2025 Canadian Nationals: SR Rhythm Dance | Jan 18, 2025

Eh, I'm not talking entire sections. Empty seats where people are sitting. I don't think what i am seeing on the stream is VIP sections, but who knows
It was sold out on ticket pro. Last night was crazy full. This morning not bad. Right now, people are eating out....and slowly coming back

Btw. For the naysayers....Piper and Paul were fast.
I remember seeing fan cams last year of the top free dances, and Piper and Paul were noticeably faster than the others, save LaLa. So this does not surprise me.

Welll the last short event was the best. Four teams thatt coud be top ten in the world. Piper and Paul still have room to grow. Today's program was in my opinion the best RD performed so far by any team but the judges do like CB.
I wish I thought Piper and Paul had a fair chance at the gold, but with worlds in the U.S., I think the politics are decided in favour of C/B. If they wouldn't give it to Piper and Paul in Canada last year when they absolutely deserved to win, when their FD was so, so much better skated than C/B, who had visible errors, than I have to tell myself not to hope for miracles.

I agree with most that LaLa’s program just doesn’t work and that’s because it lacks cohesion.
The Austin Powers song is a decade previous and more to the other two songs and IMO Zach drops the character.
They needed to either bring in another Frug type song or something from the 60’s and continue to tell the Austin Powers story.
Or they could just scrap the whole thing, which gets my vote. But I don't think they have the time anymore. The disco music is just so drab.

You didn't have a very long eating break. Are there fast food places / food stalls near the arena?

There is everything from relatively fancy to milestones and other chains to fast food. We left as soon as Piper and Paul were done. The issue is getting in and out of the arena.. beating the crowd means quite a lot of time saved here...and then time saved at the restaurant and time saved coming back in. People are back now

Some thoughts on some of the skaters outside the top 2:

Really liked Korneva/MacDonald. They could really develop into something great.

The choreographer for Fournier/Zhu (Haugenauer, I believe they said) really totally wasted the fun that Kung Fu Fighting could have been for the rhythm dance. Disappointing.

What is going on with Bashynska/Beaumont this season? I thought they were skating better than they have, until the disaster on the lift. Her costume is tacky and hideous.

I've never seen Fabbri/Ayer look better. This RD really brings out their best qualities, and I thought this was their best performance of it.

It was also Lauriault/Le Gac's best performance of the season, and they too looked really good here. Their RD is something different as well, which I appreciate. I'm glad I don't have to decide between these two teams. It's rightfully close.

they are very good ... yet, they are of very small stature... they will have to work extra hard to project and have great ice coverage.

he had a leg fracture and since then, they haven't really performed well. their programs are also meh compared to years before.

i adore them.. they are so powerful and engaging. their twizzles were second best (only LaLa beat them on that imho)

i also thought they improved a lot... to the point that it's that close between F/A and them... it will come to the FD of course.. will we see also an improved LaLeG or what we have seen all seasons (big mistakes)

For pairs and dance, I would be okay with sending the 3rd team to worlds and the 4th team to 4cc....
What I don't want to happen is that one of these teams in both pairs and dance see their season over...

Canada has done that in the past when they have 2 nearly-equal teams. Not sure about pairs, though. There is quite a score and skill gap between 3rd and 4th. Bombardier/Mimar should definitely get another international assignment; just not sure it should be 4CC.

I suspect that Deanna & Max will opt to skip 4cc's. Max could use some time to recover from whatever ailment he had. That would mean 2, 3, & 4 places at 4cc's in pairs.

In dance, perhaps Lajoie & Lagha could stay home and rework their RD?

Re: Lajoie/Lagha - my gut tells me they will stick to what they have, with no major changes at this stage. Which frankly disappoints me because I'm not a big fan of this RD for them (and I'm fully aware this is a bit controversial take).
The more I watch this RD (and being fortunate to see it live in Grenoble), I'm coming to conclusion that the concept/theme "wears" them too much (similarly to saying about costume wearing the person instead of person wearing costume) and that it dims their undeniable talent. Plus, with all due respect to Zach, he is not Jean-Luc Baker who for me subjectively set some kind of standard of ID man with that kind of program aesthetic. I just wish they'd scrap the whole thing, but it ain't happening. If they feel good with it, I'm no one to judge - I just feel this can be their vulnerability in the grand scheme of things. At the same time, I'm unsure what other RD music/theme/style eould suit them or maybe make it showcase more their skills and looking more "refined" as a whole...

These nice young people do not seem all that comfortable with this music

OK Kaitlyn W does not agree with me, she liked it
I've seen them be even feistier with this program earlier. They were being polite today.

This RD is just so fantastic - I love the music, the vibe, the choreo, and they looked so sharp with the choreo today. They've changed some of the choreo, they took out the mid-twizzle transition from earlier on in the season... it's probably for the best because it was very risky and really slowed down the second set, but I do miss it. However, a lot of the other additions are brilliant. That entry into the rotational lift is so good!
I like LaLa - but for me the better Austin Powers characterization belonged to Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker.

More training and recovery time would certainly be beneficial (you could see the lack of it here), however, I think they also really need another competition under their belts before worlds.

I don't think they will change it, I just think they should (actually, I think they should have changed it earlier is the season so they'd be refining it by now). They're scoring well enough with it that I'm not sure their team has recognized what a problem it is, and how much it could hold them back this season.

Zach is not goofy enough for Austin Powers. You need a kind of wink, wink, nudge, nudge with the audience to pull it off that Zach does not have. And then the disco music they've chosen is all kinds of blah and dull, plus everyone and their dog is doing disco. Even here, at Canadians, I thought it was choreographically and in theme the weakest of the top four dances. Their skill still puts them in the mix internationally, but this is not the program to wow the judges into putting them on the podium, in my opinion. They needed something that stood out more, like Piper and Paul have.

I still remember a chat I had in Helsinki about RDs and my words about majority of the field doing Disco, while Disco definitely NOT suiting everyone, in sentiment of everybody chose Disco because it was the most obvious choice. It's funny to get reminded of that now.
Yes, I agree about "wink wink nudge nudge" missing there to inject some spark that would overall elevate the vehicle to make their skills not being solely there to keep the score high-ish - depending of music/theme chosen from inside Disco sphere, I think one needs to have that ease about themselves and know how to sell stuff to the audience that would just click apart from executing the program in its core. This overall is what for me makes the team complete in a way, this ability to both execute and own the program enough to make an impact.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't jl baker do Austin Powers as a gala number? I find it strange to expect a competitive Rd to be as fun as a gala number. This being said, I dislike that Rd for lala but I don't think the argument resides in a comparison with a gala number
