{Japan] needs a talented [dance] team that has been training together from a young age if they want a real revolution within their program...

As I remember the discussions over the format and scoring rules in the past, I think that this was a big part of the ISU's motivation for the whole team concept. It would encourage countries that have strong singles skaters to invest in building up their pairs and dance programs.

Sato was AWE-some!

I learned that I know nothing about what PCS is all about. When Sato came up to within a couple of points of the winner on TES I thought it was in the bag for Japan. Evidently there is more to PCSs than esthetics.

The team event was amazing and stressful as all hell to watch. There were some frayed nerves from the skaters - and from me - but many competitors gave career best performances, Kagiyama, Shun, Gogolev, Kam/O’shea, Pereira/Michaud. Others that stick out in my mind are Rizzo, Gilles/Poirer RD and Guignard/Fabbri FD.

I wanted Japan to win the gold, but am very satisfied with how they won the Silver, giving it their absolute all and outperforming the US in my opinion. It went down to the very last seconds!

And finally, I think the Bravo Sierra that the team event is meaningless and that top competitors don’t care about it can be put to rest. The skaters clearly care about it a great deal and, therefore, it has value.

Edit: Rizzo’s performance also sticks out with me! Not sure how I forgot to mention him.

I think years from now when the Team event is just accepted as being important as any other team competition and not meaningless we will look back on this TE as the one that changed peoples minds for good.

Probably because team USA (and rightly so) thought that Ellie and Danny would earn the best placements.

It was a bit of a day at the office skate for Shun - i hope he explores his artistic range and learns to show more emotion (not just in the KNC!) because he’s got the goods elsewhere. He had some stumbles here and there too and gave up levels. He got a PCs personal best though and was technically so impressive but I felt more fire and passion from Malinin but got greater control and refinement from Sato. It is the Olympics so sometimes what energizes the crowd can edge a skater ahead.

I was thoroughly entertained by this TE but it’s still in concept a terrible idea. Yes it pushes top nations to diversify their skating programs but it also is performative for nations who don’t have the means nor the depth of talent nor same interest in skating to develop enough talent across all disciplines - all at one quadrennial at that. And I guess intermittently have countries who have no shot at winning end up playing spoiler to other countries (like the Brits in ID or the Koreans in singles). In a sense the “team” now includes countries who you hope will help create distance between you and your medal-contending rivals. Not exactly in the team spirit.

It is a good way to “warm up” people to the main individual events, so I’ll give it that.

Oh, definitely. Everyone fielding their A line-up made a difference in the quality of the experience for sureee.

They may also have hoped to substitute in men's. If they had a big enough lead, that would have been their choice for the second substitute.

Well, it's technique to begin with. Shun Sato has it and Ilia Malinin hasn't. Except in the step into a jump, look at the difference between a deft step into a jump, at a Skating Skill level into the 7; and the rest of the latter's skate, well under that level.
But it's clearly politics too, and that, Shun Sato hasn't.

Like all in all, congrats to Team USA- Kam O'Shea believed in themselves when no one else did, Chock and Bates actually made me root for them a little, and I hope Amber, Ilia and Alysa can all pull themselves together for the IE. I like when skaters go clean, I like when they deliver their personal best.

At the same time, I hope the entirety of Team Japan and Canada (as well as our great German pairs who unfortunately couldnt compete because no singles qualified) have a fire lit under them.

What happens with the scores in the end is not on the skaters- I just want them to leave the ice with a performance they can be proud of.

The label mr samarach the former ioc president . Isnt he korean now.
Wasn't Mr. Samaranch president around 2010 to around 2018 . He was a great doctor president that people missed.

I the Team Event!

My favorite highlights - Ellie & Danny's free skate, Matteo Rizzo's free skate (and post skate reaction from him & Team Italy), Maddie & Evan - both programs, Kaori - both programs, Yuma's short program, & Shun's free skate, Seeing Boyang skate well always makes me smile!

Congrats to all of the medalists. May all of the skaters be well rested for the individual competitions!

I think the sour taste can be summed up as;

Team Japan skated 8 basically flawless programs, each member of their team gave it their best performances. Yea Kaori had a pop but it wasn’t noticeable to the naked eye.

Team USA did not, there were 4 skates out of 8 that had significant errors, but they still won.

This competition made the need for AI to evaluate skating obvious. The technical panel has too much power.

Congrats to Team USA, Team Japan and Team Italy!

Going into this Team event I thought the final placement would
be just as it turned out what I didn’t expect and what ended up
happening was how close Team Japan would get to that Gold.

As to the judging of the event I believe it was fair.

Other than Maddie and Evan, Ellie and Danny and Matteo, my heart belonged to
Team Japan.

Shout out to all the other skaters who participated in the Team Event and did
their best for their countries, well done!

Woke up this morning still so happy for Ellie and O’Shea, and for Rizzo.

For me, those were the Olympic moments.

Kaori/CB skated brilliantly but that was expected. Ilia was expected to win. But those didn’t feel like Olympic moments to me.

Onwards to the Individual Events. I will miss some of the early skates (sob), which makes me very sad because I like to watch all the skaters and cheer on the ones that will not get to medal, or even make it to the free. I don’t know that peacock will play the early groups.

Side note post awards ceremony - the podium did not have any coverings to protect the skate blades so the top three teams all need to get their skates sharpened as reported by Christine Brennan

I hope that they all can have their skates sharpened in time and just as they wish, I'm afraid that it may prove a true handicap for those whose skate depend more on fine-tuned blade sharpening, and who had had it done just before leaving home for Olympics?
