one is (a) many IJS points ahead of #2 and (b) a favorite in their individual disciplines as well. If the USFSA wants to go all out for team gold, they would go with Malinin in both segments, C&B in both segments, and split either one or both of ladies and pairs. Although Alysa Liu is in the running for individual honors, the #2 lady -- presumably Amber or Isabeau -- could hold the fort in team if called upon.

On the other hand, if it is really true that doing the team event and then the individual a few days later is too exhausting, then they (the USFSA) would not want to do anything to dampen their front-running individual stars' chances.

On the third hand :), the one argument that I don't think will come into play is, let's give our popular everybody-likes-him guy a chance to get a medal out of the kindness of our hearts (leaving out somebody else who is less everybody-likes him). It's cut-throat time, lol.

I'll add on the athletes who are filling the additional athlete quotas and will only be competing in the Team Event. It's their chance to participate and an experience they'll value, even if for some of them their experience will end after the short program/rhythm dance.

To me the Team Event has 3 interesting battles within:-

- Gold medal should be between USA and Japan. I think USA are favourites but it'll be close.
- Bronze will likely be between Italy and Georgia, with the home team favourites
- Canada and France will be fighting to make free and have an outside chance of a medal if they pick their strongest team across both segments. Canada will come out on top as they probably care more than the French and will maximise their chances.

In terms of people deciding to split events or not do Team Event at all to save themselves for their individual event then to me it's only an issue for Dance and Men due to the schedule. There is plenty of time to recover for the Pairs and Women's.

For Dance the Georgians, Italians and Japanese have to skate both. I think US will give Chock and Bates the choice and I could see their decision going either way. They seem like team players so they could do both segments but they may sit out the Free. I think the French will also be given the choice but feels like they will most likely skip it completely. The French Federation have always given Guillaume free reign to do what he wants and I don't see that changing. He and Gabi skipped team event in 2018 and also skipped Worlds in 2021 which cost them an opportunity to qualify another French Dance team. I actually think doing the RD at least might help rather than harm their chances as they are still a new team so every competition helps at this point. Piper and Paul doing the Free will probably depend on results, if medal chances are not likely then LaLa may do Free Dance.

I expect USA and Japan to split men's with Yuma and Ilia doing short and Jason & Shin doing Free. Grassl will probably get asked to do both. I think French will also give Adam the choice but I think he'll do short with Kevin doing the Free if they qualify.

I don't see any team splitting Pairs. Japan will split women's. USA will if Chock/Bates double up with Alysa getting the nod if Dance is split.

I would be in favour of the team event being eliminated altogether if they're not willing to fix the obvious flaw with the LP weighting. The way it is right now makes no sense.

It's OK.They could double up the points given to placements for the LP, or graduate them in steps of two from 2 to 10 instead of in steps of one from 6 to 10. But there is really no a prior reason for putting heavier weight on the LP than on the SP, just because it is longer.

I think that they did it this way to avoid embarrassing the weak skater who was so bad that he contributed only 1 point for his team in the SP and 2 points in the LP. At least this way, he gets 6 points the LP (by giving everyone 5 extra points for nothing. ;) )

As for eliminating the team event altogether, I think that would be a ,mistake. The team event is, I think, slowly (glacially) building relevance. Maybe one day it will surpass, in terms of fan interest, the individual medals. In gymnastics, for instance, we Americans can hardly name the individual members of the Magnificent Seven or the Fierce Five, but we swell with patriotic pride over their team gold medals.

But there is really no a prior reason for putting heavier weight on the LP than on the SP, just because it is longer.
Wouldn't you say how they contribute to the total scores for any individual skater in the individual event is a good a priori reason to change the weighting of the rankings in the team event?

I think i vaguely remember that this is still the rule.

Teams have to submit their entry ahead of time. Who’s doing SP and LP.

I think that totaling up the scores SP+LP for skaters int he individual events is OK. I think that averaging ordinals, weighted or unweighted, like in 6.0 was OK. too. Neither of these has any a priori justification that I can see, only a utilitarian one.

Another way to do the team thing would be like this. For the SP, use the raw IJS scores to select the top five teams that will move on to the finals. (No reason to assign any extra place markers like 1, 2, 3.) Now give place-holder points 1 through 5 on each discipline to the survivors for the SP, and then let them compete for another 1 thought 5 more in the LP.

Or even better, give them markers 101 to 105 for each segment, resulting in more impressive scores all the way around. We scored 429 placement points in the team competition! USA! USA! USA!

LOL.

You know, I've often wondered about the "endurance" argument. These skaters do run-throughs every day in hours-long practices, and they're in phenomenal shape -world class athletes. I bet skating the program is actually less exhausting than all the pre-skating frippery - hair and makeup, costume tweaks, all that stuff. I would HATE all that, and the mental energy involved in not killing someone must be immense. I bet it would be a lot easier if they could just roll out of bed, grab a light breakfast, shuttle to the rink, and skate their programs after stretching and a short warmup.
To me it's not so much about the physical toll of an Olympic performance as it is about the mental and, most importantly, emotional.

Ilia has already said he's not doing both and would want to do the sp. Bock I think could go either way. If they think it will interfere with their chance at winning the individual gold, they will definitely split it. I'm sure they're all team players, but ultimately, the ones who are favorites for the gold in the individual events aren't going to jeopardize their chances for the team event, and the USFS would be silly to force them to (and I'm sure the USFS would gladly take two individual gold medals over gold in the team event).

I think the chances are much more likely that skaters are clamoring for a spot on a team event roster than trying to dodge the opportunity, at least among the medal favorites.

Choosing which skaters do both segments is part of the larger team/federation strategy. Otherwise, I don't know why the IOC/ISU would have limited substitutions to two disciplines. The feds are being forced to make hard decisions. And while I don't think it will happen, I absolutely think that Ilia would answer the call of duty if he was being pegged to do both team segments. He could easily deliver a watered-down team event free program and still win (or at least come very close) the placement battle.

I still think from a strategic standpoint, Team USA needs the maximum gap with Japan in the dance segments, and that means Chock and Bates skate both. Ice is slippery and all that, but among the consensus finalists, the USA #2 could lose placements to the Canadians, the Italians, and the Georgians - picking up only one point on the Japanese, rather than a potential four.

And, hey, remember the year of the Canadian legends in the Team Event? V/M skated both segments, I think, and then turned around and whooped P/C in both segments of the individual event to waltz away with two golds. They were experienced professionals, and they managed those demands just fine, thank you. It's not like Chock and Bates are dewy-eyed ingenues. They'll understand what is required.

I think that that top individual gold medal contenders are likely to prioritise that over the team event. Which is why I would be surprised if Ilia Malinin did both segments.

An olympic team medal is very impressive- but I'm not sure it's viewed as being quite so prestigious as an individual medal would be in the eyes of the skaters. Competing one program in team is a chance to skate on olympic ice before the main event and get a shot a team medal/help out the team.

It sounds like FB/C are planning to skip it and I wouldn't be surprised if others do so as well. The benefit of this is that this could give other skaters (who are unlikely to medal individually) a more realistic chance of a medal too. I was wondering if Miura/Kihara (possibly Sakamoto) might do this or at least want to split it.

They most likely won't make it to the final five... so who would they send for the SP ?
France won't make it to the final five without Laurence and Cizerone. I think they should do the short. Mens short is a hard call. Both Adam and Kevin can be great or bomb the short. Adam is stronger in the free. But lately Kevin is stronger in the short. If there is no chance to make the final, I think Kevin will be asked to do the short as Adam has potential to medal in the individual. Again, what does everyone think?
