2016 Four Continents Ladies Free Skate

I wished I had Japanese TV to listen to Kevin's Japanese. It's a Herculean task to juggle between an elite sport and learning a foreign language to the fluent level, and it's another thing to speak that foreign language in front of a big crowd. Hats off to the guy.

This is the first half of the Japanese broadcast, Kevin's interview is somewhere at the start. 12:45

Can someone explain to me why So Youn's second 2a-3t was UR? It looked clean to me...:scratch2:

Yeah I watched it again and it seems fine. But lately it's been a trend for her. The first 2A-3T is clear but the second almost always gets a UR call. I think the same thing happened in COC.

Also I'm wondering, is it a glitch that you are quoting invisiblespiral's post for the second time, when what he/she said is not related at all? I'm just wondering.

I had Mirai in third in my predictions (and Gracie in 1st :0). I had to laugh at all the people who had Mirai out of the top six--behind Karen Chen, even.

I put Gracie as the winner too!

I didn't but I thought that she would think this competition was an important one for her; something of a next step after Nationals to build on what she accomplished there and go into World's with a confident "take no prisoners" attitude. She needed to see this competition as proof of a new winning attitude by her but unfortunately it was if anything, same old, same old. Not saying she can't make any noise at Worlds but this competition, at best, did nothing for her.

I'm curious. Where are the posts expressing outrage that Satoko won the FS with no triple-triple jump?:scratch2: Did I miss those posts? I wasn't able to read all the comments, too busy watching the event, so maybe I did miss them.

Her highest GOEs were for the two 2A+3T jumps. Can anyone explain to me why repeating the same combination like that is okay?

I admired and even loved her SP, but today her tiny opening combination and pre-rotations, her careful skating and lack of connection -- the triumverate of skater, music and audience, especially after seeing Kaetlyn demonstrate that so thrillingly -- just left me cold. Something is seriously wrong with the judging and the system, when this kind of non-performance wins the gold.

I personally think Red Violin is too sophisticated for most judges to appreciate to be honest... come on.. they much prefer something like Titanic and diCarpio drowning, or Phantoms, Les mis etc... alternatively, try Carmen, Firebirds, Swanlakes.

i feel kinda bad for saying it cause So Youn's Red Violin is beautiful piece but after seeing Giada's at Euros (which was incredible interpretation from her and i think judges liked that program) i am glad she changed back to her old LP, i loved R&J better than Red Violin to begin with and happy she is back to using that program, and she skated very good, i think after nationals she found a fire and started to fight, hopefully we will see even better performances at worlds! :luv17:

Protocals up. What is great is Marai got an edge call on the Lutz but no other deductions. Looks liked she's turned a corner on the rotation issue. Maybe she'll get 2 GP assignments next year.

"turned a corner" is exactly what her opening triple-triple combo did. Apparently the tech panel were looking down or something.

Why laugh at them? Most people seem to make their predictions based on how well the skaters have performed over the season, don't they? Mirai pulled off a Denis Ten, peaking at 4CC after a dismal season. Although she wasn't mistake-free. She's a classic example of what people around here are always saying -- that certain skaters have to depend on others to make mistakes in order to be on the podium.

It was quite clear to me that she was tracing a rapid curve on her way out... the blade angle is hard tell from the video, but with that kind of leg movement I'm not surprised that she got UR. Hope she fixes it by the World, I love her 2A+3T.

But there was also a curve out of Mirai's 3F-3T....

Oh well, I hope she fixes the issue by Worlds!

For the first time in a long time she will definitely get 2 GP spots next year. She is currently 12 on the Season's best list; if a few people have the skate of their lives at Worlds they might beat that but I don't think there is any conceivable way, this late in the season, that she will drop lower than 15. While technically that only guarantees her one spot, with 72 available ladies spots, and with spots after the 'guaranteed' spots are filled going to skaters based on who is highest on the season's best list, it is practically impossible that she would only get 1, and in fact it would have to literally involve a conspiracy against her which I just don't believe could happen.

Mirai was is in very good physical shape the whole season. Her programms this season are way better than what she had before (except her olympic programms). She has improved a lot on her underrotation issures. She didn't just pull off a Denis Ten. It was predictable, that she most probably would skate well, though of course it's hard to predict the exact placement.

Mirai was 4th at US Nationals, well ahead of late entry Karen Chen. She was 5th at NHK and first at a B competition. There was just about no way she was finishing out of the top six here.

A solo jump cannot be done twice. Since her 2A+3T is a combination, it does not violate the rule so it is ok.

You're right about my comparison with Ten. But I still say there's something odd about laughing at people because they make their predictions in a different way.

Your words are a bit too harsh...

As for your question, Kana was very off today. She most likely had a couple of URs. And she also popped a jump which could be more costly than a fall.

Ok, thanks for explanation re Kana who usually does have a tendency to fall in the standings after the fp. Kana has had some lovely short programs over the years, but some of her weaknesses often show up in the longer fp.

Rika is usually a consistent skater and she tries hard -- she's a pretty good jumper but still not very remarkable. Her PCS scores were too high. Otherwise, I really have no argument with the overall placements. Gracie didn't have a good competition and so she deserves to be off the podium.

This was a much better competition that last year's. Scores were much higher (9 people scored over 170 compared to 5 people last year) and the victory of the gold was by about 22 points! :jaw:

1. Satoko Miyahara: Again the score is way too high. TES was exactly 2 points higher than GPF. PCS was fine, but adding up to the total score of 142+ and therefore 214+ is too much...:noshake: However, once a fan - always a fan, I did enjoy Satoko a lot in this competition. Her Un Sospiro FS is still my favourite of this season and it's nice to see some changes in the choreography! I will cheer for her at Worlds! P.S. her english is adorable!
2. Mirai Nagasu: I am so proud of her! Unlike 2014 4CC with a similar situation, she skated very well here and won the silver! Mirai has been through a lot in her life and it's great to see that she is finally back on track and able to compete in that elite level. No Worlds for her (as of yet at least) but this is probably her best competition to date. Also congrats for finally receiving a new PB for the first time in 5 years!
3. Rika Hongo: That fall looked brutal and I gasped so loudly that I almost woke everyone else in the house up. But kudos to her for fighting to the end and overall showing a solid performance. This is a nice redemption for her after the disappointment at COR and Nationals. I'd love to see her have that Riverdance FS to perfection at Worlds!
4. So Youn Park: YES! YEESSSS! I'm so happy that she had such a great showing here. This was her best competition since Worlds 2014 and she got PBs for the SP and the overall. Shame that if she had been clean she would've been on the podium but she's definitley on the right track. I hope that she performs well at Worlds too!
5. Gracie Gold: Good job for pulling off that FS, but I'm still disappointed. Guess that wish of Worlds 2015 deja vu moment did not work. I hope Worlds this year will be better for her.
6. Kaetlyn Osmond: I still couldn't watch her SP, but seeing what everyone else said, it seems like today was a big redemtion for her. I love this FS (one of my favourites of this season) so seeing a clean performance of it was nice. Her PCS were lower than they should've been but that shows that Kaetlyn is a great performer. Too bad she won't go to Worlds though...
7. Kanako Murakami: After such a powerful SP, it was devastating that she had a near-meltdown for the FS. This was not a good way to finish off the season, but she's not thinking about retirement anytime yet :yay: so I'm really excited to see her again next season!
8. Da Bin Choi: This is the first MAJOR international competition (so not Warsaw Cup) and she did very well here. She showed her usual consistency and was one of the very few ladies to have two solid performances. If she skates well at Worlds then top 12 is extremely likely (if not guaranteed)!
9. Na Hyun Kim: Like Da Bin she did very well for her first outing at a major international competition! Props to her for doing the second most difficut 3-3 of the senior ladies field this season. Na Hyun is a strong skater and I can't wait for her full senior debut! :cheer:
10. Zijun Li: Her mistakes were very big and costly, but she still has that lovely presence on the ice, and this program is fine too. I hope she works on her stamina for Worlds, because when she is clean, she's very good.
11. Alaine Chartrand & 12. Karen Chen
Sad for both of them. Alaine has a chance to redeem herself at Worlds, but not Karen. I wish the best for both in the future.
