Please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't jl baker do Austin Powers as a gala number? I find it strange to expect a competitive Rd to be as fun as a gala number. This being said, I dislike that Rd for lala but I don't think the argument resides in a comparison with a gala number
You are correct that it was for a Gala number, but given what they did with Saturday Night Fever - I have no doubt that Austin Powers would've worked just as well to win over the crowd, but not the judges.

What I can answer to this is that the crowd loved LaLa's performance, or enough of it to give them a standing ovation. Of course, local crowd but they didn't give standing ovations to everyone.
So, perhaps that for skating fans, the reference is Baker's gala program.... but at this point, I find the comparison just a way to dinge skaters on the real problem which is not theirs : the problem is the program itself, not the performance of it. It stars with a lot of flair and believe it or not, LaLa are into it... they can be fun :) but it does fall flat when the music changes. So my humble opinion is that it's really the program/choreo/ choice of other songs that are problematic... and perhaps if Jean-Luc had received that kind of program people would be saying that he is great in the first bit of the program but it dies out in the second half :)

I find that the comparison, though it looks for some like apples to apples is really apples to oranges.

My comment was that I like LaLa - but preferred JLB
I approve of the the standing O that LaLa received, they are excellent skaters who gave a terrific performance.

That is so very much NOT what I meant. I only wanted to present the Austin Powers much discussed JLB gala number for others who may not have seen it from 2018 and to show how H/B created characters in a competitive disco program to music often seen in RD at events everywhere. If you thought I was trying to dinge your skaters, then you are grossly misrepresenting my intentions. I have little desire now to comment on anyone in any event.

I know... sorry... I didn't imply you meant that.. .some others have though I should have explained myself better.
I find that ice dance creates a lot of unnecessary rivalries based on program choices... as some iconic performances have happened and are associated with some skaters... and then it becomes a way to dinge skaters.... I know you were not doing this but it's a recurring pattern in some threads and it is getting old. LaLa had a great Funky Town program so I don't think that's the issue. We have seen them as birds, in a MJ awesome RD, doing a cha cha lesson, and with very beautiful lyrical programs. If there is a team that is versatile among the younger generation, it's them.

Only problem is that your response was directed to me. Moving on to US Nationals...
Luckily I'll get over it since I don't want to waste anymore time on this.😼
