Women's FS - 2022 Olympics: Thoughts?

Maybe none of that will matter though if an investigation can bring certain details to light (terrible odds of this happening, but can wish), and we will instead have Kaori Sakamoto retroactively named the Olympic Champion. Congrats also to Silver medalist Wakaba Higuchi and Bronze medalist Young You if that happens! The podium sweep ends up being Jorea (Kapan?), historic!

Whether Kaori wins gold or bronze medal, whether she's officially declared Olympic Champion or not, I think most people can see and understand "the situation" -- Kaori Sakamoto is the best skater of her generation. I don't expect anything to change except maybe Valieva DQ, but really feel bad for Waka and Young You because they should have Olympic silver and bronze medals.

You know... some people have rightfully said that Osmond is the Olympic champion in 2018 ;)

Reflecting on the women's competition afterwards (wasn't in much of a mood when it ended :(), I've been wondering if it ever happened in figure skating to have the top two skaters tied, and thus two gold medals winners ? I know it has happened a few times in rhythmic gymnastics for example.

I think it would have been much more fair here. Anna deserved to win for skating smart, emotional and clean (but should have had her edges, footwork and spins issues called accordingly), and Sasha also deserved to win for skating strong, fearless and with raw athletic power (but had to sacrifice overall cleanliness and artistic expression, at least in the FS - her SP is still one of my favourite women's programs this season and it's the best she ever had). They both did so well, both had the skates of their lives, and for different reasons - these skates were the culmination of their senior career (so far), and I wish the individuality of their skating styles was more acknowledged and rewarded, for the both of them.

That's what brought me to figure skating in the first place : I liked to see some girls skate like ice princesses, some like snow warriors, and some be the "full package". It's the diversity of approaches, the different styles of artistry, the athleticism that makes this sport so entertaining to watch. It pains me that the sport is unable to admit that two people can't win the day because they both excelled each at one different side of figure skating, but that they are discussing whether or not to have artistic and technical programs instead. That's pretty sad...

For some reason Figure Skating hates ties, they have like four kinds of tie breakers in the rare situation that a tie happens.

Here's some info on it: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISU_Judging_System

Interestingly enough under this system had there been a tie Sasha would have won as she came first in the free skate.

Once again I am amazed what a tremendous part the luck plays in sport. We had 3As + Kamila destined to dominate in women's FS. Two of them - Alena K. & Kamila I consider to be a total package, Sasha is a quad Queen, Anna I see as a girl with nerves of steel (very commendable) but otherwise a skater with mediocre jumps & spins and atrocious SS. And yet Anna is the one with the World & Olympic title !?:scratch2:
I never thought I would say it but I now think that Adelina was a very worthy Olympic champion. Her SS were excellent, jumps huge and spins great, she also skated her Olympic LP with freedom and abandon. None applies to our new Oly champion, Anna's fans I do ask for your forgiveness for saying this. I do admire Anna's cool and efficient demeanour and the way she handled the pressure. But I just cannot watch her feet when she skating it is just :palmf:
Talent just not enough it seems...

@Tutto I wouldn't say Adelina had excellent SS, but she did get more power in the stroke and yep the performance was more genuine. Anna's program is frenetic nonsense, just all kinds of arms and legs flying everywhere constantly, without creating coherent pictures and with little reflection of the music. The only program of hers that's ever been great IMO is the Long Program at Nationals last season. That performance had magic in it.

Overall Anna's skating is kind of like a combination of a ballerina and a cockroach. Everything she does has this very trained kind of attempt at elegance and movement, but the refinement and soul isn't there, she's constantly skittering from one thing to the next, like a fleeing insect. Yeah she usually emotes more than Trusova and has a better body position on average, but this is not the kind of skating that should be highly rewarded. In the absence of either of them doing anything artistically relevant, Trusova probably deserves to have the better legacy, because of what she's done athletically, even though Shcherbakova is usually the one winning because of being cleaner and a bit more presentable.

Not surprised that Valieva self-destructed---the attention and pressure on her was too much for her to handle. I don't imagine she'll get much sympathy from ET and company because from their point of view, Kamila let them down. As if.

I hope Kamila can find better coaching. She deserves a chance at redemption. OTOH, maybe ET and crew will get what they deserve....
Do you think they'll let her go to Worlds?

Since scores are given to an accuracy of hudredths of a point, a tie would be pretty rare statistically. The only time I remember it happening in a major event is 2008 U.S. Nationals, when Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir both ended with 277.77 points. Lysacek was declared the winner on the first tie-breaker (the long program). But later it came to light that the computer program that averaged the scores used a procedure that was different from what the ISU rules actually specify, and Weir should have won by a hundredth of a point without need for a tie-breaker. But there is a third rounding convention which is mathematically superior to either, and Lysacek would have won on points if that had been used.

Weir was "gracious" in defeat. He said, "I have three U.S. titles, I guess Evan can have his two."

Let's just say, if Shcherbakova was scored correctly for her sloppy technique and skating skills, she would be much closer to Trusova, but Trusova still should be scored less in PCS, because her "programs" are just sad. To be honest, I think all Eteri girls are grossly overscored in one aspect or another and its not fair to the rest of the field.
Kaori was the class of the field in the free skate. Her speed and flow across the ice and in and out of her jumps are absolutely incredible. Her spins and skating skills are divine. This is indeed the hill I am willing to die on.

.
Trusova was indeed screwed over at 2020/2021 Russian Nationals, should have won the SP there and placed 2nd overall. Shcherbakova was still slightly more overscored at these Olympics as well, her GOE's in particular are criminal, but the end result is fine. Or as fine as things can be considering the state of the judging, and "the situation", and how dead figure skating is as a competitive art. Trusova basically gave it away on the Quad Toe step-out, she could have scored at least 5 more points there.

It's a shame that Kamila is the one who happened to get "grandpa jinxed" 🙄, she had the overall best quality of the Russians. Maybe none of that will matter though if an investigation can bring certain details to light (terrible odds of this happening, but can wish), and we will instead have Kaori Sakamoto retroactively named the Olympic Champion. Lol  If olys were in 2007, why not?
I think the ussian olympic champ everyone would have been ok with is Valieva (without doping scandal) or Kostornaya with 3A and better programs.
Shcherbakova and Trusova have just too glaring flaws.

If I'm remembering correctly (and that's a big if) the 1994 women's competition between Nancy Kerrigan and Oksana Biaul ended in a mathematical tie, and it was broken by looking at the artistic score of the last judge. The last judge gave Nancy a 5.8 for presentation, and Oksana a 5.9, and that's where the 1/10th of a point difference came in.

again, if I'm remembering correctly. That was soooo long ago!

Pretty sure you're right about that. I wasn't a big Oksana fan (too frou-frou for my taste) and was REALLY rooting for Nancy....but Oksana skated with some real pizzazz at that event. IIRC, she also threw in an unplanned triple near the end because she knew she had a mistake earlier and needed to make up for it. Gutsy, huh? All in all, the decision makes sense to me in retrospect.

Put my bias aside, I think Wakaba has the best Free Program overall this season. Her Lion King music choice, choreography, 3A, step sequence, costume....everything is perfect (except one fall). Wakaba is better than Kaori IMO. Kaori is queen of GOE, I got it but ....Kaori's LP is boring ......nothing special about it.

Russian Fed or the ISU? Russian Fed based on how they have handled it so far indicates they will send her to Worlds, though in prior Olympics Russia was very careful of the athletes they sent to the Olympics, now the problem was not known about at the time so they sent her to the Olympics unknowingly with this problem, now they do know about it so that may impact if they name her to the team. ISU - based on the CAS ruling, I'm not sure if they can keep her out of Worlds.
