2025 U S.Nationals Senior Women's Free Skate

I agree with Ben. Alysa won. But for me, it was not only the beautiful skate Alysa had...its was Ambers big score in the free but mostly it was the miscall of the tech panel in the short, proven by NBC rabbit ears tonight as well as on instagram by NBColympics. Amber's 3A should have been downgraded, but the mistake wasnt caught on those dinky screens the panel uses, till NBC showed it. I watch the slow mo stop action 4 times. I would say her skate hit the ice at 190-200 degrees short.

The tech panel let both of them get away with alot, so it would take alot of slow mo replays to accurately score both of them. PCS also grossly inflated for both. Fed prefers Amber because, unlike Liu, she has a chance against the Japanese because of her 3A.

I just finished watching

Big hug to Lindsay!! She is the most brutally attacked athlete by the technical panel

I’m so happy for Sonja!! 9th place finish. I thought she should have finished in 8th place. Under marked in PCS. Lovely 3S 2S that should receive higher scores due to its difficulty and uniqueness. I will always love her.

Amber Glenn came back with so much attack in the free skate. In my opinion, she deserved the gold. However, I do worry about her chances at Worlds. I don’t think she would have surpassed 200 internationally with this skate. But, kudos for that terrific 3A!!

Alysa had a chance to cause an upset. She lost it with her last spin. But, to be honest, the last half looked laboured and sloppy. Still, Alysa is someone who is so consistent. I can see her scoring 190+ at Worlds solidly in the top ten.

Sarah was good. But, nothing remarkable. She is consistent. The problem with Sarah/Alysa is that they could finish in 8th and 10th. Perfect for getting two spots. However, if Amber places 6th and doesn’t skate well, it might not be enough. This is why I think they will take a chance with Isabeau. They need Amber or Isabeau to place in the top 4, and Alysa can do the rest (better than Sarah). That is my thinking. However, I’m rooting for Sarah to get the spot.

Also, for Junior Worlds, I guess it looks like Sophie and Sherry (With Elyce having a slight chance, even though Josephine placed higher).

I very strongly object to this line of thinking.

During the National Championships, the principal job of USFSA should be to provide a level playing field for all participating athletes. Everything else must be secondary to that primary mission. If the competition isn't fair because the federation is manipulating the outcome, then it might as well be a case of doping. That is our (correct) line of thinking about doping cases - an uneven playing field.

Once the competition is over and the results have been fairly decided, only then can USFSA retreat to the smokey back room. Until then, every single athlete should be judged solely on the basis of what is put on the ice at this event.

The fact that it is widely acknowledged that this is not always the case in our sport (not only USNats) is shameful.

I agree with you. Im not happy about it either. I wish this was a more honest sport, too. I was just trying to reflect reality. The inflated scores of both leading women unfortunately indicates our wishes were not followed. And you are also correct that it isn't just the US. I believe Sakamoto just scored 228 in Japan despite not even doing any 3/3 combo in the LP. It would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

Am I the only one who thought Amber skated well tonight, outside of that last jump (which she rotated)? She didn't win undeservedly. Alyssa was wonderful, too. I'm so proud of both of them (and Bradie!). Amber has found some resilience in herself we've been hoping for for a long time. Alyssa has clearly found her joy. Bradie, too. I'm loving these mature, individual, interesting skaters.

Yes, I love them all. They are all so unique. I think unfortunately, (unlike the pairs and dance events up to this point) this wasn't the best competition so it makes some of us too negative. But, honestly, I think this is the best group of women the US has had in a long time. They just didn't have their best competition.

This video after the event especially the part where Alysa is answering/trying to answer a question and Amber is trying not to break out in laughter during the press conference is adorable.

I'm not sure what to say about Amber's scores. They are much more generous to her than other skaters.

A 9.5 and five 9.0's given for skating skills to someone who skates on two feet? It's not a criticism, it's simply an observation. It's mainly two footed skating. When Isabeau comes back she'll be getting 10.0 for skating skills if they are giving 9+ to Glenn.

A 5 and a couple of 4's for a telegraphed 3A with no running edge?

The 3Lo at this point is a 2Lo given she's almost 270 degrees before even leaving the ice.

On the 3-3 combo, the 3T was at least a q. The 3T had 225 degrees prerotation too.

Liu started well in the free skate, got away with no call on the 2A in the sequence (clearly underrotated don't know how they miss this), but just ran out of energy and there wasn't much power left for the combo in the second half, the step sequence, big mistake on the spin. It feels a little like a hastily put together exhibition program as well with the moving the arms and bopping to the music. It seems like maybe she doesn't have much of a dance background, so maybe they need something that plays to her strengths like with the SP.

It's hard to say whether Liu or Glenn deserved it more, but I'd have to give it to Liu. Glenn defintiely got looked after by the judges more.

Sarah probably should feel a little aggrieved she had two solid performances relative to the top two they really hold her back on PCS the huge 7 point difference between Amber and Sarah is not justified. The 71 PCS Amber receives is what Isabeau was getting (probably a touch overscored as well but justifiable for a beautiful skater like Isabeau), whereas a two footed skater doesn't deserve that kind of PCS.

You can see the temptation USFS has giving such a scoring boost to Isabeau every time, because apart from her jumps she's a class above any of these skaters, but those jumps are already not rotated on most jump elements and the jumps will only become much harder now.

The big PCS they give Glenn at these domestic meets feels like the USFS trying to gaslight ISU judges, and in a way it has worked because she started to get a big PCS push internationally as well because she was always a low 60's PCS skater until recently, and I don't think anything has really changed with her skating. Maybe 1 point, maybe 2 points at most higher than before .

She scored a 194 in her only GP. Sarah's highest GP score is 196. So, the numbers don't agree that Sarah is going to outscore Isabeau. But, if Isabeau isn't ready then by all means Sarah should go. She is solid. She just likely won't make the top 8 unless it's a bad competition and she hits. (which I can't hope for)

But Isabeau was struggling to rotate her jumps injury free like at World's (tech panel let her get away with a lot of cheated landings only called one although there were something like 4 or 5 that could have been called in the free skate I'll have to check my notes). Was really struggling to rotate her jumps in that GP this season.

Now she's been out injured for 3 months. She's not going to have any fitness, any form, the jumps will be even worse. Whereas Sarah has some big beautiful jumps and much more consistency. Sarah is a safer bet than Isabeau. Really, Sarah not much worse of a skater than Amber, she's just doesn't get the big boost others receive. Both skate on two feet. This is something I really noticed with the US skaters is the two footed skating, although less with Alysa.

Also, picking Isabeau incentivises skaters who are out of form or not confident to simply withdraw from Nationals and rely on past glories to go to World's. Let's say Isabeau skated at this event despite knowing she's out of form, finished at most 5th which I think would have been realistic, how could you justify selecting her if her form hasn't improved since early in the year?

I missed Levito, her FS in particular, and fingers crossed she recovers. It felt like maybe the rink wasn't the best, because despite the scores, the skaters all looked winded. I am worried about Glenn in particular hosing off the last jumping pass, because if she returns back to starting storng then falling apart in second half, it's just gonna be such a let down. I loved the podium, excited that SE got a bronze medal.

Ok. My opinions only -
Bradie is resilient. She keeps getting knocked down but bounces back up. So much admiration. She has imprived her artistic side so much and knows how to work the points. I wish for her continued success.
Amber has a triple axel. That is what separates her frôm the pack - but does anyone get tired of the anguish? She looks so stressed out before, during and after. It’s hard to enjoy the performance.
In juxtaposition Alyssa is riding the Cinderella comeback story and her energy is contagious. She is the PR we need to grow the sport. Performing counts.
Sarah will benefit from going on tours - her skill set is there but she needs performance enhancement that will come with shows not competitions. It'll get there.
My picks - Amber (by defaut) Alyssa and Isabeau for Worlds. Alyssa, Sarah, Bradie for 4C.

LOL, you meticulously dissect the jump landings of Amber and Alysa, but then make a claim that Sarah’s score is not justified and she should have scored higher, yet you don’t post any screenshots of her jumps. This is an incomplete and biased argument, albeit absolutely ridiculous as well. :ROFLMAO::rolleyes:

No, you’re not. Amber just obviously receives a lot of hate because she is currently undefeated this season. When she wasn’t winning, she received a lot of hate because of her inconsistency. Now that she has improved and she is winning a lot, she is receiving a lot of hate because she is a challenger for World and Olympic gold. The lesson here is, obviously, you can’t please everyone, so don’t even try.

Basically, Alysa Liu lost the Gold medal because of her last element the Layback Spin. But good for her ! To have grab the silver medal for her comeback season. She could shake thing up at worlds. And, we could see Alysa Liu making the podium at worlds :)

These insufferable posts dissecting the angles and degrees of jump takeoffs and landings is a big reason why many are turned off from this sport. You shouldn’t have to use a ruler and protractor or endless screenshots to have an appreciation or criticism of the beauty and difficulty of figure skating.

That’s not to say that I don’t want blatantly cheated landings or takeoffs to be penalized, but to the degree that it is being done in this thread is too excessive. I can understand being this meticulous if we are determining an Olympic Champion, an event that only happens every 4 years, in a very close contest, but it’s every event and in every thread now that people are posting these screenshots over and over. It’s also only being done to select skaters and not all the skaters, so there is a clearly biased agenda that is being presented as well. Stop trying to take away the joy of this sport. It’s figure skating, not geometric skating.

Alysa and Amber are the comedy duo I never knew I needed in my life, but I know now. Alysa was like there were points?; I don’t remember any points. Wait, what was the question? Amber bursts into laughter. Liu is just happy-go-lucky, footloose and carefree, and I absolutely love her for the joy and energy she brings.

Yes, I also heard it recently internationally and was surprised. I can't remember where. And I don't know the reason...

Sweet Caroline = Boston

It is sung at every Boston Red Sox home game.

Sweet Caroline was sung at the 2016 FS World Championships in Boston. The whole crowd sung the song, including with the Red Sox flourishes sung here. (bum bum bum and so good so good). I have is no doubt it will be sung in Boston again, but just how will be interesting.

In 2016, skaters were allowed to pick the song played when they entered the ice for their performance. Ross Minerva from Skating Club of Boston had Sweet Caroline played as a lead in to his program "Boston Strong" about the bombings at the 2013 Patriots' Day / Boston Marathon and aftermath. The usual thing for a Bostonian to do on the Patriots' Day holiday is to go to the Red Sox opening game at Fenway Park and then stroll over the the finish line of the Marathon, so it was actually a planned part of Miner's program.

As to why it was picked up by British soccer, here's a commentary.

But it stays because it works as a crowd- rousing moment. And it should also be remembered that Fenway Group owns the Liverpool Premier League Team.
