2025 Canadian Nationals: SR Men's Free Program | Jan 18, 2025

Arguably, my body shook harder during Roman's FS that it normally does while Piper/Paul perform
For some reason, I'm drawn to Roman's "zen" presence and down to earth attitude - and I really want him to do well. In my book he did well, mainly because he did not let that 4S fall spoil rest of his performance. Sure, the whole thing still needs work and cleanups, but...this is one of very few programs this season that can "sit" on my brain for days (the other is definitely Rino Matsuike's FS). It's so quietly intensive, a bit mystical (that passage between 2A sequence and step sequence...just exquisite), with that finale build-up that imho was brilliantly used for spins and choreo sequence.
I cracked up at Roman's coach standing to show off her purse to someone sitting above , but more seriously - congratulations to Roman for standing on business there, for being back, winning and making me emotional :)

Anthony...what's special for me is that he always seems to leave part of his heart in the performance. You can see a program is an experience to him AND to the audience, not a checklist to tick off. And he always goes to the great lengths to embody the music, the story and his own feelings about it. There's space for acknowledgement of technical skills and there's space to feel something from a skater, related to them on personal level, to get moved - and Anthony never fails to move people in some way or another I feel. Kudos to him for pushing himself and not giving up on the performance after that 3A pop. It moved me seeing him so taken by this moment.

I’m 50/50 on it. They told them upfront once Wesley WD.

Although Roman skated fantastic, it was low stakes in that the other “strong” competitors weren’t in attendance.
I kind of think the opposite! I think having a seemingly clear path to the title could seem scarier to him than a full, competitive field—he’s not been the type to do well when it seems like he can’t lose.
But he did beautifully here, and I think has finally laid to rest the ghost of that disappointing Olympics performance.

John Kim will get over his free skate nerves. And when he does, he will be a star. He started out so strong and then after the quad toe his expression changed. But I will remain his fan. Because I know one day…. Congrats to David Li. Hope his future is bright too.
Me too. I'm turning into a John Kim super fan
I transfer my Edrian love to him and Eddy.

My picks

Roman for worlds

Anthony and David bondar for junior worlds. Alternate David li
That's what I would like to see. I think David Bondar has earnt it because he has been consistent all season. David Li was great here but had been poor the rest of the season. I don't know whether David Li being on the senior podium and thus the national team might influence the selectors, though.

I think they'll go with David Bondar since he has been more consistent all season and he has a consistent 3A. That gives him a TES cushion that David Li doesn't have yet.

David Li will get to be on the National Team automatically though thanks to his bronze, plus he should be on NextGen thanks to his results here.

Roman is Canadian national champion? Two-time Canadian national champion? This makes my day :love3::laugh3:

Anthony is very very special.

Does anyone have a link to videos including the KnC?

I have to remind mysef that these men and women are the best in Canada and out doing their best. They want to be better. They want the big tricks and they want the artistry. But executing is no easy feat. Good for Roman in giving two soiid tries O bviousy heneed to work on the 3A and if he doesn't have the tech then skate clean and maximize points. Because he is so inconsistent I doubt they willname him to the world team just because he skated reasonably well here. And great to see Anthony. Such a special skater. Chan, Buttle, Yuzuru are great figure skaters but Paradis is an artist. Too bad he technically is concerning without a quad or 3A. It says a lot he is second and n o one is close. It is nice to see "old" faces like Matthew and Bruce but they seem to have been around for a while and aren't getting better it seems. Of course you hope they enjoy the process. If Wesley is still injured come 4CCCs then I think it is obvious who should go to worlds.

Roman was spectacular here. His posture, his stretch and line — nobody compares. Loved both programs, great choreography. Great expression. I thought the judges were stingy with the scores and could have gone higher. One of the best triple axels I've seen from him. It was so great to see him give two good performances back to back. He just looked really confident.

When Roman fell on his second 4S, and then executed his solo lutz, I yelled out to not forget the three jump combo and to go for an easier combo. He listened to me 🤗:

2A eu 3S 👏 (finally made a smart decision)

Right after, he really got into the music. You can tell, he is beaming with more confidence after this title. He is more than likely going to get the Worlds spot. Wesley and Aleksa are so inconsistent this season and have less than a 50% chance of even making the free skate. I remember seeing Wesley pop all his jumps in the SP at two domestic events. His best performanceis only a 206 internationally this season. So, unless he scores 230+ at 4CC, I’d go with Roman.

With Roman, the odds are getting over 50%, in the SP, and that is what we need. None of our Canadian men are capable of top 12 anyways. We need to aim for top 24. Roman is the last athlete to give us a second spot too, from 2022 Worlds. This skate was his best since that performance. He is heading in the right direction.

4CC - Roman, Aleksa, Wesley alt. Matthew

Jr. worlds - Anthony, David Bondar
That is almost 100% certain. Anthony’s second place finish at Challenge and Nationals shows consistency. David Bondar winning Challenge and Junior Nationals. These two skaters have outscored their peers. I don’t see a case for any other skater getting one of these slots.

Sr. Worlds - TBD (decided after 4CC)

I agree with your picks for world jr. I think David & Anthony both deserve to go. I think Grayson Long could be a possible alternative in my opinion.

but david li has no 3a. so i would give it to bondar for those three reasons 1) national junior champ 2) consistent 3) 3axel

what li has fot him : guts, much more exciting to watch, senior podium.
