I've repeatedly stated that if she wasn't able to compete safely then she absolutely made the right decision. I reaffirm that here and now.

I've also asked exactly what constitutes a mental health concern, as opposed to competitive stress and general nervousness. That's not an unreasonable question.

I don't know what sites you visit where keyboard warriors advocate "sucking it up" even though it meant breaking your neck, but it's not one I frequent, and I certainly don't agree with that point of view.
She apparently posted a story to her IG explaining. She has what gymnasts call “the twisties” which is a disconnect between her brain and her body. If you listen to John Rothlesburger and Bridget Sloan doing commentary, they recognized she did not know where she was in the air. That’s extremely dangerous. She was lucky she landed that vault on her feet and not her face or head.
In order to fix it she needs to go back to a foam pit (gymnasts learn skills landing in a big pit of foam blocks). She doesn’t have access to that in Tokyo.
During qualifying she made all 4 event finals. She did not make the bars final in Rio. She’s the first one to do that since Shannon Miller.

Here’s the article. https://www.nbcboston.com/news/spor...twisties-answers-questions-instagram/2448411/

Well, NBC is a private corporation with a duty to its shareholders to maximize profits. That is its only duty. So I am not going to impose duties on them that they do not have.

Should the IOC/Organizing Committee insist on different times, even if it means
Less money from NBC?
No money from NBC?
No money to stage the events, whatever those times may be?

That is a decision for the IOC and for the LOC. Not NBC's problem, not their issue, not their duty. 🤷‍♀️
What is the problem here is that Olympics are made for the athletes who actually compete, not for you and me (or NBC) commenting on them. I don't care about corporations duties, but i know that every person's duty is to be the best human he/she/they possibly can, which sometimes means putting other needs before your own. And Olympics are not the game about who is the best/most influential network/person in the world and their profits/agendas, that's for sure.

The IOC and the local organizing committee need money to stage the games as they are now. Lots of money.

They have chosen to accept the offer of money from corporate sponsors and broadcasters, along with the conditions on those offers. If athletes want to protest, and say they don’t want the corporate sponsors’ or broadcasters‘ money to stage the Games,, which of course will come with conditions as sponsors and broadcasters are not charitable enterprises, then it is up to the athletes or their feds to do it.

And they will need to find another source of the funds needed to stage the Olys. If they want to do that, God bless them, and I hope they find it.

now back to gymnastics :)

In terms of the current Games using your statement, its not like the athletes are exactly altruistic, or are they so wrapped up in their own sporting world that they failed to notice that there is a virus going around and that the citizens of host country of the Olympics don't want the Games there because of the virus, the Olympians 'duty' you speak of would have been to have refused to go the Games...but that would affect their ability to be in contention for medals and prizes (money) that come with them...so guess what, they went to Japan regardless of the feelings of the people of Japan and some of them are now even complaining about the measures that Japan has taken to limit the impact of the virus.

There is nothing wrong for the athletes to complain if the situation looks wrong to them personally. I was watching women track and field last day - long jump, pole vault and discus competition, and it was just sad all around. Sad for the athletes. You can watch it, and you will see what im talking about. I'm also sad for Japan losing their money. I'm also sad for all of us dealing with the virus. I'm also sad for Simone Biles and Novak Djokovic and all the other sport's stars because of 'the obligation' to explain their actions to the others... And for those (who need 'an explanation') i'm not sad at all.,,

They knew what the situation was going to be prior to ever arriving in Japan, - no spectators and barred from leaving the Olympic village except for events and could have easily bowed out of attending the games. But they didn't so they should have some level of common decency to act gracious towards Japan, who probably should have (and likely would have if they could have afforded the financial hit) closed their borders and said they would not host the games.

so which Olympians do you think we will see again? who will be done? who are the next names in line coming up? i am most familiar with the US gymnasts so i'll focus on them...

Simone is done. i think there's a slight chance for her to want to be a specialist in a couple years, but for now i'm counting her as retired.
I have a feeling Suni won't come back as she has already started college life, as much as i want her to. i think she has a couple more years left in her and i'd like to see her have more success on the world stage.
Mykayla is obviously done, as she has said. the way Jordan has talked i think she is done also.
Jade is a possibility i suppose, although she has an Olympic gold now.
Grace is probably the most likely out of the US team to come back, although no idea.

for other countries, I'm sure Andrade is done now that she has two olympic medals. i'd say the same for Melnikova too. the Wever sisters, Steingruber, Seitz and Black i'd be surprised to see again. they've been on the scene a long time. Derwael could stick around.

i think lots of new names will come out this next quad! who are you looking forward to seeing?

Leanne Wong has been named to the US Worlds team. Wish I knew how to post pics as I’m currently at the GOAT tour (in between the end of the Chalk Talk and the beginning of the show). It’s very gold, glittery and me😂😂😂

Per the Internet Rebecca isn’t competing the AA. I hope no injury.

I have no idea how the whole process works (as far as I understood there‘s not even a team competition at this year's Worlds?) but I‘m looking forward to seeing Urazova, Melnikova, Andrade and Murakami again. I read somewhere Urazova wouldn't compete the AA, which is a shame, imo, since this could be her best shot at a medal. Especially since neither Andrade nor Murakami seem to be doing it either…🤔

Urazova did AA and qualified for the AA final (and bars and floor)!

Gymnastics is really weird. They do the team competition one year (and unlike the Olympics the alternate gets a medal even if she doesn’t compete, so Mykayla is a World Champion). The next year they do all the individual events. It hasn’t always been that way but it has been for awhile Now.
