Hyping up young skaters before they deserved it?

Caroline Zhang, anyone?

This is ALMOST correct. Wasn't Caroline Junior World Champion? My problem with Caroline was that her coaches didn't fore her to get rid of her bad technique sooner. She learned how to "Save" her jumps in spite of her technique and I wish the judges had told her coaches to fix it BEFORE they made her World Champion.

She is very talented. When I first saw Nathan Chen and Karen Chen I saw future world and Oly medalists. Then Russia exploded. I suspect with all the parents in Korea try to mold the next Yuna Kim we will see a few more child phenoms. Skating is so crazy now no one can stay on top. At11 it's fun. By age 15 she may hate the pressure and quit. Orser said when Yuna came to him she did not enjoy skating. I think we saw that. Her mother pushed her all the time. This girl may be a future world and or Olympic medalist. If so great but people she is a child of 11. I hope she isn't pressured by Korea the way Yuna was. Yuna doesn't even do shows anymore she is so done with skating. That's too bad for her fans.

Huh...so she's visiting the ice rinks everyday and helps the youngsters training because she's so done with the skating, right? lol
Her mom's push? I've read a couple of times that her mom had seriously considered quitting when she was still in Juniors, and when Yuna would say she's going to quit during practices, never did she stop her, just let her be, and Yuna would come back to practices, on her own, several days after.
Yuna has said the trainings had been painful, that she never wants to go through it again, but I think no one can blame her, knowing the skating condition in Korea.
They don't even have a proper ice rink for figure skating, what can you expect?

Over-hype? I think this Young You girl needs some hype, it's only then the KSU will give her, or figure skating, any serious attention.
Even after winning the nationals, she's still having problems with where to practice...
As a Korean, I'm really glad to see a young skater full with confidence.
After watching So-Youn this past year, I think what the Korean skaters need is the self-confidence and belief in themselves, that they can actually do it.
Yuna is working hard on maintaining public attention on figure skating, except the exaggerating ones, I don't believe some articles will be any harm to Young.

We cannot really tell someone's future body type at 11, unless that person is already stocky looking. But she seems to be a spontaneous jumper, who does not need to "think" much before each jump. I'd say unless there is a major body change in 5 years, she should be the best Korean skater and world top 6. Her jumps are probably better than Mao at the same age.

I did not know Yuna still haunts rinks and teaches. With the Olympics in two yearsit makes sense. But she doesn't do shows since 2014. Does she go skating a lot? I heard she doesn't. She is right this kid has better spins and spirals. I don't know who was better jumper at that age. We have seen little kids spin like tops and jumping beans with no fear.

We will see but she is great now and fun to watch and she has an amazing role model who likely will help her if needed. I enjoyed watching her twice. She does have an advantage being Asian when she hits puberty.

Here are some of the broadcast videos of the Korean babies! (Taken from the Korean Nationals thread. Extra thanks to Hailey Shin!)

Enjoy watching~ :)

Personally, I like Eun Soo's jumps a lot more than Young's although I enjoy Young's performance a lot more. Eun Soo's jumps are very Yuna-esque in terms of height and distance.

Eun Soo and Ye Lim will be debuting in the JGP next season. It will be very exciting to see how they stack up against the Russian and Japanese babies. :luv17:

Oh, thank you. More links and less arguing, please!

I recall reading articles like that about Yuna. The press loves prodigies and people love reading about them. Who knows, maybe she enjoyed the attention.

Cute choreography! Some shimmy as well! Work it girl and enjoy your youth! Time will only tell and much can and will happen to her body and attitude. As long as she becomes herself and not the next 'Yu-Na', she'll be OK.

I like last year's choreography better than this year's LP, and it appears to me she was also quite dedicated to her choreography last year. Maybe if she had less mascara or fake eyelash this year, her actual emotion would be better visible.

I am also curious who coached her in Singapore before she moved back to South Korea. We have't really seen any Singaporean skaters except at 4CC and they are mostly likely US born and trained in the US.

She was featured in Japanese TV yesterday (I couldn't watch unfortunately).
It seems it was reported that before she started to work with a coach three years ago, she learned jumps by herself while watching Yuna's videos :reye: Not sure if she really didn't have any coaching at all though. I love how much she dedicates herself to this sport.

I think it'll be interesting to see how this young skater develops. If Korea can put out another couple strong skaters from now to 2018, that will be good for their skating federation. Since I do follow Korean media via dramas and K-pop, I think it is safe to say that Korean media and many people hold Yu-na up at a higher pedestal than even the most celebrities(and celebrities dominate a large part of mainstream Korean culture from my observations). In a video I watched, one of the most famous groups, Super Junior, was in awe of meeting Yu-na. So, to put it simply, I hope the media and federation don't put too too much pressure. Nowadays, it can be overwhelming dealing with the task of all the technical elements, not to mention the national spotlight. Fighting, Young You!

I have a feeling that the new up-and-coming young Korean skaters are going to overtake Japan in a few years. I personally will probably enjoy Korean skaters better since their jumps don't rely on extreme knee bend or super fast rotations as many young Japanese skaters do.
