Women's FS - 2022 Olympics: Thoughts?

I have consistently been against raising the age of eligibility for seniors. But having actually witnessed the spectacle on TV this evening, now I am ready to go with 21. Immature teenagers bawling their eyes out and throwing tantrums when things don't go their way -- no, thanks. I've got my granddaughters for that.

So I’ve been kinda flippant in my last few comments, mostly because it hurts to much to get sincere and heartfelt right now and I’m tired of being heartbroken and angry so I definitely feel like I need to put some distance between myself and this event for a while before I can fully process and focus on the good (and there absolutely was good).

It's rare or unheard of for the president of the IOC to make this kind of statement against someone involved in the games. He's as well connected as anyone with information. My guess is the sword of damocles is hanging over Eteri's head.

It was a disappointing event in so very many ways.

This is the saddest FS event I have ever seen, which has been greatly overshadowed by the alleged "Doping Scandal". Viewing all the on-going desperate struggle for/against these young skaters here and elsewhere really broke my heart! I think there are still many questions that need to be answered by this Russian coaching team and their Skating Federation.

i gave in.... CBC was presenting it with Kurt and Kaetlyn as commentators.

I am sorry I have watched it.

It was not good on and off the ice. I only watched the last 5 women.

All I will say is thank you Kaori. Many other people have commented on the other women. I don't need to add in more. Kurt and Kaetlyn were very good in their roles and called it right.

Have you seen Naomi Osaka at US open last year?? She was 23yo at the time and threw tantrums, breaking a racquet and crying while losing to a young teenager?

Yes. I was -- and am -- concerned for her emotional well being and mental health.

For goodness sake, can we leave Trusova alone?

This is a sport, there is only one 1st prize. Trusova is disappointed she didn’t win and she should be allowed to vent. Calling it a tantrum is just a word to make it sound worse than it actually is.

Better to show honest emotions rather than fake happiness.

Some athletes see a silver as a prize worth winning, others see it at the first runner up. Maybe with time, Trusova will appreciate it more, maybe she won’t. It’s up to her.

In this sport, there can only be one gold medalist. So there are going to inevitably be a lot of tears and disappointment. Let those that want to be disappointed, mad, or whatever else get it all out. Destroy the changing room if need be. Haha

I can totally understand what she feels. When you are among the best in the world at what you do, it‘s sometimes hard to accept that someone else is better. You don’t get this far without believing you are the best and having a healthy ego. Nothing wrong with that.

I can totally accept Trusova being upset, but the way she reacted towards her coach and the words she said make me uncomfortable about the environment the 3 skaters have to deal with. In this context, people will talk about it..

I too was against raising the age limit but i'm now in favor of it. Just for the legal reasons. I've seen 25yo athetes throw tantrums. Age isn't necessary a guarantee of maturity.
16yo or even 18yo if necessary. So any skater will be held accountable of what he/she does. There won't be this kind of mess anymore.

When she came back her scores magically increased (especially home). With Plushenko they would have left her off the team IMO. She seemed more happy and mentally strong with him. She was cornered to go back to team Eteri by the corrupt system and that's a fact!

I enjoyed Young You, Yelim Kim and Wakaba Higuchi the most, for me they put together the best narrative and smooth movement and execution through their elements and engaging choreography in the face of massive scoring discrimination. I was also impressed with the smooth speed and flow of Kaori Sakamoto's programs.

well.. imagine... we complain all the time that the system is corrupt on the international scene... so if it is corrupt even internally... that's awful... in the end, i hope she accepts her amazing achievements. A lot of skaters would love to land so many quads and earn a silver medal... she has the power within herself to put this experience (which is bad it seems at the moment) in another light.

I mentioned Laurent Dubreuil in this thread, world champion in 500 m speed skating, never lost the podium this season in 8 races and lost a medal by 0.04 a few days ago... In an interview he said, I woke up happy this morning and I didn't have an olympic medal, i will wake up happy tomorrow, without an olympic medal... well tomorrow, he will wake up happy WITH the silver at 1000m... and that is far from being his specialty event.... perspective is everything

it is VERY OBVIOUS that Kamila took one for all of skating. She did that DELIBERATELY! No, I did not support her when this story broke, but for this young lady, I sure support her NOW. That team of sub-humans surrounding her is not what she needs right now. She needs her family and her friends for a few days. In a case like that, with a fifteen year old Girl, you never know how she might deal with it. She only knows one thing in her mind right now: Her life as she knew it is OVER. From now on her life will NEVER be the same. She needs her loved ones to surround her and prevent any attempts on her part to end her life. The F.B.I. is now going to investigate her entire team, and all involved.

Well Bonaly was way older and still threw a tantrum so it is just not about age. Adults can throw tantrums too. I remember the German Javelin thrower who lost Gold medal in Tokyo because the track in the stadium didn't fit him and he was so pissed he claimed he wants all the stadions to have the same tracks and that he is the best in the world and it was taken away from him. They way he behaved seemed like really poor sport.

I agree about raising the age limit, but 17 is enough for me.

What amazes me is how people cannot differentiate a tantrum from concerning psychological distress that should have been immediately dealt with by a psychologist. Instead Alexandra was left there until 3am to hang in the stadium until Eteri, not being a mental health professional, did what she considered best, yell at her and drag her to the buss so they could finally leave. Some medieval type sh*t, especially how people throw around this tantrum term, so disrespectful.
