What's So Great About American Idol?

My friend refuses to watch American Idol because he thinks it's a mean concept--seeing people with dreams getting publically slammed on TV.
This is probably the reason I won't watch.

I'm sure the people who watch AI will agree with me one this==
look at Clay when he went in for his first audition-what he looked like--Randy said he couldn't understand where the voice came from--then all the way thru Clay took the judges coments and suggestions to heart and kept on improving and look where he is now==he made it=he is on his way=he has a great voice=he is going to go far.

This season is different from the last two==not as much talent=but still good to watch= Latoya is my favorite this year.

It is like any other show you either like it or you don't and I"m on the side that does and will watch it again next year if it is on again. Oh, and I'm over 40 so every age group likes the show.

Give them credit getting up in front of millions of people to follow a dream=I do.

yeah but save for movie night the judges never really gave Clay all that much attention LOL that was positive anyway

HOWEVER

Latoya is getting it now and I think she's the female version of Clay... not in appearance... but the vocal gymnastics... and for that reason teh judges love her? I think what's turning people off this season are the inconsistancies within the judges... BUT thinking all the way through... they've learned from year to year what America seems to want...

It's better than the Apprentice?

Mathman!!!! I loved the apprentice!!!! I think it was the most original of all the reality shows out there, they are so similar they run together at this point.

This is exactly why I watch it.

;)

And Mathman, it is SO obvious you have never worked in an office. Academic politics don't count. "The Apprentice" should be mandatory viewing--no, make it a mandatory participatory course for anyone going into business, advertising, finance, anything that's going to put them in an office environment. Six weeks (or however many it was) of having to deal with Omarosa alone is worth three years of college. Anyone who's ever worked in an office knows that, eventually, there's an Omarosa in every one.

About the Apprentice, the local television station here is running a knockoff called "The Intern."

The prize is, you get to be a summer intern in the law offices of goofball lawyer Jeffrey Feiger -- a political gadfly (he was the Democratic nominee for governor a few years back) who is known for his silly courtroom dramatics (he first became famous as the defense lawyer for Dr. Kevorkian, who was sentenced to prison some years ago for assissting people to commit suicide).

The contestants have to do physical stunts along the lines of the Real World against Road Rules. The whole show comes on as a news segment during the 11:00 news.

Frankly, I'm finding this season of AI to be a snoozefest. I'm not rooting for anyone. No one seems to improving as each week progresses - lots of up and downs, but no one's taking the lead. It's like watching a race amongst nags. JMHO.

The previous seasons of AI were Cinderella stories. Amateur gets chance to seek dream. At the beginning, there are so many - a couple may stand out, but the winner is not obvious. Once the final 10 are picked, it becomes a horse race. During AI 1, Tamayra started out strong and then stumbled. Kelly started out back with the pack, but moved up as each week progressed. Sorry, can't come up with a reason for Gaurini's 2nd place finish. During AI2, Ruben was endearing. Clay was the 'swan' story from geek to idol. Kim Locke - again, she started as the back of the pack and moved in for a strong finish.

As for Simon, I agree with him most of the time. He's harsh, but so is the industry and fans are fickly. If anything, his criticism/advice will help the performer get a thicker skin and/or improve. At least Randy can give some advice, too - but Paula's too much the cheerleader. No producer will be so nurturing after so many weeks of ok performances.

So, why do I watch? Hope to see the 1st glimmer of superstar and also because there isn't anything else on that appeals to me on Tuesday nights.
