Well, no surprise Belbin/Agosto seem to have a lock on gold, but I am surprised Pechelat/Bourzat, barring major catastrophe, seem to have silver all sewn up. Davis and White can still fight for the bronze, but Faiella/Scalli have a couple points to play with. I find the result unexpected.

Amazing to see the gap between Pechalat/Bourzat and the next team is more then Belbin/Agosto ahead of Pechalat/Bourzat. Who would have ever guessed that before the event. Although I like the French I thought their program today was so simple, footwork so far apart. I cant believe their score, atleast yesterday I thought they did really well.

I enjoyed very much the ODs!! Results apart, I think that the teams showed good originality in the performances!!  This is going to be the season I'll be very interested in watching OD in competitions!!

I liked Davis/White, Faiella/Scali, Pechalat/Bourzat and Belbin/Agosto. I'm talking about the interpretation, performance, because I don't understand very much about the technical aspect of Ice Dance. All were very different one from the other, but it seems that the 4 couples understood the music they have choosed.
Not as last year, when we saw a lot of tangos that were "not" tangos, or two years ago with salsas that were "not" salsas.

I like also the fact that they can carry objects.

Well, their technical OD score is the same as for Faiella & Scali. Also, their skating skills and moves-in-the-field marks were only slightly ahead of the Italians. Where they really rocked was the Performance, Choreography, and Interpretation marks.

no surprise with Tanith and Ben, but I had hoped Davis and White would have moved up some more. thier origanal dance looked good in the YouTube clip. i think tha they are always undermarked.

Well that makes a bit more sense since those were the areas they exceled in most.

Is there really a youtube clip out there of Meryl and Charlie? I would love to have the link to it if there is...Also, I'm so concerned for them getting undermarked and beaten by teams they beat lastyear..., I don't want them to be that lone team who ends up lower in the ranking that the previous year, as often did Bourne and Kraatz...

There is no youtube clip of Davis/White from Skate America up yet. I checked just now and there is nothing of yet.

All of the Dance teams in this competition have one thing in common: costumes by Ringling Brothers.

Is this a compliment or not? Who are the Ringling Brothers?

I liked very much the costumes of Davis/White, Pechalat/Bourzat, Belbin/Agosto and Faiella/Scali. I love folk!!!!!!

Don't forget that Country was also chosen as part of the Original Dance :)

I thought country was part of folk? Country as American folk dance. Right or wrong? Or it is counted as separate?
Excuse my ignorance! Ice Dance is something new to me (two years ago I didn't even watch Ice Dance, but now I enjoy it).

The Ringling Brothers owned a big circus. Not a complement -- the poster is saying the costumes were garish, maybe even clown-like. :)

I think that's right.

However, in the U.S. the term "folk dance" usually refers to European folk dances, I believe.

There is also "Western" (cowboy) dancing, like square dances, which has it's own niche and is still popular as a recreation.

I must concur that there was a high degree of cheese in the OD costumes.

B/A: I don't like it. I thought it was cheesy and cutesy. The first half seemed to simple in choreography and was boring. Not exceptionally good use of the music.

D/W: Lose the yellow scarf Meryl was waving around distractingly the entire program. It detracted from the overall look and seemed to serve no useful purpose at any point.

P/B: This was my favorite of the ODs. Thought she used her dress and fan to good effect. Great highlight lifts.

If the ISU is trying to lure ESPN or NBC or ABC into additional or continued coverage, I hope they don't use footage of the OD in their marketing campaign. I personally don't mind the over-the-top costumes, but to some, they could be off-putting and make it hard to take the competition seriously. Yes I know Dance costumes have always been outrageous and sure, they're supposed to be "folk" costumes ... but, well, sorry ... some of them do look like clown costumes.

Mathman - I know you mean well, but there are native (US) dances. Maybe you don't call them 'folk' but they are very Americana. There is the famous Cakewalk, the Lindy Hop, the Blues, and I am sure a half dozen more. Their
longevity is about as long as the Galop in Europe.
Try googling ballroom dances and see how many you get.
