Women's FS - 2022 Olympics: Thoughts?

I hope Sasha will not leave skating and instead leave Sambo for somewhere where they are more supportive in helping her develop the areas of her skating that are not quad jumps and jumping passes. I'm sorry and I may get hate for this but to me some of the other aspects of her skating are more on par with what I would expect from someone at the novice level than the senior level. Some of that is likely to come with age anyway but some of it needs real help and isn't just going to come. As some others have said, I think that she is the one most likely to be able to still be competitive in another 4 years so I hope she will use that time well. I personally wish she'd go back to Plushenko but it doesn't have to be him if she felt the fit wasn't right. But I think that he had the right idea about what she has to work on.
the thing with Sasha is that it seems she doesn't really want to improve other areas of her skating. she has clearly said for years now making history is more important than winning medals. she left TT because they wanted her to calm down on the quads. her goal all season was to go for 5 quads at the olympics and that's what she did, but at the cost of everything else in the program. it was literally empty, no choreography, no artistry, no second mark at all. and she was still gifted in that area.

i have great respect for her and her accomplishments, but unfortunately what happened today is the price she is paying. she can't have it both ways.

Maybe if she would go for a 2A in the SP she could have won.

It was an incredibly bizzare competition in some ways as the skating was excellent and so many of them delivered their Olympic moment. But then there was like this hot mess sh$tshow on the side that had nothing to do with what they put out on the ice.

Congratulations to Anna, Sasha and Kaori who all achieved their personal bests imo. I loved all three performances.

Congratulations to Alysa and Young You who had expressive, joyful and clean performances too. They definitely peaked at the right time and should be so proud.

And yet there is this cloud over the event that feels significantly worse and more sinister than if all the ladies had face planted. It's very very very strange. I haven't really made peace with it.

What I'm reading on Twitter is horrifying:

Alexandra Trusova stayed in the stadium and refused to leave with her team. According to these comments by volunteers at the Olympics, she refused food and drink, and was eventually dragged out around 3am by Eteri, who yelled at her. Poor girl 😭😭😭#beijing2022 #FigureSkating

I will play devil's advocate and say (if the above is true), I kinda don't blame Eteri for yelling at her. I mean, Sasha needs to go to her room and rest not stay in the stadium in shock. She needs support from her family and a professional really bad IMO. Unreal. A parent should have been there for her. :(

What we just watched was horrible.
A bunch of bullies broke a 15 years old and we watched it in real time.
Journalists, MOC & ISU (because yeah, presumption of innocence is not a thing, lets punish everybody), internet trolls.

Hope all the bullies burn in hell.

Shame. Shame. Shame.
I don't understand. Since she is a protected person because she's 15 why is her name out there?

The problem is that there isn't really anybody there who could that. Clearly she fell out with her coaching team. The rest of the Russian team is very slimmed down and there are no family members there to support her. The covid restrictions do not help to easily facilitate that too.

I've watched and rewatched "the aftermath" of the competition and the only thing I'll say at this time was seeing the happiness and joy on Kaori's face was how I wish the Olympics could be for every medal winner. And 2 US ladies in the top 10 is wonderful. Both of them skated their hearts out and with little or no errors. Kudos and congratulations.

I feel bad because a silver medal at the Olympics is a big deal, and also landing five quads. She is the winner of the free after all. But she sees it as a defeat and that is because of the toxic winner mentality that is glorified and encouraged. And if you don't have that mentality, you're seen as a loser as many great skaters are seen as by many. Sad.

Thank you to WADA and RUSADA for giving Kamila the chance of this Olympic Moment. Truly they showed how much of a protected person they thought this 15 year old girl was by happily placing her in the dead centre of 100% predictable, unavoidable media chaos (considering that the ROC is already under scrutiny on this specific topic for very good reasons). Special mentions to whoever thought of the threadbare grandpa's glass excuse that was sure to turn this drama into an international laughingstock. Letting her skate was definitely better than the alternative. They've sure created a special memory for her.

“Just because. I wanted to cry, so I cried. I’ve been here for two weeks, alone without my mom, without the dogs, so I am crying.”
This was my first thought when I heard about Sasha's meltdown, she must feel so lonely with her family and dogs with her for support. I know other skaters were in the same situation, bit it's really sad. And then of course thinking of her family at home probably seeing it unfold and not able to comfort her. It makes my eyes sting with tears.

Yes and even worse Team Crystal apparently doesn't let you rest on your laurels, so even if you DO win once you step off that podium you're nothing again.

Maybe that's part of Anna's sadness, that even though she won in her team's eyes - or more to the point Eteri's eyes (I'm sure Sergei D doesn't feel that way) - she's nothing unless she keeps on winning.

And for Kamila it was even worse...Eteri showed herself to the whole world for real. There's no reason, no justification for what she said to Kamila. She's the youngest of all of them and she got no proper support whatsoever. I hope dearly that Kamila's family are at the airport to take her away and help her heal.

And I hope Kamila's Grandpa is there and gives Eteri what for. Imagine! Convincing a kid to blame her grandfather for this! I'd be livid, I'd make Sasha's outburst look like a friendly chat!

Chances are they probably advised against the 3A but she wouldn't listen. Everyone's been telling her since her senior debut not to count solely on the jumps to win and she didn't listen. It's why she originally left Eteri. This time around they gave her exactly what she wanted and it failed. She only has herself to blame for not winning and herself alone. You can judge Eteri for Kamila but not Aleksandra

Happiness and sportsmanship.

after seeing Kaori skip around the ice, jumping with joy, i thought... about how the bronze medal winners have impacted me so much more than the champions since 2010 Joannie (death of her mom) 2014 (Kostner and Mao truly stole the show for me as I was not much interested in a Kim vs Sotnikova fan war) 2018 Kaetlyn seemed much happier than Alina and obviously Zhenya.. I wonder who will be the happy bronze medal winner in 2026...

Sasha was already told by Plushenko that she needed to work on musical interpretation and performance, and that it would be advisable to limit the quads. Sasha didn't listen, and instead went back to Eteri and kept on doing what she had been doing since the JGP. But senior skaters are expected to deliver performance, and Sasha couldn't care less about that. Her eyes were glued steadfastly to the ice throughout the entire FS. None of her jumps, spins or transitions (a Danny G leg lift and a hydroplane move) were timed to the music. As it was, her PCS score were way too high for what she did on the ice; fortunately, they were way below Anna's and Kaori's.

Her PCS scores were not way below Anna's and Kaori's. They were a few points below. Her PCS has been propped up forever and are way too high.

They always say 2nd and 4th are the saddest (so many what if? and if only...) and 1st and 3rd are the happiest.

No, i don’t think they arefriends. What friend would act like Trusova on the podium and throw that fit?
