Women's Artistic Gymnastics

reading that interview now, and wow she is ambitious coming back doing the AA! i thought she'd be maybe a bar and beam specialist. good for her, that takes some SERIOUS guts after not touching a piece of equipment for 6 years. it sounds like she is truly doing this for herself and her enjoyment, not results. best of luck to her, i'm so excited to see her compete again. i can't believe the olympics are this summer.

ETA the link if anyone else is interested in reading: https://www.insidegymnastics.com/ne...rt-revitalized-gabby-douglas-eyes-paris-2024/

She WD from Winter Cup due to Covid and then immediately changed gyms. The rumor mill is working overtime. I say she's a grown woman and knows what she needs to do.

i saw that too, it's very interesting to say the least. it's a bit funky for sure, but i agree Gabby is an adult and can make her own decisions.

i'm getting a strange feeling about Gabby's comeback, apparently she was not selected for the team camp coming up and i haven't heard a peep since she withdrew from the winter cup. her opportunities are running out quick, does she even have an opportunity to make nationals at this point? it's starting to not look so good.

There are a lot of conspiracy theories flying around about USA Gym trying to shut her out - I don't know that I buy it. There were criteria set about who they would invite and she didn't meet them. When they SET those criteria, I don't know.
American Classic at the end of April is her last shot to qualify to Championchips.

i don't think it's likely but to be honest, i don't put it past them after what they did to Chellsie Memmel in 2012, but i don't believe Chellsie to be the kind of person to do to another athlete what was done to her. if that is happening, i have no idea who in the org would be responsible. how would she be selected for the American Classic?

Here are results from American Classic on 4/27. From what I’ve been reading, Gabby did well enough to qualify to Nationals. I don’t know if this means she’ll also be at Core Classic. Jade’s AA score (with some routines not at full difficulty) would have put her 5th at last year’s Nationals, so she’s definitely in the Olympic picture. Suni and Joscelyn did selected events & not AA.

Looking at some photos from Classics podium training today. Choosing an Olympic team this year is going to be IMPOSSIBLE! Honestly, I know the US is always pretty stacked with depth, but there are easily a dozen women who could combine any number of ways to make a Gold Medal winning team. I cannot IMAGINE having to make this decision.
Simone, Suni, Gabby, Leanne, Jordan, Jade, Joscelyn, Skye, Kayla, Shilese, Konnor, Kayliya (Trinity and Tiana, too). This is a ridiculous amount of talent.

Build your own team. Have fun. I’m taking Leanne and her toe point and I will die on this hill.

Leanne is unfortunate to represent a country whose governing body's preferences do not align her strengths. US gymnastics favours power over everything else. Like Riley McCusker before her, Leanne would have fared much better in Europe where her artistry would be valued.

It's behind a paywall, but I think this would be my team:
Simone, Shilese, Jade, Suni, then Jordan/Leanne as either the 5th member or the alternate. Sentimental me wants Gabby to knock it out of the park at Champs and make me question this.
I subscribe. I should be able to gift it though.
Gabby has withdrawn and is concentrating on 2028. I think she started this comeback at least 6 months too late.
But 2028 yes! Let’s keep the women in women’s gymnastics.

I was very happy to see she was planning to continue! Good for her, and good for US!

sad to hear Gabby was injured, but i agree she returned to competition too soon. i'm really happy she's continuing on, i can't wait to see what kind of form she'll be in next season. wishing her a successful comeback.

and congrats to Simone on her 9th AA US title! she is just unreal. Like Sam Peszek said, you run out of words to describe her. the olympic team is going to be SO hard to pick, the field is so deep and i want all of them to go lol. at least there is one more gymnast on the team this year. here are my picks:

3 up, 3 count: Simone, Shilese, Kayla/Skye/Jade
Beam & Bars: Suni
Vault & Floor: Jade/Skye
Alternates: Kayla/Skye, Jordan, Leanne

Honestly i think the 3rd 3 up, 3 count spot is really up for grabs. Skye Blakely is not playing games out here and she could even be picked as Vault/Floor if Jade is picked for AA. Kayla has been looking really good and it would be heartbreaking for her to be an alternate again. I don't see Jordan making it, she's not as sharp as 2021. I would be heartbroken for Leanne too if she was named alternate, but it's clear there are others who would be a better pick.

Also, poor Konnor McClain. she has to be so so heartbroken, i just want to give her a hug...i don't know if she would want to wait around yet another four years. she has been injured so much and has been through so much.

random question...what happened to Nastia on NBC? did her contract run out?

I was wondering as well.

well, trials was certainly quite depressing with so many girls injured...i'm so incredibly sad for Kayla, Shilese and Skye. i can't imagine what this has been like for them...those girls, especially Shilese has been through so much the last cycle. i wish all of them quick recoveries and successful comebacks.

anyway, what a team it shook out to be. 3 olympic champions, and 4 returning olympians for the first time since 1952 (!!!). that's truly incredible.

(reminds me of some Korean FS story)

[sry if that's the wrong thread, feel free to move it]
I thought the same when I saw it on a UK news site today. From what I read, it sounded like she wasn't coping with the pressure of the olympics, though, and there was no indication of there being any potential sexual misconduct.
